One more chance....please
With my last league going by the wayside due to catobase problems, I am willing to give it one more shot so here goes......
My league will start in 1900 with fictionals players but with s twist. Each draft, I will be changing some of the top 5 drafts picks to names you may be familiar with. Example..... 1900 the Reds select OF Tom Jones with the #2 pick. I will go in and edit nothing but the name to Sam Crawford. Crawford being a big name for the Reds at that time or era. We will start the league at the allstart break of 1902 and already some story lines are appearing. Baltimore is on its way to becoming our first dynasty and I correctly predicted the trade of Matty McIntyre would go down in folklore history. I also write up a preview up each upcoming season... So with that, we pick it up on a sunny July day, allstar break and baseball is in the air......roll camera's in 3,2,1................ 1902 ALLSTAR BREAK………………… Boston jumped out to a early lead in April and May but fell off to 6 games behind the Whitesox. Baltimore is just 2.5 games back. Chicago(N) had a 3.5 game lead over both Atlanta and Houston. Pittsburgh is 4.5 back. Everyone is still in the race as ever last place SF are just 7.5 games back. 1902 ALLSTAR GAME………. NOTES…… David Yeldell(.401,10,53) became the first player in history to be hitting .400 at the allstar game. Yeldell is the back up RF for the game and plays for the Dodgers. Last years Cy winner John Madrigal(10-3, 2.14) of the Whitesox gets the start for the AL against Adam Middleton(10-6, 3.09) of the Astros. Kenneth Longshore hit a 2-run homer off Adam Middleton in the top of the 2nd to give the AL a lead they never relinquished in a 4 to 2 win. Longshore of the Twins went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI to win the games MVP award. Madrigal was the winner going 3 innings giving up 1 run, a homer to Gerald Frasure of the Pirates. TRADE DEADLINE 1902.……………………. The Cubs made a huge deal to get 2B Richard Salter(.273,22,75) from the last place Tigers. Salter was an allstar in 1900 and 1901. In return the Tigers get 1B Gregory Leiva(.267,8,44) who was the starting 1B for the Cubs and won a ring in 1900. Leiva hit .324 last year. They also got 16yr old MR John Ibarra a 5-star prospect and RF Ronald Stansbury(.304,8,45,16sb in A) a 2.5 star prospcet who is 23yrs old. The Reds picked up former ROY Sylvester Allen(8-11, 4.25) from the Royals as a #3 starter. Then made another trade to get #2 starter Robert Squier(4-10, 3.81) from the A’s. Baltimore got RF Matty McIntyre(.217,1,14) from Oakland and proptly put him into the lineup. Baltimore sent the A’s last year starting 3B Jacob Davis who had lost his job to 22yr old prospect Matthwe Enlow(.298,9,42). I think Oakland will regret the day they let Matty get away. Cleveland gave up last years #1 pick overall Candy LaChance(.340,4,17), sending him to the Yankees for P James Bahr(9-8, 2.30) who will step right into the #2 starter roll. PENNANT RACE…………… Atlanta played Houston while the Reds had the Dodgers for the last series of the year. Atlanta held a 2 game lead with 3 games to play. In game one, the Reds scored in the bottom of the 9th to win 3 to 2. The Braves however scored in the bottom of the 10th to win 7 to 6. Having to win there final 2 games and hope the Braves lost their final 2, the Reds took a 5 to 4 lead into the top of the 9th only to see Dodger CF John Chichester(.274,26,74) hit a 1-out 3-run double to beat the Reds 7 to 5. The Braves won anyway to seal the deal. In the AL, the Baltimore Orioles went 102-60 to set a record for wins by a team breaking the old record of 95 by the 1900 New York Mets. Baltimore won the Pennant by 10 games over the Whitesox. WORLD SERIES PREVEIW……BALTIMORE (102-60) VS ATLANTA (92-70) Baltimore was 1st in runs(803) and third in runs allowed(653). The lineup includes Steven Otte(.321,32,101) who had a great year after being picked up from California for a prospect. AS 2B James Isakson(.309,27,95), 3B Matthew Enlow(.275,21,67) and power hitting LF Robert Imes(.287,37,90) produced. Enlow was another player pick up in a trade. The Orioles will send Austin Johnson(17-10, 3.21), Henry Amundson(14-9, 3.78),the third person obtained thru trades, and Kenneth Dodrill(10-5, 3.19) who has won his last 5 starts and looks to be healed from last years back problems. The Braves won despite horrible pitching, as their staff finished 15th with a ERA of 4.12 and 15th in runs allowed with 730. Hitting was better than average. “Swordfish Davidson(16-8, 3.55), tender armed Sean Clark(13-8, 3.78) and 23yr old Everett Virgin(17-8, 4.01) will have their hands full. C Anthony Wilham(.323,16,75) and 23yr old Stephen Cowden(.280,27,100) will be relied upon to score runs. The Braves worst to first was due mostly to mediocrity in the NL this year. PREDICTION: ORIOLES IN 6. BALTIMORE 8.