Cuss - San Jose Sunrays...

Unfortunately I couldn't finish my entry in time to submit for week #3, but I thought I would finish it now anyways just for kicks. So here it is. I went with a different route than the obvious sun idea. Instead I thought about what other teams in professional sports are based in San Jose, and the first to come to mind is the San Jose Sharks of the NHL. And the name Sun-Rays also relate to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Therefore I did a cross of the two and came up with this burning, shiny, torched concept of a ray shark. Note the hidden "S" in the ray. Hope you guys will like it.

ps. I attached the logo in BMP so that if jnshmoo, LL and EC see this and think it's good enough, can include it into the compilation.

Very nice! Worthy of any contest or compilation! The effects in the team name are dazzling.
However, for the first time in this contest, I wouldn't have voted for you

First, I just want to say I'm glad you didn't finish it in time, because otherwise I'd never have had a shot at a gold medal finish in the contest.

As to the logo, excellent stuff. I'm not sure I would've picked up that the creature was supposed to be a ray shark if you hadn't mentioned it. Not that it's a bad image or anything like that, it's just that to me it was pretty stylized and so I would've missed the connection. I'm a bit slow that way sometimes.

I love what you did with the Sunrays text though, it looks really, really great. Very nice idea, I'm going to have to keep that in mind for future inspiration.

The only suggestion I'd make is to make the San Jose a little bigger; it looks too small at the moment and as a result doesn't feel as integrated into the design as it would if it were somewhat larger. Perhaps try making it so that its baseline stretches from the left side of the U to the left side of the R in Sunrays.

Again, great work on the Sunrays text, it looks fantastic.

If you could make San Jose bigger that would rock, I barely see it on this screen. Good job!!!

Cuss,

I feel somewhat dumb offering a suggestion on something I couldn't have done myself (lol) but I think this is a case where the sunray needs to be defined a bit clearer by either its border or maybe its shade. It didn't "pop out" at me at first - had to stare at it to see what that was under the text.

Excellent concept though, and I applaud you

Whereas most of the logo makers went with bright colors throughout for Sunrays, cuss went with the black background. Daring, but for this concept, I think a lighter background would work well. Still, like I said in my first post, it's one of the best I've seen posted this week!

Beautiful Sunrays script...exceptional lettering.

Very fine colors.

Designer is exceptionally skilled graphically.

Now for the "nitpicks"...

Keep in mind "beauty is the eye of the beholder".

Design could be improved.

Prefer "sunshine" design rather than sea animal...relates to California better for me.

Like city name large enough to be seen in OOTPB...I must be blind...I do not see it.

I did not see the "ray"...it should be obvious what the image is IMO.

Try to use all of the space for the logo, if you can and still not damage the concept...maybe make it a little larger.

And it should be included in the "Favorites" compilation.

Techically, you are perhaps the most skilled and knowledgeable graphics person on the forum. However there are quite a few less skilled who produce more useable logos...at least for me. Graphically you are great...but need to be more "commercial" and less "fancy" in design. And yes, I'm a traditionalist (some may say "picky old codger", which is true, too) rather than modernistic in preference, so that may be the reason I prefer the other designers. You like the modern style logo. Nothing wrong with that...we just have difference preferences.

Having said that...you still do very fine logos.

I see the "ray" now...it is very well done.

Cuss, I am also the same guy that didn't see a big "G" when Fastlane did a New York Giants logo...it took me a day to figure it out after I was told.

It was behind the "NY".

Well, I know I'm the odd one out here, but I'm going to go against popular opinion and say that I'm not terribly crazy about it. It would be a great logo to use if the name of the team were the "Ray Sharks," but this concept just doesn't work for me.

I can appreciate the fact that you were trying to go a different route than the obvious sun idea, but in this particular case, I tend to believe that maybe the obvious idea actually would have been the best idea. You say that the name "Sunrays" relates to "Devil Rays," which may be true, but their meanings are completely different. Whereas the Tampa Bay Devil Rays represent an animal, the name "Sunrays" was chosen to represent the wine industry in and around the San Jose area, with the sun being the central focus (since that is one of the main factors in the production of the wine).

You have some real talent, I just don't think this particular logo really showcases it.

Well Chris, I don't think I meant that taking the shark route is a better concept than the sun. I simply chose this route because I anticipated most people doing something along the lines of a shining sun, and if I had done somethign similar, it would just be yet another sun in the bunch. But I personally would rather take a chance and do something drastic or "revolutionary" if I get a chance. I mean how often does one get to be creative with absolutely no regard for any consequences. If it's bad, then it's bad, but at least I know I did not just follow, I lead.

I really like the changes...It is excellent in the design...but agree with dbacks...a sunshine/vineyard theme would have fit the name "Sunrays" better.

It is really a beautiful logo graphically and visually now...but I would have liked "San Jose" larger, so it would show up well in the game.

Good call by jnshmoo to put it in the favorites compilation.

It deserves it.

Didn't mean to imply I thought it was bad.

But the fact of the matter is, if you had done something along the lines of a sun, it wouldn't be just another sun in the bunch. I think you could take a team named the Abuja Cotton Swabs and make an interesting logo out of it. I just thought that even if you went the same route as everyone else, you may actually have made a better logo too.
