Deleting a Retired Player

Some time ago I discovered that one of the prospects in my league had been taken over by Jim Edmonds under the alias of Paris Rose. He had completely replaced my prospect and he brought his entire career statistics along with him. I didn't do anything about it at the time, figuring I'd take care of it later.

Well, he up and retired this offseason. The league is only seven years old, so even with him retiring at the age of 34, he is #1 on the career hits list.

Is there any way to delete or edit a retired player? You can't seem to do it from the retired players screen in OOTP and Pierre's Career Editor only works on active players (it seems).

First, BACKUP YOUR LEAGUE. Then either leave OOTP or open a different league.

Then rename the players.dat to xplayers.dat (or something else) and rename retired.dat to players.dat. Open the league. Reset and release all. All the retired players should be in the FA pool. Edit what you want to and save. Leave. Rename players.dat back to retired.dat.

Get everything back from your backup except retired.dat.

It's been a long time since I did this, but I think this works. If you try it and it does (or doesn't) post here and let me (and others) know.

Anything I try to do crashes the game. I hit reset->release all and that froze it, as did trying to view free agents.

Thanks for the help though; any other ideas?

Well, that used to work at some point or other.

Maybe you have to release the players before you replace the players.dat file. Not sure. Or maybe this is something that has changed. I don't think I've done it since OOTP5.

I can't do anything, though. I tried just going to the free agents screen and it crashes the game.

Even if you reset and release all before replacing the players.dat file?

Hmmm... it's been so long since I've done this, I just don't remember. Maybe if you try releasing all now.

All I remember is that, somehow, you can get the retired players to show up in the FA pool. Did you try going to "Edit Free Agents" in the league setup screen?

Yeah, the rosters are completely blank.

Just to review, I backup the league, reset and release all, rename Players to playersx and retired to Players and in theory the retired players should be in the free agent pool?

In theory. Darn, I forgot to test this at home. I'll have to try to remember again today. There must be a step I'm leaving out or something. That, or, as I mentioned, maybe it doesn't work in OOTP6.

Maybe you have to release all again at the end.

Oh, another possibility that might work is if you use Pierre's player editor and just blank the guy out, basically. I don't know if he'll show up in that either, though.

If you backed up your league at the end of the previous season (I always do this), you can restore that, fix him, then re-retire.
