BABIP and League Batting Average
I'm having a problem getting my league batting average settings right for my solo league. Every season I've been adjusting the league totals in order to lower the league batting average. I do this by adjusting hits upward slightly and then hitting "recalculate" on the league batting average. I thought that adjusting league totals upward was supposed to have a downward effect on players' stats, but the opposite seems to be happening. Each year I adjust the #s, the league batting average creeps up. Last year I adjusted the league BABIP up to .320 or so and the league batting average came in around .290. League ERAs are pretty miserable.
So I'm wondering if adjusting BABIP upward increases, rather than decreases the league hit totals. Instead of having the engine calculate BABIP automatically, should I just try setting it at .295 or something to reduce the overal league BA? |

Adjusting totals upwards lowers stats in every area EXCEPT batting average.
Raising hit totals increases BABIP. Remember to also adjusts triples and doubles otherwise your just going to create more singles. |

All league totals except for BABIP have a negative correlation to their effect on the game. Which means, as mentioned above, if you increase one of these than the effect in the game will be the opposite.
BABIP has a positive correlation. This means if you increase it in league totals, then it will have the same effect in the game.

I always leave BABIP alone (at .297 or whatever the default value is). To decrease the number of hits, just increase the number in the Hits line in the game engine, as others have said. Don't hit recalculate or anything like that.

thanks. I'll try typing in .297 and try that for a year.

Yeah, I discovered it the hard way. I was trying to use my Era Calculator to get the correct results, but everytime I'd change all the numbers like the calculator told me to, I'd hit recalculate and my replay would be further off than before. It just kept getting further and further away. Once I tried it without hitting the recalculate button, the calculator was able to zero in on the right settings. Then for a while, I'd recalculate at the beginning of the season but not recalculate if I restored and replayed the season with the new suggested settings. I've since found that it's better to just set the BABIP at some number and just leave it there every season.