……ATLANTA 3 Orioles lay 6 runs on losing pitcher Sean Clark in the 4th and coast to victory. Matty McIntyre hits 2 homers. Amundson got the win going 7.1 and giving up 3 runs. BALTIMORE 2.……ATLANTA 5 Braves even the series behind Swordfish Davidson’s 8 strong innings. ATLANTA 1.……….BALTIMORE 10 Kenneth Dodrill stayed hot winning his 6th straight, going the distance. 1B Steven Otte went 3 for 4 with 2 homers and 7 rbi. ATLANTA 6.……….BALTIMORE 1 Braves just wont go away as they score 5 runs in the 1st off Henry Amundson. S.Clark got even for a game 1 loss by going the distance. ATLANTA 0.……….BALTIMORE 6 Austin Johnson went 8 innings giving up just 2 hits as the Orioles shut out the Braves. Matty McIntyre added 3 more hits and his 3 homer for the Braves. BALTIMORE 3.……..ATLANTA 4 The Braves force a game 7 as Everett Virgin went 7 strong innings. Oriole starter Kenneth Dodrill pitched to just one hitter before having to leave with an arm injury. BALTIMORE 5.……..ATLANTA 3 Game 7 saw Amundson and Clark take the mound for the 3rd time in the series. Each had won one and lost one. Amundson went 8 strong innings giving up just 1 as the Orioles are World Champs as expected. NOTES………… Matty McIntyre hit .407 with 3 homers and 4 rbi to be named World Series MVP. S.Otte had 7 rbi but the all came in one game. AWARDS…………………….. AL CY YOUNG- JOHN MADRIGAL(CHI) (18-9, 2.62)- Won his 2nd straight. BALTIMORE- Should be very good again, will move MR J.Trimm into #1 starter role, A.Johnson(17-10,3.21) and H.Amundson(14-9,3.78) in 2 and 3. 2B J.Isakson(.309,27,95) leads off, R.Imes(.287,37,90) bats 3rd, Matty McIntyre 4th. 1B S.Otte(.321,32,101) 7th . Great hitting lineup. Prediction 1st again. 98 wins CHICAGO(A)- Start with 2-time Cy winner J.Madrigal(18-9, 2.62). From there its average. Hitting has K.Pugsley(.343,23,74) batting 3rd, 1B D.Robertson(.332,21,98) 4th, C J.Major(.320) 5th……Not enough pitching to stay with Orioles…Prediction 3rd, 89 wins. CALIFORNIA- W.Burford is back but pitching a problem. V.Navarra(.308,45,104), SS B.Bramblett(.307,32,110) and CF R.Stowell(.325) give them a good middle of the lineup but other spots weak……Prediction: 4th, 85 wins CLEVELAND- J.Bahr(15-14, 2.48) who came over in the LaChance trade is now the ace. 1B D.Cogdell(.332,36,91), 3B B.Hunsinger(.339) cant run the offense alone. Prediction: 8th, MINNESOTA- T.Saad is back. C K.Longshore(.294,22,61) and RF C.Victorino(.315,28,94) are their best hitters. 1B M.Rigney(.267,30,101) and SS H.Johnsen(.280,24,67) probably wont be as productive. Prediction: worse than 5th BOSTON: G.Ketterer won 18 games and is the #3 starter but he wont repeat, hitting is a huge problem other than N.Speck(.299,19,72) at catcher. Look for a big drop…Predict 10th NEW YORK: Pitching isn’t as bad as it seem, Curtis Ly is the best career 28-44 pitcher you will see. If youngsters 1B C.LaChance(.322,15,46), B.Stocksill(.305,32,86) and M.Dolin(.285,16,62) all grow up this year the Yanks will surprise……Still a year or 2 away…Predict 5th OAKLAND: The outfield of 23yr old LF J.Kerney(.250,14,68), CF J.Nardi(.257,23,62), and RF H.Risk(.347,18,92) isn’t bad. ……Predict 8th again KANSAS CITY: Remember the 1900 team that won it. They got old. Not much pitching. Garland Carrick(.281,26,66) should have a better year but that’s it……Predict 9th DETROIT: F.Jakes(12-11, 2.99) is still around but 2B Salter is gone, SS J.Obrien(.277,33,86) is about all that is left. Dennis Jordan(.219,1,14) a 22yr old catching prospect will get a shot as the Tigers regular catcher is hurt…..Prediction: 7th NATIONAL LEAGUE…….. ATLANTA: Good pitching lead by Swordfish Davidson(16-8, 3.55), Sean Clark(13-8, 3.78), J.Dimick(12-7, 3.25) and E.Virgin(17-8, 4.01). C A.Wilham(.323,16,75) and 2B S.Cowden(.280,27,100) will have to get some help to repeat. CINCINNATI: Back to back 2nd place finishes has the Reds hungry but R.Gordon(16-6, 