A's seek Meyer (and others) for Hudson

The Braves and A's are talking about Hudson again. Schuerholtz is about to give away too much. From MLB.com....

"In exchange for Hudson, the A's are seeking Dan Meyer, a left-handed pitcher the Braves say is definitely ready for the Majors, and two other prespects. The southpaw posted a 2.67 ERA while making 27 appearances between Double A-Greenville and Triple-A Richmond last season."

The Braves have a long history of trading away their great young talent under Schuerholtz (Jason Schmidt, Kevin Millwood, etc.). Of course, they keep winning division titles so who am I to complain. But, I hate to see the potentially great young guns go. I saw Meyer pitch many times in 2003 with the Rome Braves (A ball) and he really is an impressive young pitcher. I have followed him closely through Greenville to Richmond. I wish they would keep him and let him develop in the majors - as they did with Glavine and Smoltz.

They have three other great young arms in the minor system right now. Hope they allow at least one of them prove himself before handing him a parachute.

This deal sucks if there is no Giles involved.

Good for Oakland.

They've got the real bargaining chip: A proven ace entering the prime of his career.

If they're going to trade that away, they have more than a right to ask for an Edwin Jackson or Dan Meyer. Despite how great those guys may have been in AA and AAA-ball, and no matter how ready they may be considered for the majors, neither of them are Tim Hudson. They have no track record to back anything up.

I don't think it's asking too much at all.

It's not asking too much - it's asking too little. Why trade a proven ace who is arguably one of the top 5 pitchers in the game for prospects? They should be able to get at least one proven player out of this deal.

Obviously I'm not Billy Beane and I don't know what he's thinking for this season. The Kendall deal made me think the A's are still looking to contend in 2005. A deal of Huddy for prospects sure looks like rebuilding to me, and that sucks.

I agree.

I don't know much about Meyer, but if he's ready for the majors, then yes, he needs to be involved in this trade. But not the centerpiece by any means.

Hudson is worth Giles and Meyer. If the Braves are reluctant to move Giles, then fine, let them come out of this off-season with Kevin Brown instead of Tim Hudson.

This isn't a trade for Randy Johnson, where you're getting a 40-year old starter who may only be looking at one or two more years.

This is a deal involving a young pitcher, an ace at that, in the prime of his career.
