"Biggest Yankee Acquisition of All Time"

Jayson Stark never ceases to amaze me with his gift for rampant hyperbole.

I was just browsing ESPN, and I came across this article where he describes Randy Johnson as 'the biggest Yankee acquisition of all time'.

I guess he's never heard of George Herman?
Oy. freaking.vey.

Wasn't Jayson Stark the second Robin, the one who got blowed up or something?

Yeah, you gotta put the Babe first. I'd place A-Rod second.

I wouldn't place A-Rod second until he helps them get another ring. Babe 1st and Reggie Jackson 2nd. He was a great free agent signing in 76 and in 77 they won the WS I believe.

Heh. His girth would even top the Babe at his girthiest.

"Remember, these Yankees passed on Carlos Beltran because they thought what the Unit brings them was, and is, more important"

They passed on Beltran because of $$$$. Signing him would have made them pay too much taxes to other teams. There is even a limit for the Damn Yankees.

77 and 78. But A-Rod already has more 100 RBI seasons than Jackson!

Reggie was picked up for the '77 season, and the Yanks won two World Series after picking him up. Thurman Munson died in '79.

Now, Reggie and Thurman never liked each other, but that talented squad only won championships with the two of them together. Maybe team chemistry is a bit overrated.

Oh, and regarding biggest Yankee acquisitions, no way you can top Ken Phelps.

NO
WAY
.

Like almost everybody who writes for ESPN, Stark is pretty gawd-awful, but I think he is clearly referencing Johnson's height in this piece, not his place in the pantheon of Yankee acquisitions (or the girth of former Yankee pick-ups).

For the record, I think Ruth, Reggie, and A-Rod all trump the Big Unit at this point. If Randy were younger, then I might be inclined to re-think that list. I think Johnson's arrival is more like Catfish Hunter's...but we'll know in a season or two.

I thought RBIs were over-rated these days?

And... But Jackson has more rings than A-Rod!

Now if it had been Ken Rosenthal writing, it wouldn't have surprised me if he'd said that the biggest acquisition in Yankee history was Doug Glanville.

They are, as are rings.

A-Rod's hit .330-.395-.583 in the postseason. Jackson hit .278-.358-.527

When he joined, Giambi was the biggest Yankee acquisition--but since he's off the juice he's shrunk back to just a run of the mill Yankee acquisition.