3.32) is their only solid pitcher. But with RF F.Eastland(.365,27,73) and 1B T.Setliff(.305,40,120) they will score some runs. PITTSBURGH: Robert Stevens(19-8, 3.21) has won back to back Cy Youngs. C.Hibner(11-14, 3.23) is also fair. CF H.Hairston(.298,18,67) will miss at least 5 more weeks with an injury, if he comes back 100 percent the Pirates are still in the race, he, SS E.Stamant(.299,5,58) and MVP G.Frasure(.337,42,123) will lead the team to the Pennant. CHICAGO(N): W.Berkowitz(14-9, 3.87) and B.Millsaps(16-12, 3.67) will keep the Cubs in the Pennnat chase. N.Dodson(.331,19,86), R.Salter(.271,23,82) and 3B A.Sabb(.347,45,99) could then win it for them. LOS ANGELES: W.Weems(10-16, 3.63) should bounce back and have a better year. SS S.Leblanc(.322,24,87) and NL batting champ D.Yeldell(.373,14,88) will try to carry the load. SAN FRANCISCO: With D.Desousa(12-10, 2.94), R.Crews(11-4, 2.94) and E.Kemmer(2-1,1.95) they have the pitching to be in the hunt. Kemmer will miss the first 3 weeks of the season. NEW YORK(N)- W.Potts(16-11, 3.17) is still an ace type pitcher and P.Fortenberry(17-7, 3.21) was solid last year. CF B.Townley(.337,24,86) can still put up MVP type numbers like he did in 1901. ST.LOUIS: C M.McCreary(.299,28,80) and LF F.Lewis(.267,37,97) are the only bright spots on the team…..Here is you basement team. PHILADELPHIA: J.Dixon(16-13, 3.22) is it for pitching which is to bad because 1B J.Brixey(.341,21,108), 2B J.Geist(.273,25,77) and 3B J.Jones(.287,24,80) should score runs. HOUSTON: To talented of a pitching staff to finish last again. A.Middleton(.15-17, 3.26), J.Johnson(15-11, 3.92) and 21yr old prospect J.Castellano(1-8,3.35) are pretty good. Other than R.Loflin(.273,40,101) however the hitting cupboard is bare. 22yr old 3B prospect S.Strang the #3 pick overall in 1901 will get to start at 3B. PREDICTION: PITTSBURGH and CHICAGO battle it out. ALLSTAR BREAK SUMMARY……………….. Baltimore as expected is leading the AL by 7.5 games. This being done mostly with pitching as the Orioles have the 2nd best staff in the league. J.Trimm leads the team with 10 wins. Pittsburgh leads the NL by 2 games over the Phils and 2.5 over the Mets. The Cubs led early but have fallen 5 games back. ALLSTAR GAME……………… William “The Big Cat” Burford(9-5, 2.35) got the nod from Earl Weaver to be the AL starter. While the NL counters with Cubs Brett Millsaps(9-4, 3.05) The NL blew a 5 run lead as the AL score 6 runs in the 7th for a 7 to 6 win. Burford pitched 3 hitless innings for the AL and Kenneth Pugsley of the Whitesox went 3 for 4 and was named the games MVP. TRADE DEADLINE………………….. Baltimore swapped starting pitchers with the Giants sending Harry Amundson(10-4, 3.01) to the Giants for Donnie Desousa(4-3, 2.88). Desousa was and allstar last year for the Giants. Amundson won 2 games in last years World Series for the Orioles. SEPTEMBER 1, 1902 SUMMARY……….. Baltimore has all but locked up its 2nd AL Pennant in a row with a 10 game lead. Orioles could become the first team to win over a 100 games and be the 1st to do it back to back. The Orioles will need to go 19-12 to reach 100. Pittsburgh’s lead was as big as 7 games but Cincinnati made a run and has cut it to 3 games, while the Cubs are still learking just 4.5 back. PENNANT RACE HIGHLIGHTS………. Pittsburgh holds a 3 game cushion over the Reds with just 3 to play. The Reds will need a miracle. Cincinnati will be at Houston while LA entertains the Pirates. The Pirates ended the Reds hopes right away beating the Dodgers 7 to 5 as Christian Hibner won his 18th game. WORLD SERIES PREVIEW…BALTIMORE (99-63) VS PITTSBURGH (97-65) Baltimore came within one game of winning 100 games for the 2nd straight year. For the Orioles again it was great pitching as they allowed just 624 runs, lowest in baseball. The O’s also scored 624 runs good for 3rd in the league. The Orioles will go with Jamel Trimm(13-7, 2.65), Austin Johnson(16-7, 2.95) and Donnie Desousa(8-8, 3.44). Kenneth Dodrill(14-10, 4.01) will move to the bullpen. Hitting will rely on power hitters Robert Imes(.282,37,83) and Matty McIntyre(.297,34,114). Matty was last years World Series MVP and set an AL record with 114 RBI this year. The Pirates bring in the 2nd best offense in baseball and the 5th best pitching. The Pirates lost starting 1B Steven Wint early in the season but Steven Phares(.275,20,87) filled in nicely. The offense is lead by 2b Gerald Frasure(.357,41,109) who could win his 2nd straight MVP. Herman Hairston(.318,30,103) also will be a factor. The Pirates will send 18game winner ‘s Robert Stevens(18-9, 3.15) and Christian Hibner(18-11, 3.50) for sure and then are leaning toward converted MR Herman Ferrer(4-4, 2.56) for game 3. Despite having Perry Sandoz(19-6, 2.75). PITTSBURGH 12.