Tiger Fan History of Sports Replay feedback requested
For anyone following my dynasty I have a question.
Should I use fictional players with Eastside Hockey Manager to play out the NHL or should there be far less detail but some historical accuracy by just replaying the playoffs using WhatifSports.com? I just can't decide which I would rather see so I am throwing it open to the readers for feedback. I would love to see it be historically accurate but I have run some test games with WhatifSports and I am getting some awful results - such as scores of 15-20 goals for each team when I try and play a Montreal-Toronto 1917 playoff game. I could use a game like Pair-a-dice Hockey but I don't think I can keep up with all of the work required in rating the teams myself. Also playing out the games is much more time consuming with Pair-a-dice. There is really no way to safely edit the EHM game file once I get a career started so if I go that route it will be completely fictional players (although the teams will be moderately accurate - at least as accurate as a 30 team NHL can be in the 1950's for example.) I figure college football and college hoops as well as the NBA and NFL will be dominated by fictional players (although in those games I can edit in real-life stars) so does it make any difference if I do the same with hockey? Feedback and other suggestions are welcome. Ideally I would love to see someone point me to a hockey game made by someone like Markus, Gary Gorski or Arlie Rahn that allows me to edit things the way I like. As much as I love Eastside Hockey Manager I just wish it could be customized or at least have the player names and ratings editable. Oh well, maybe someday.

I would say go with EHM. Your MO has been to use the actual text-based sims that are available to you when covering sports and I think to preserve the spirit of that, even if it means fictional characters, that you should go with EHM.
Furthermore, I find the WhatIf results troubling. Having fictional players just means that the ones who eventually shook out to be topflight guys in your alternate universe weren't the ones in real life. With the results you've been getting, you'd have a lot harder time justifying it and still being able to stay even somewhat accurate in terms of history.

With as much realism as you have in your dynasty, I feel that fictional players would be more realistic than playoff games ending with a score of 12-10. Granted, no real players, no connection to our all-time favorites, but better to have a Bobby Orr like player or Wayne Gretzky like player than Orr scoring 8 in a Game 7.

thanks for the feedback. The vote sits 10-10 right now so it does not make my decision any easier.
