How has everybody's experience been with a commissioner that didn't own a team in the league, just ran things. I am considering this for my celebrity league, but would like to hear which one you guys think is better overall for the league? Any plus or minues you guys know od would be helpful.

what possible enjoyment would just RUNNING the league be? You into S&M as well? You like pain?

hehe .. I considered running a league that I didn't play in .... once
I can see the benefit of not owning a team, but it also takes a LOT of the fun out of it. And being a commish DOES take a LOT of work.

I am in 2 online leagues, both of which the Commissioner had a team. However, the manner in which the Commissioner "competed" was strikingly different in each league.
League A: Commissioner is an active participant as far as team development but not feverishly so. Once in awhile he seeks out a trade. For three seasons his team has been in the lower half of the standings. His integrity has never been questioned and he does things like sending his free agent bids (password protected until after bidding is over) to the rest of the league to ensure no one thinks any funny business could go on. League B: Commissioner is very vocal about the success of his team and seems to have a great team season after season. He seems to relish beating the pants off everyone. He has the best minor league system and has made a couple trades that he really made out in. Commissioner does not go out of his way to make it look like everything is on the up and up. I think that you will find you have more vested in your league if you run a team as well. However, how you run that team could play a part in the enjoyment of the other team owners. It's a tough act to balance the impartiality of being the league commissioner while rooting for your team to perform well. I admire those that do it well! |

Thanks for the reply batter up. I'm leaning toward running a team now, but still am not sure. I created the league file so this is sort of my baby in terms of contribution to the community, so I'm sure I wont lose interest. Hopefully I get a couple more replies, especially one from someone who has run a league without owning a team

I had always thought that I would run a league as a commissioner without running a team. You can make it fun by analyzing the entire league, and being the press, and a whole lot more. It depends on what you want to create. really.

My commish in JBL doesnt own a team. He loves it.
If you like just watching your league build, and giving it a personality(lots of headlines, etc), then go for it.