………BALTIMORE 4 Herman Hairston goes 5 for 5 as the Orioles score 12 runs on 18 hits. Johnson lasted just 2.1 innings for the Orioles. BALTIMORE 5.…………PITTSBURGH 4 Charles Sarvis went 3 for 5 including a leadoff double in the top of the 11th to eventually score the winning run. NOTES………………………. 1904 SEASON PREVIEW…………………………
AMERICAN LEAGUE………………….. Baltimore is again going to be the favorite for a repeat. Long time pitching coach Jamaal Long retired but pitching will still be the O’s strong suite. J.Trimm(13-7, 2.65), A.Johnson(16-7, 2.95) and D.Desousa(8-8, 3.44) are back, the offense still has R.Imes(.282,37,83) and M.McIntyre(.297,34,114). Prediction 1st. Oakland has 2 18-game winners in B.Clayton and G.Bibeau along with W.Bertram(12-9,3.57) and M.Elsner(15-12, 4.14). J.Nardi(.320,34,85) will hit 3rd. Prediction: 2nd New York is the only other team we see competing. C.Ly(13-10, 2.97) and D.Leedom(13-12, 2.97) should give just enough pitching for a good young offense led by C.Lachance(.308,43,103), B.Stockstill(.303,25,89), R.Loflin(.318,35,87) and M.Dolin(.315,21,76). Prediction 3rd, may even move up to 2nd. CLEVELAND- Good pitching led by CY YOUNG winner James Bahr(19-7, 2.97) and B.Kleinschmidt(16-10, 3.16). MVP D.Cogdell(.312,48,107) and 3B B.Hunsinger(.357,15,86) will lead the offense. Prediction 4th DETROIT- Look for the Tigers to rebound somewhat under new manager Willie Horton. Pitching could be trouble but F.Jakes(12-14, 3.91) should rebound. J.Obrien(.319,39,100) again will carry the load….Predict: improved from 8th to 5th. MINNESOTA- Trenton Saad(16-10, 3.58) is now 36 and not getting any younger. But a good hitting team led by C K.Longshore(.328,22,73), SS H.Johnson(.307,23,89) and RF C.Victorino(.313,21,81)..Predict 6th CHICAGO(A)- Stud J.Madrigal(14-11, 3.41) and T.Artz(15-7, 3.59) wont keep the Sox from falling this year. 1B D.Robertson(.334,25,107) and CF K.Pugsley(.309,16,64) cant hurt however. Predict: 7th CALIFORNIA- Desptie W.Burford(15-8. 2.96) being a good pitcher the Angels hit just .242 as a team. Prediction 8th BOSTON- The Sox are headed in the wrong direction. J.Barreto(16-9, 3.36 is about it in the rotation. And the team hit just .246 last year. Prediction: 9th KANSAS CITY- Hit .262 as a team but has the worst pitching in the AL. 2B Garland Carrick(.302,21,66,24sb) can only dream about the 1900 team that won the AL. NATIONAL………….. CINCINNATI- Look for the Reds to finally win it after 3 straight 2nd place finishes. K.Urbanek(18-9, 3.08), R.Squier(13-7, 3.55) and R.Gordon(17-7, 3.37) can compete with anyone. T.Setliff(.312,39,113) and F.Eastland(.277,377,103) lead an offense that hit .267 last year. Prediction: 1st PITTSBURGH- The defending NL champs will be in the race till the end. Not quite as good a pitching as the Reds but R.Stevens(18-9, 3.15), H.Ferrer(4-4,2.56), C.Hibner(18-11, 3.50), and P.Sandoz(19-6, 2.75) might have more depth. 2-time MVP G.Frasure(.357,41,109) and H.Hairston(.318,30,103) lead one of the best offenses in the league. Prediciton 2nd. CHICAGO(N)- The Cubs last won the Pennant in 1901 and this year should be in the race. B. Millsaps(20-9, 3.17) was last years only 20 game winner. A. McCoy(16-10,3.10) combines to give the Cubs the pitching they need. R.Salter(.285,21,70), A.Sabb(.270,43,96) and N.Dodson(.284,19,84) will determine how far this team goes. Prediction: 3rd NEW YORK(N)- The Mets won it all in 1900. W.Potts(17-10, 3.31) and K.Drake(12-11, 3.19) need to pitch well for the Mets to contend. B.Townley(.301,25,76) the 1901 MVP and 3B R.Tatham(.278,30,85) are still the straws that stir the drink. 1B B.Long(.253,31,114) will also need to duplicate his numbers this year…Predict 4th PHILADELPHIA- J.Dixon(10-11, 3.37) needs to improve his numbers and R.Fraser(16-12, 3.70) and D.Friedman(14-11, 3.67) need to pitch well for the Phills to be a threat. The bats are solid led by S.Geist(.283,22,77) and 3B J.Jones(.310,19,60). Predict: 5th again. LOS ANGELES- W.Weems(14-3, 2.68) missed 2 ½ months last year but is still a major player. SS S.Leblanc(.333,17,70) however cant do it alone. D.Yeldell(.300,12,77) saw his average drop 73 points after setting a league record with a .373 average in 1902...Predict 6th SAN FRANSICO- H.Amundson(14-10, 3.22) and C.Layfield(11-13, 3.81) give them okay pitching. R.Crews(18-10, 3.28) will be hard pressed to duplicate his 1903 season. The Giants however hit just .235 last year, low in either league. 3B T.Swatzell(.322,42,100) is the lone bright spot…Predict 7th HOUSTON- The Astros have a new manager in Joe Morgan and some decent pitching in A.Middleton(15-12, 2.79), J.Johnson(12-13, 3.56) and youngster J.Castellano(6-9, 3.75). Their hitting is dreadful however. On a side note, last years #2 pick overall J.Kling won the catching job and will leadoff…Predict 8th ST.LOUIS- A new manager in Lou Brock wont make this team hit. Young pitcher J.King(12-7, 3.33) is a solid prospect. 31yr old C M.McCreary(.269,26,85) is still capable… Prediction 9th for 3rd straight year. ATLANTA- Also with a new manager in Davey Johnson. He may want to give the job back after the year ends as the Braves were not a very good hitting team and the pitching was the worst in the league…. Predict 10th. 1904 ALLSTAR BREAK SUMMARY Baltimore again sits atop the AL with a 47-35 record. As expected, Cleveland(1) and New York(2.5) are still in the hunt. Detroit has been playing as good as anyone lately and is just 3 back. KC has also been a surprise and is 1.5 back. Oakland has been the biggest disappointment despite B.Clayton(13-3, 3.09) having a great year. The Cubs, Reds and Pirates are at the top where expected. Chicago leads Cincy by 2 and PIT by 2.5, New York has been a dissapointment falling 8.5 back. NEWS AND NOTES……….. Three pitchers have already thrown no-hitters, Greg Bibeau(OAK), Robert Squier(CIN) and Larry Cammarata(CAL). In trades of note, the Giants sent starting 1B B.Long(.236,8,27) to St.Louis for P Bill Canale and 2B Bill Dreher. Long had averaged 30 homers a year the last 4 years but the Mets felt 26yr old T.Ngo(.273,3,17) was the answer at 1B. Canale(9-6,3.65) gives the Mets a #3 starter while Dreher was packaged and sent to Cincy in another deal. The Whitesox pick up a #3 starter in Richard Desouza(8-8, 3.30). Desousa went 17-8 for the Red Sox in the first year of the league and looked like he would be a great pitcher. However he had been just mediocre the last 3 years for the Twins. In return the Twins got 1B Hyman Barbour who will get a chance to play everyday for the Twins replacing M.Rigney(.278,13,38). 1904 ALLSTAR GAME…………… J.Madrigul of the Whitesox and Brett Millsaps of the Cubs will both be starting their 2nd AS game. Madrigal was the CY winner in the NL in 1901 and 1902 while Millsaps was the league’s only 20-game winner last year. Millsaps(14-2, 1.95) had one of the better 1st halves ever for a pitcher. The NL jumped on Madrigul for 3 runs in the first 3 innings and went on to defeat the AL 7 to 5. Tony Swatzell (SF) went 3 for 4 and was named the games MVP. Swatzell is a 4-time allstar who has hit 42 homers each of the last 2 years. TRADE DEADLINE…………… The Cubs made a huge trade at the deadline getting allstar RF Gary Weedman(.295,15,52) from the Braves for their closer S.Bailey. The Cubs will move 31yr old set-up man Matthew Curtiss who had 17 saves last year for the Cubs back into that role. The Reds traded SP Randy Gordon(9-6, 5.41) who has been the ace of the staff for 5 years to the Angels for Larry Cammarata(11-5, 3.42) who also threw a no-hitter this year. The Mets sent powerful 3B Raymond Tatham(.250,19,65) to the Dodgers for LF Rubin Rudy(.242,10,54,27sb). The Orioles didn’t stand on their laurels as they ship SP Paul Sanmiguel to the Red Sox for Gold glove Cfer Richard Stowell(.278,6,34,20sb). Stowell takes over in CF for last years World Series MVP C. Sarvis(.238,6,26) who had been struggling. PENNANT RACE SUMMARY……….. SEPTEMBER 1, 1904 Baltimore saw a 7 game lead dwindle to a 1.5 game lead over the Tigers, Cleveland(2) and Oakland(4) are still hanging around. In the NL, Cincinnati continues to hold off the Pirates(2.5). While the Cubs and Phillies are only 4 back. PENNANT SUMMARY END OF SEPTEMBER 1904.….. The Orioles won 8 straight to end the month and clinched their 3rd straight pennant. In the NL, the Reds holding on to a ½ game lead over the Pirates, will head to New York for 3 games against the Mets while the Pirates are at home for 2 against the Giants. Here is how it played out……. On October 2nd, the Pirates played an afternoon game and sent 25yr old Thomas Bock(14-9, 3.32) to the mound against Henry Amundson(9-19, 3.65). Amundson if you remember won 2 games for the Orioles in the 1902 World Series but this year is trying not to be a 20-game loser. Bock is a reliever turned starter and has done very well. On this day it was all Pirates as G.Frasure showed why he is a 2-time MVP going 3 for 5, driving in 4 runs as the Pirates win 10 to 4. And yes Amundson lost his 20th. The Pirates have now won 6 straight. On the night of the 2nd, the Reds jumped all over Mets starter William Potts(11-11, 4.73) and won 12 to 7 to stay ½ game up on the Pirates. On October 3rd, the Pirates had a day off and the Mets turned the table on the Reds in a slugfest 11 to 9. As we go into the final day of the season here are the pitching matchups: Cincinnati- R.Squire(20-5) vs. K.Drake (13-13, 4.09) Pittsburgh- R.Stevens(16-12, 4.12) vs. San Francisco- Roy Bridgeman(14-8, 3.15) Pirate catcher Steven Michalski(.209.22,68) hit a 3-run homer in the 2nd and 5 Giant pitchers made it stand up in a 4 to 3 win. While in New York, Keith Drake shutout the Reds for 8 innings and then hung on for a 4 to 2 win. So both the Pirates and the Reds lose and we have a one game playoff on October 5th. ONE GAME PLAYOFF PITS 2 TEAMS THAT WON 97 GAMES……… Cincinnati sent its hard throwing strikeout pitcher Kenneth Urbanek(15-10, 3.15). Urbanek is the only pitcher in the league to K 300 hitters in a season which happened last year. He struck out 254 in 237 innings this year. Pittsburgh countered with finesse pitcher Christian Hibner(13-11, 4.33). Chris was an 18 game winner last year and also went 1-1 in last years World Series so pressure isn’t new to him. Hibner and the Pirates took a 3-0 lead into the 7th when Adrian Dillman who had entered as a replacement catcher hit’s a 2-run homer to cut the lead to 3 to 2. In the top of the 8th, Fred “Craps” Eastland(.314,21,103) hit another 2-run shot off Hibner and the Reds win 4 to 3. Not all is well in Cincy however as K.Urbanek did leave the deciding game in the 3rd with elbow trouble and is questionable for the Series. WORLD SERIES PREVIEW…………….. The 2-time defending World Series champs look very similar this year as they are very balanced with the 2nd best pitching and the 3rd best hitting in baseball. The Orioles will send Jamel Trimm(17-10, 2.49) who at 25yrs old is turning into one of the leagues best, also in the starting rotation will be Donnie Desousa(15-9, 3.05) who went 7 strong innings last year in his only Series start. In the #3 slot will be 35yr old Austin Johnson(16-12, 4.47). Austin was the ace of the staff the first two years but now is just an important piece. Johnson is 2-2 in 4 World Series starts. Timm pitched as a 23yr old reliever in 1902’s Series and went 1-0 in 2 starts with a 2.65 era last year. Hitting wise the Orioles again have the usual case but even better. Matty McIntyre(.306,54,131) joined C.LaChance of the Yankees as the only players to hit 50+ homers in a season. Robert Imes(.322,37,117) joins Mac as the most feared combo in baseball. Cincinnati has the pitching, finishing just ahead of the Orioles as the 2nd best but their hitting finished 7th. The Reds finally got off 3 straight 2nd place finishes thanks to pitching. Robert Squier(20-6, 3.00) was tremendous including throwing a no-hitter in June. Kenneth Urbanek will be pitching with a sore elbow, we will have to see how effective he is. And in the #3 spot, Sylvester Allen(16-8, 2.89) who went 0-2 back in the 1900 Series on a losing KC Royals team. The hitting still has 1B Timothy Setliff(.338,36,100) and RF Fred Eastland(.314,21,103) but it has been better. Prediction: Orioles win their 3rd straight Series in 6 games. BALTIMORE 0.……………CINCINNATI 5 Robert Squire pitches a 5-hit shutout, striking out 10. BALTIMORE 2.……………CINCINNATI 10 1B Timothy Setliff hit his 2 and 3 homers of the Series as the Reds roll. A sore armed Kenneth Urbanek pitched into the 8th and got the win for his gutsy performance. As the Series switches over to Baltimore, people all over have to be thinking what is with the Orioles. CINCINNATI 7.