closer throws 119 pitches
i did a double take when i saw this line in the boxscore:
*the important thing to know here is that spencer is the team's closer... s. spencer 5 IP, 14 H, 11 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HR in a 20-1 drubbing (his team lost obviously). for a second, this reminded of why i dont delve too deep into the boxscore of AI sim games. on closer inspection, there were some acceptable reasons. first, the bullpen pitched a lot in the preceeding 4 games (i just started the season, at game 6 right now). there was a 13 inning game, and 2 games where the starter didnt last 5 innings. so that left only the closer rested fr this particular game. what i dont get is why the AI has only 9 pitchers on the staff (5 starters, 3 middle rel, 1 closer)? they have AAA veterans and 2 outstanding prospects in AAA that are a hair off from being good in the majors, but wouldnt embarrass themselves if called up. theres no pitchers on the d/l either. another interesting thing was the team's transactions. after the 2nd game, the AI demoted their 10th pitcher, a 2 star 27yo. in his place, they called up a 1 star 31yo centerfielder making it their SEVENTH outfielder (only one of whom played a non OF position). the only logic behind this i can see is that the day before one of their CF'ers strained his hamstring and is out for 4 weeks. he's a 2 star 23yo, fairly average. btw, the team already had 2 other players rated at CF. so, suffice it to say its a pretty weak example of AI management. i dont think this rather poor example is too common, but i dont wanna poke around too much and get disappointed; i'll just write it off as a rookie GM mistake ![]() v' |

You can set pitch counts for relievers. Except during playoffs/critical games they tend to be a good idea.

We had a nice discussion about that in another thread recently. You might see if you can find it.
