Avoiding turnover in online leagues

hey all. dont kow if this should be in this section or the online leagues, but here goes

how do you commishes out there avoid the dreaded rep of being a recycle league? aka having posts up every week in the online league forum looking for new owners? i'm debating throwing my hat in the ring but woudl like to avoid doing the constant hunt for quality GM's

The less teams you have, the easier it is to keep the league full.

Fewer teams and being pickier about your owners will help.

hmm...that's intresting. you'd think that folks would welcome a list of owners that are known to be high quality and those that are....well....choad.

guess its' too easy to label someone choad I suppose

I think the concern about the blacklist deals with generating any bad word of mouth that relates to the game.

As far as keeping owners interested, I've found that long-time friends are the best owners. They already have ready-made relationships with the others in the league and all that comes with it; competition, trust, and the obligatory attempts to stab in the proverbial back with rip-off trades. With a smile, of course.

I'd suggest fashioning a league around such a collection of interested friends, and set up some sort of "auto-pilot" arrangement if they need to temporarily drop out.

You also need to do things that will keep it interesting. The best leagues come to life for the owners, and I don't mean by facepacks. Make online baseball stories, throw in humor (and inside jokes), allow owners to create their own logos, etc.. No matter what you do, keep trying new things and either change or throw out what doesn't work for your friends.

I think screening is over rated.

In my experience, some of the best, long term and most active GMs are GMs where your league was their first OOTP online experience and you gave them a shot. Some of my quickest and strangest drop outs were guys who came in with a resume.

I've had a few newbs who turned to be a waste of time, but quite a few less compared to the supposed online vets that have come and gone.

Give the newbs a chance and they might become the best GMs in your league.

I can't really answer your direct question, but there are various threads in the online forum that ask what you like best in a league and things like that. Might be hard to find the exact search string to turn them up though.

This is beginning to sound more like an attempt to gain sympathy and trick others into joining your [possible] new league!

Feel free to cut and paste;

DWM looking for drop-dead gorgeous women interested in playing online baseball until the wee hours of the night, taking moonlit walks to the pitchers mound, and doing all my laundry. Contact me at (your number here).

Now if that doesn't work, I don't know what will

I guess it is up to personal preference.

Some commissioners would rather have newbies than veterans. Some commissioners would rather have veterans than newbies

To re-literate some of the previous posts, I would try to screen owners just by reading his posts, and if possible, google the potential owner's e-mail address or AIM screen name. Check the user's "application" for spelling and grammar mistakes. That may give you an idea of what kind of owner you would be dealing with.

I'm a big fan of long "applications". If the person is willing to type out a nice, long e-mail explaining to you why the person would be a great owner, chances are, that he will spend lots of time on your league, which is a major plus.

I'd suggest that you read over the many league ads that afloat on this message boards. Take some ideas from those leagues, and then think about what would be best for your league in order to attract the best owners possible.

Starting off with quality owners is the key. Do NOT get your owners by posting in the Online League section of the OOTP boards unless you want a bunch of high school and college kiddies. Best way to recruit your owners is to ask people who you already are in online leagues with who you know are good owners. Also do not let people in your league who do not even own the game. Those owners will quit at the drop of a hat. Also stay away from current roster leagues because those seem to attract alot of the young kids and always fail.

If you start off with a good group then you will usually have a pretty easy time keeping the league full. You might still have to pick up a new owner from time to time but it won't be every week.

There should be an emoticon with one eyebrow raised disapprovingly.

EDIT: I agree with your advice, just not the bolded statement.

Those comments were worthless. I've noticed that new, up to date rosters work the best. I have been in several leagues like this and only one stopped (because of site complication). I've seen draft leagues and historical leagues and most of them never get past the 1st season. I do agree that it is best to have a league with people that know each other. And if a person dosen't own the game OOTP6, you are being very stereotypical to say they will quit that quickly, because few will.