……………..BALTIMORE 8 The Orioles jumped out to a quick lead, running S.Allen in the 5th after he had given up 7 runs. But old war horse A.Johnson fared no better giving up 7 runs , 5 earned in just 6.2 innings. The O’s scratched out a run in the bottom of the 7th to hang on for the win. Setliff unbelievably hit his 4th homer in the Series and already has 9 Rbi. CINCINNATI 1.…………….BALTIMORE 7 This time it was Trimm who dominated, going the distance and striking out 10. Squier also went the distance but gave up 7 runs. SS Robert Reder was the hitting hero going 3 for 4 and driving in 4 with 2 homers. Reder’s output was a surprise in that the most homeruns he has hit in a season is 7 back in 1902. CINCINNATI 9.…………….BALTIMORE 8 In a slugfest, the Reds hold on to go up 3 games to 2. Urbanek struggled as did D.Desousa both giving up 5 runs thru 6.2 innings. The Reds catcher K.Kuffrey was the player of the game hitting the 1st grand slam in Series history. As we go back to Cincy, T.Setliff has 11 Rbi in the Series. Baltimore manager says he still likes his chances. BALTIMORE 6.…………….CINCINNATI 5 Matty McIntyre’s bat finally woke up as his 2nd homer of the day was with 1 out in the top of the 9th to give the Orioles the lead. T.Setliff is the talk of baseball however as he hit his 5th homerun of the Series and now also has 12 rbi. On a side note, S.Allen the Reds starting pitcher was hit by a line drive in the 3rd and left with a broken wrist. BALTIMORE 3……………..CINCINNATI 4 Game 7 shaped up to be the 3rd matchup between Jamel Tripp and Robert Squier. Both pitchers are as good as you can get. We went 5 ½ scoreless when Orioles starter J.Tripp bobbles Reds pitcher Squiers grounder to start the 6th. A one out single by 2B Delbert Salazar sent Squiers to 3rd and up to the plate came T.Setliff. After fouling several pitches off on a full count he ripps one to right field that Matty McIntyre makes a diving catch of at the track. Squier tags up however and the Reds break the scoreless tie. The Reds added 2 in the 7th to lead 3-0 before Matthew Enlow broke up the shutout with a 2-run homer for the Orioles making it 3 to 2. Each team was able to add a run from there but the Reds win 4 to 3. NOTES…………………… Timothy Setliff had a great series hitting .397 with 5 homers and 13 Rbi. Easily the greatest postseason performance to date. He was named the Series MVP. AWARD WINNERS…………….1904 AL CY YOUNG Bill Clayton(OAK) (22-8, 2.81) NL CY YOUNG Brett Millsaps(CHN) (25-5, 2.22) AL MVP Matty McIntyre(BAL) (.306,54,131) NL MVP Gerald Frasure(Pit)- (.343,43,122)--- Wins his 3rd straight. This year he hit .361 with 17 homers at the AAA level before getting the call up. He hit .263 in 95 at-bats for the A’s William Donovan of the Tigers is considered the best pitching prospect. Donaovan went 13-9 with a 3.52 era at AA this year. He went 15-6 with a 2.47 era last year at A ball. 31yr old SS Edwin Stamant became the 1st player in league history to steal 300 bases and finished the season with 301. He has played his whole career for the Pirates and had a major league record 68 steal in 1901. The Dodgers announced today that they have fired Tommy Lasorda. Lasorda had a career 370-440 record in 5 years with the Dodgers. Their last place finish was the last straw. They have replaced him with Walter Alston. The Giants also fired Dusty Baker today. Baker’s best finish was his first year 1900 when the Giants finished with an 81-81 record and in 4th. Baker leaves the Giants with a 384-426 career record. Frank Robinson will be the new manager. Back to back last place finishes cost Don Baylor his job with the Angels. After finishing 84-78 and in 3rd in 1902, the Angels have went a combined 138-186 the last 2 years. Baylors career record is 385-425. The Royals let 2-time Manager of the Year Fred Patek go after 3 straight 9th place finishes. Patek guided the Royals to the AL pennant in 1900 winning 92 games and won his 1st MOY award. In 1901 they finished 3rd but with all the injuries the Royals suffered won his 2nd MOY award. Patek’s career record with the Royals was 399-412. Just 2 months after being let go by the Royals, Fred Patek has been named the manager for the California Angels. The Royals took Alan Trammell who has spent 5 years managing the Detroit Tigers. Next up 1905................................ |

1905 SEASON PREVIEW………………………..
