My Tiny College to Play on ESPN
http://www.grinnell.edu/athletics/espn/
http://www.grinnell.edu It should be an exciting time on campus. Had I known I would have been on TV, I would have played for them this year...as shallow as that is. I've had a good time playing pickup ball with most of these guys. I invite you all to tune in on February 3 and check out their unique style of play. Expect to see them score 120+ in this one. [story] Grinnell College's widely popular men's basketball team will face Beloit College (Wis.) in one of the first regular-season NCAA Division III games to be televised nationally by ESPN's family of networks. ESPN2 will televise live from Grinnell's brand-new Darby Gymnasium when the Pioneers (4-4, 1-0 MWC) and Buccaneers (2-5, 0-2 MWC) hit the hardwood on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in a Midwest Conference contest at 8 p.m. CST. "I'm excited to know that our style of play will be seen by the millions of basketball fans who have never seen us play before," Head Coach David Arseneault said. "I think it's great for the two schools involved and great for the game of basketball." For the past 11 years, Arseneault's teams have led all playing levels in scoring and three-point shooting en route to three Midwest Conference titles and one NCAA Tournament appearance. His full-court pressing, up-tempo system utilizes upwards of 16 players on any given night and is responsible for the program's gaudy offensive numbers. Last season's squad scored an NCAA-record 126.2 ppg, with this year's team not far-behind that record-setting pace with an average of 120.5 ppg to date. "Our men's team has an excellent and exciting system that uses a large number of players and that is what Division III athletics should aim for," Grinnell College president Russell Osgood said. "Appearing on ESPN2 will also provide us with a wonderful opportunity to showcase our new facility to the rest of the country, our trustees, and other donors who made it possible." "Grinnell College's unique offensive style of play will make for an interesting and compelling telecast," said Burke Magnus, vice president and general manager, ESPNU. "We are consistently looking for opportunities to showcase all forms of college basketball and look forward to featuring this high-scoring team to our national audience." Sounds like an exciting style of play

Don't really know much about basketball but I do like to see unorthodox strategies succeed.

Cool. I read that story too. I knew a while back somebody else who went there. At least I think it was there, as many of those midwest & northeast small college names blend together in my mind.
I'll probably check that game out.I like fast-paced basketball, but I think that is a bit too fast-paced for me though. |

Sounds like it would be tough for any of these players to make it to the NBA after playing such styles in college, yet it still sounds like tons of fun.
My style is, shoot the three, and shrug it off if you miss. And, that was explained in the ESPN article as what Grinnell does. Should be a very fun game to watch. I'll be tuning in.

It is cool that your school will be on ESPN, though! Dress with a big shirt with the letters OOTP on it and we'll look for you.

Cool. A couple of friends that work across the street went to Grinnell. I'll have to give them the heads up in case they don't already know.

They're playing D3, they're just doing it for fun/love of the game and maybe some scholarship money. |

So Paul Westhead is coaching basketball at Grinnell, eh? Good for him.

Don't forget about this game...be sure to look for me in the stands. I'll be "wearing" one of these, along with a few dozen fellow students.

The only defense that is really taught is full-court press and perimeter D. Coach A figures that if teams get the ball inside the three point arc, you're best just giving them some token pressure on the shot and keeping the tempo moving. The logic is that if you can force 25 turnovers and shoot 35% from 3-point range, you can afford to have the other team making 65% of their two point shots. |

It's an interesting practice, and I'd like to see some sort of it implemented in DI. Only because DIII is such a small sample size (I also attend a small DIII college in the northeast) and the talent levels are so widespread it's difficult to tell if it could work with more talented players.

Redlands, a Div. III school in California, is averaging 138.7 points per game this season.
