Sixers Fire O'Brien and Hire Cheeks

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2066717

As a Sixers fan, I like it. Mo is a really good coach and had a great relationship with AI when he was an assistant there. I actually think Iverson got along well with O'Brien but most of the other members of the team didn't and they need a coach who can instill some sort of defensive mentality into this group and I think Mo can do that.

Why was Cheeks fired by the Trail Blazers, I thought he was supposed to be really good?

They had a bad year this year, basically that team was made up of a bunch of thugs and sooner or later was going to collapse, well it finally happened this year and Cheeks was the one who suffered for it. Ironically, the Sixers wanted to talk to Cheeks before the season about becoming the head coach but Portland wouldn't allow it. It just shows how crazy NBA GM's are, they hire and fire coaches like no other league.

Yes, that's one thing which surprises me so much about Cheeks' dismissal.

I think this means the Sixers are now paying salary to 4 head coaches.

You would be correct, part of that has to do with Billy King being a horrible GM. The other part of that is the fact that each time the job has come open since Brown left, the Sixers wanted Cheeks but couldn't talk to him. Hopefully this will be their last coaching change for a while but the way the NBA works who knows.

On the other hand, the Blazers did absolutely fall apart this year. Even taking into account the losses of Bonzi Wells and Rasheed Wallace, that's a team that has too much talent to lose 50 games. Hopefully, Philly will be a better situation, because as much as I like Mo Cheeks, he certainly has not impressed me as a coach the last couple seasons.

In any case, I am happy that that's one less team vying for Nate McMillan.

If O'brien was black and Cheeks was white everybody would be calling this a racist move and somebody would be buried for it...but since its a white guy losing his job to a black guy its cool...thats what I don't get..when Tyrone Wheelingham got fired from ND and wasen't able to finish his contract it was racist and all i heard was it's because he's black but O'brien gets 1 year out of a 4 year deal and noone says anything about racism...talk about a double standard.

Billy King isn't great, but the sixers have been a much better team since he arrived.

I'm getting sick of the coaching merry-go-round. Hopefully it will end now that we have the man who was supposed to replace Brown to begin with.

That franchise had been falling apart years ago which is why they brought in Cheeks who did a nice job with them for a few years before last years debocle. That team has a bunch of thugs and idiots on it so I don't see how any coach could have done much better, and yes they should have lost 50 games after losing their 2 best players and playing in the West.
