I just started a brand new fictional league that is based upon real players from 1970. I had a 21 year old kid named Pete Broberg who made the starting rotation. He threw one pitch in his major league debut, the batter grounded out, and poor Pete threw out a disc in his back. He is lost for at least two months. I wonder if this is a sign of things to come for his career? I love this game! Just thought I'd share.

I once had a fictional 2b that I drafted and brought up through the minors. I was very exited because at 26 his ratings were all 7's except a 9 for homers. He also had an A for stealing and an A for speed to go with a .995 fielding percentage and a B range.
In the first inning of his first career game, he dove for a ball and suffered a career ending injury! He never even got an at bat! Needless to say I took a break from ootp for a couple of days. |

Here's a nice first round pick story:
Drafted a catcher number 1 rated Excellent across the board. Listed #1 in top 100 prospects...(I feel good!) By July he is already at AA. (I can taste the Hall of Fame, this guy is next year's Rookie of the Year...) By August, he is out for season and he ratings are now Fair across the board. (Now I am cursing the G-ds of injury....) By Beginning of Next Season I click on the player and drag to RELEASE. (I have enough bad catchers already...) |

On the other side of the coin, in my 1886 or 1887 season, Flip Lafferty threw a no-hitter in his first major league start. Obviously a rare occurance, has that ever happened "in real life"?

Or am I thinking of Alex Fernandez? Or am I nuts?

In my current season,2006, I had a 24 year old right handed starter pitch a complete game 1-hitter. He struck out 7 and walked 2 giving up a run.
Funny thing was it was just an emergency start as I had a bad streak with injuries. I lost 2 starting pitchers to short term injuries and my no 1 setup man to a 2 month injury which forced me to use my normally 4th starter in an extra inning game. If it wasn't for some bad breaks he would not have had an oppurtunity to pitch this year. I had planned to review his progress after spring training next season and though he might have a shot at the 5th starter spot, if not, I was going to try and trade him. You just never know whats going to happen in baseball or OOTP. |

Wilson Alvarez pitched a no hitter in his 1st start ever for the White Sox in 1991, although it was his 2nd game in the majors. In 1989, he pitched a game for the Rangers and gave up 3 or 4 runs without retiring anybody. I think he was traded to the Sox the next day or something like that...

regarding Alvarez, he was a prized Texas prospect at the time, and the White Sox were in the toilet. Larry Himes (Sox GM) engineered a deal with the Rangers in 1989, sending Harold Baines and Fred Manrique to Texas for Wilson Alvarez, Scotty Flethcer and a guy named Sammy Sosa. And, as we all know, Sosa was later traded to the Cubs for George Bell and cash. I still contend that the deal wasn't that bad for my Sox. Sure, in the long run it was, but they needed another stick in the middle of the order for a pennant run, and Sosa couldn't hit a beach ball at the time.

I drafted an 21 year old SP named Jason Wolfe in the 1st round a few years back. He had talents/ratings of AAB/117 and a 10 velocity. In his second minor league season, while at AA, he suffered a season ending injury, after which his talent dropped to FAB, though his actual ratings did not change. I kept him around. He fought his way back from the injury over the the next couple of years and finaly made it to AAA this year at age 24, and had AAB talents again. By mid-season he was rated 6 6 9 10. In august, he suffered a season ending injury, which dropped him to FAB 4 6 9 10. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />
