OOTP Champions League

Hi, folks. I'm jgross68 from the Off-Topic forum. You may remember me from such fun-filled threads as "Monkey Rodeo" and "Monkey Rodeo 2 - Whiplash Goes To Summer Camp!" Now, I don't tend to crawl out from the nurturing biosphere of Off-Topic very often, and when I do it's usually little more than a "+1" or an inane comment. But every once in a while I get an idea, and I thought I'd throw this one out there for your consideration.

If you're familiar with European soccer (or "football") then you probably know about the UEFA Champions League, which is a tournament that brings together the best teams from across Europe to compete against each other during the season. If this sounds like Iatric's idea from this thread (or this one) it is similar, but there is one key difference: This isn't a "league" per se, but would bring together some of the best teams from around the OOTP universe to compete in a play-off for the coveted OOTP Champions League title.

Here's what I have figured out so far:
At the end of a league's season, and before pressing the magic "Continue to Next Season" button, the participating league's champion (and potentially the league's runner-up) will be imported into the Champions League. That way the OOTP Champions League will exist independent of the originating leagues and should not interfere with scheduling, since not all online leagues follow the same schedule and will therefore not end at the same time. There won't be an actual "season" played out in the CL, but rather a play-off format will be devised that may or may not include a group play round-robin (like the UEFA CL) before moving on to the knock-out play-offs.

Beyond that I haven't fleshed out many details yet, so feel free to offer suggestions. I'm also thinking about the following qualifications for participating leagues:

  • League should be "mature" (i.e., has been around for at least five seasons; possible special dispensation for the OTBA since that's where the idea got hatched)
  • League must be in the modern era
    - This brings up an issue about the Champions League regarding era settings. How best to do this? Average out the included leagues' settings? Use a default OOTP setting? Thoughts?
  • Fictional players only... Or would it be cool to have one real players league in there?
So: thoughts? Good idea? Idiotic rambling from a guy who's been playing too much Football Manager 2005 lately? Huh?

I don't know if your idea is different, but there was someone else who was doing something like this already. You might want to check some of the past posts.

Ideally, the participating leagues would be fairly close to each other in terms of era/league settings, so as to level the playing field. In that regard, I don't suppose it matters all that much year the league is in so long as the settings are reasonably close.

P.S., I hadn't thought about what a boon this would be to my post count. All-Star bench, here I come!

Here is an example of a recent Tourney we had involving All-star teams from 4 different leagues:

Let me know if you need any suggestions, etc.

I'm not sure how many teams you're hoping to attract but it is my opinion that your "qualifications" (modern, fictional, 5 years, etc.) will severely limit the pool of possible leagues.

I was thinking 16 teams to start. Maybe 32.

Alright, first off, Cuss has done this already once and it worked out brilliantly. It was called July Madness or something.

Second, will solo-leagues be allowed in?

Yes, I'm starting to see just how incredibly unoriginal this was.

Doubtful on the solo leagues.
