Jim Bowden is trying hard to find excuses for the new owner to fire him.

Yeah, Guzman I can understand (not for over 4 million per though) when you have Maicer Izturis or Jamey Carroll or some other nobody at SS, but Vinny? At age 37 and outside of Coors Field he'll be back to .250 with 20 homers and 60 RBI's. And that's expensive for those stats and that age.

I like signings, just not the money he gave them. Guzman isn't that bad of a player. Castilla...well, cant hurt the team any more, can he?

Guzman is a pathetic offensive player and up until this year was a very mediocre defender. His OBP has hovered right around .300 for three straight years. 4.2 mil for four years for that. Yuck.

Oh, the joy of knowing Vinny Castilla won't be back!

Wow, I'm trying to figure out since when it takes over 4 mil a year for 4 years to sign a career .685 OPS player like Guzman. 2001 is the only good season Guzman has had out of his 6 years and even then that was his only year with an OPS over .700 posting a .814

The money they gave these guys is way too much, but moving to a new city requires you to sign someone, just to show that there's effort being made.
There isn't hardly any buzz (from what I've seen) in Washington over this team, and adding Castilla and Guzman won't likely change that. But at the very least, it's a step in the right direction (not necessarily towards competing, but towards being active, which Montreal typically wasn't).

Now that they're making moves, when are they going to decide on a name already?

These are both essentially avg players signed at close to avg money, though Guzman was a little high. I wouldn't do the deal, but they arne't the worst signings in the world.
Guzman was a 'c' FA, right?, so there is no comp even with the early signing. Vinny, though, was a Type A, so washington essentially traded a #2 pick (they will be too high for a #1, I think), which seems like a lot. Personally, I think the vizquel signing was much worst. Edit: Guzman was a 'b', not a 'c'. I have no idea what happens when a team signs multiple players, though I assume it is a first come first serve system for doling out the draft picks.

Just perfect. Lets raise payroll by about 20 million and start spending it on garbage.

Realistically though, there are reasons there isn't much excitement. There's no Washington merchandise to purchase, and even more over, it's the middle of football season, and Washington is a football city through and through. Even in Baltimore, people are more interested in the Ravens (boo) than the Orioles (yay). Anytime a team moves to a new city, there's going to be some kind of stir. Season tickets will sell, because if you don't get them now, you'll be sitting on a waiting list. And any diehard baseball lover would love to have tickets to an inaugural season for a relocated team. But in general, the excitement level could be higher. But once a team name (Nationals) is made official, that will probably all change. It's impossible to market the team right now, but that'll change.

I think they did this because they need some kind of established nams on the roster to appeal to their new fans. Plue they would not have been able to lure many players this early in FA unless big $ were involved. The deals aren't that outrageous. $4mm+ for a decent SS is not too bad. He can bat lead off, run a little, and play D. Castilla, I don't know why they signed him. I know why he signed but no the opposite.
