Historical Replay Project

I'm considering putting together single-download packages for people who want to replay individual seasons. Not career mode, just a single historical season replay. Here's what it would entail.

1. I would start with the 1901 season.
2. I would include all available player photos for 1901.
3. I would use the Lahman database to get actual stats for that particular year.
4. I would edit Catcher's passed balls, and also fielding averages to whatever they were for that year.
5. Ballpark photos would be added. When not available, I would use a ballpark photo that might resemble the ballpark or area. I know there's a historical ballpark kit, but I'm not really crazy about it's setup. I like to see players on the field in their actual positions.
6. The actual schedule for that year would be imported in.
7. Players who played on different teams in the same year, I'd probably put them in either the team they started with or the team they played the most games with. I'm open to suggestions on this one.
8. Players who didn't play enough games to get good stats, not sure exactly how I'd handle this yet. Maybe look at the next year that they played a full season, or look at their career average, on a case by case basis.
9. Historical Logos would be added.
10. The record books would be edited to show actual records up to that particular year. For example, the 1901 season would have records from 1871-1900.

Anyway, I'd like to know if anyone would be interested in this, and look for feedback on things I could improve on or add to the list. After the 1901 season, I would move on to 1902, etc, etc.....

All I can say is 'good luck'. This looks to be quite a daunting project.

I already have 1901 done...with 1871-1900 records.

I sent it to Joe in OOTPdownloads

I also have alot of photos from 1901-1916 thus far

We have a Mod forum started by Le Grande Orange with historic schedules (1901 schedule is in my 1901 file)

#7 I went with the latter

#9 I have jdew's and other logos from 1901 to present

See there, doesn't seem such a daunting task now

This would be an awesome addition to the game (IMHO).

If you need...

I have batting & pitching records for all teams (and therefore the league records) from 1901 to present. (I excluded the NL 19th century records.)

I have a list of knuckleball pitchers. I've checked it vs Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers and Neyer's updates on his website.

For #7, I'd suggest placing the player with the team he started the season with.

Carlton, for the 1901 season you created, what database did you use? I want to use Lahman's so that it uses the actual stats for the individual season, but I can't for the life of me get it to work without the game crashing. The problem is this: For both the 1901 and 1902 seasons, when using either Lahman 5.1 or 5.2, OOTP6 crashes in the following scenario:

1. After you start simming, and a save is done. (doesn't crash here, go to #2, then the crash happens.)
2. After you exit the game, and then try to open the game again.

There is a work-around for this problem. You can remove your league file from the OOTP6 directory, open another league file upon startup, then put the 1901 file back into the OOTP6 directory, and use the Open Season feature from the dropdown menu. But, who wants to have to do that every time?
Like I said, this only appears to occur for the 1901 and 1902 seasons, using Lahman's database. If anyone can figure out what is causing this problem, it would certainly be appreciated! I posted this in the bugs forum a couple months ago, but nobody responded to it. This is holding up my project. I wasted the whole day trying to get it to work. I'm about ready to either give up on 1901 and 1902, or else just go with Ankit's for those years.

OK, looks like I'll be starting with the 1903 season. I'll keep everyone informed of the progress via this thread. Like others have said, alot of the work has already been done for me, it's just a matter of putting everything together. The most time consuming part will be editing the fielding averages and passed balls.

I like the idea but there's no way in hell I would try such a project. Also, I'd say in regards to trades that you should place players on the team they started the season with. Your project though.

After a quick reassessment (didn't take very long), I'll put players on the teams they started with. What I'd like to do is also include a text file that has the dates that trades, retirements, deaths, injuries, etc, occured during a season, so that people have the option of making those events happen in the sim if they so desire.

Good luck with this. You're going to need a lot of patience and perserverance.

Thanks. I'm going to go slow and steady. I'll finish 1 season, take a break, then continue. Even if, (heaven forbid), I burn out and don't finish all the seasons, perhaps it will inspire someone to pick up where I leave off.

Of course you could try to get some people to help out with peripheral stuff like the photos, ballparks and logos for every season. Gives you more time to work the stats and ratings while ensuring they are consistent across the board by just having you work on them but still receiving help in other, less important areas.

I've actually made a huge amount of progress on the 1903 season. Here's where it stands:

1. 1903 Player Photos- Done, with exception of about 40 that I don't have which I'm hoping Carlton will send to me.
2. Fielding Averages and Passed Balls- I'm done up to the letter "M".
3. Ballpark Photos- Not Done.
4. 1903 Schedule- Not Imported Yet.
5. 1903 Transactions text file - Done.
6. Historical Logos - Done.
7. Record Books added - Not Done.

None of the above items will take very long, with the exception of item #2, which is halfway completed. So, progress is going very well.

OK, here's the latest status report on the 1903 season:

1. 1903 Player Photos- Done, with exception of about 40 that I don't have which I'm still waiting to hear from Carlton for help.
2. Fielding Averages and Passed Balls- Done.
3. Ballpark Photos- Done.
4. 1903 Schedule- Imported.
5. 1903 Transactions text file - Done.
6. Historical Logos - Done.
7. Record Books added - Not Done.
8 ***New Item*** Speed, Steal and Running Instinct. - Recalculated for all players, just need to punch in the new numbers.

I'm going to run some test sims once I finish entering the new numbers before I release this project.