BALTIMORE- 3 Straight AL Pennants, 2 World Series all in the last 3 years and we are picking them again. J.Trimm(17-10, 2.49) and D.Desousa(15-9, 3.05) are back along with highly thought of prospect Don Roberts(9-9, 4.91) who is just 24. 36yr old Austin Johnson(16-12, 4.47) is still hanging around as the #4 starter. 3B M.Enow(.312,21,80), LF R.Imes(.322,37,117) and RF M.McIntyre(.306,54,131) are back to fuel a good offense……Prediction 1st DETROIT- F.Jakes(15-11, 4.01) is the ace but don’t expect K.Yoder(19-10, 4.04) to duplicate last years numbers. J. Obrien(.318,35,95) can still carry an offense and he may have to. 1B G.Leiva(.337,20,106) need to repeat his numbers for the Tigers not to fall. Prediction 2nd NEW YORK(A)- D.Leedom(17-11, 3.11) will lead a better than average staff. C.LaChance(.293,55,122), B. Stockstill(.312,24,87), R. Loflin(.306,37,108) and M.Dolin(.298,22,78) make the Yankees a contender….Predict 3rd. MINNESOTA- J.Braziel(21-7, 2.81) had a great year. Long time Twins ace T.Saad(5-15, 5.22) will go to the bullpen at age 37. K.Longshore(.277,20,77) and C.Victoino(.286,22,77) aren’t what they used to be. Predict 4th BOSTON- Look for Boston to move up with better than average pitching. Predict 5th CHICAGO(A)- J. Madrigal(20-11, 2.99) probably isn’t the pitcher that won 2 Cy Youngs but he is pretty good. D.Robertson(.354,16,94) won the batting title. K.Pugsley(.327,20,77) is still good. Watch for 25yr old R.Thomas(.250,16,47) to blossom this year. Predict 6th OAKLAND- B.Clayton(22-8, 2.81) was the CY winner and leads a pretty good staff. However they hit just .249 as a team. J.Kerney(.273,33,105) is getting better, but H.Risk(.315,8,85) and J.Nardi(.283,23,66) are not. Nardi is 39. Predict 7th CLEVELAND- J.Bahr(15-11, 3.71) won the Cy in 1903 and M.Hawley(13-12, 3.75) is a great prospect. 1B D.Cogdell(.349,39,119) was the MVP in 1903...Predict 8th KANSAS CITY- G.Carrick(.312,25,67) is a good player……..Predict 9th CALIFORNIA- R.Gordon(13-10, 4.85) and J.Barreto(13-16, .407) need to have big years and W.Burford need to come back healthy from a major back injury then with the worst hitting team in the league, they still finish last..Predict 10th. NATIONAL LEAGUE……… R.Squier(20-6, 3.00), K.Rubanek(15-10, 3.22) and S.Allen(16-8, 2.89) give the maybe the best staff in baseball and their 3.51 team era was the best in either league last year. World Series MVP T.Setliff(.338,36,100) and F.Eastland(.314,21,103) should score just enough for the Reds to repeat…Predict 1st PITTSBURGH- H. Ferrer(11-6, 3.46) is the ace this year but the pitching is good but not as good as last year. G.Frasure(.343,43,122) is one of the best in the league and has 3 straight MVP to prove it. Speed demon E.Stamant(.326,4,47,59sb) and CF H.Hairston(.308,35,121) make this the best offense in baseball. Last year they hit.272 as a team…. Predict 2nd CHICAGO(N)- B. Millsaps(25-5, 2.22) was the Cy winner, and W.Berkowitz(16-9, 3.39) is also very good. The big 3 again are C N.Dodson(.314,14,60), 2B R.Salter(.299,30,97) and 3B A.Sabb(.278,42,99). Predict 3rd HOUSTON- Astros move up thanks to the pitching staff of J.Castellano(19-8, 2.53), J.Johnson(9-12. 3.07) and A.Middleton(16-14, 3.45). They may be as good as the Cincy rotation. They also got AL ROY SS T.Roberson(.359,22,64) from the Twins last year and he along with C prospect J.Kling(.259,5,41) they will be better at the plate also…Predict 4th NEW YORK(N)- W.Potts(11-11, 4.73) is 35yrs old and the staff that won in 1900 doesn’t look the same. Former MVP B.Townley(.325,35,93) can still produce. The Mets will give prospects C W.Seibert(.289,3,36) and 3B R.Vinton(.300,12,69) full time jobs this year….Predict 5th PHILADELPHIA- J.Dixon(18-7, 3.81) is still the only pitcher they have. And the hitting will be down also…Predict 6th SAN FRANSISCO- The Giants feel R.Bridgeman(14-8, 3.15) is ready to be an ace. C.Layfield(14-5, 2.84) and E.Kemmer(6-3, 2.62) give them one of the 3 best staffs in the league. However T.Swatzell(.315,26,69) again is the only bat in the lineup..Predict 7th ATLANTA- Swordfish Davidson(12-9, 3.36) is back after missing almost 2 months last year. But the Braves hit just .243 last year…Predict 8th ST.LOUIS- M.Richards(13-13, 3.37) and A.Bradford(5-10, 3.46) make the staff better than last year. C M.McCreary(.323,23,81) may be the best catcher in baseball. Prospect SS W.Little should be followed. 1B B. Long(.257,21,78) could be traded again soon as J.Beckley a big prospect may be about ready….Predict 9th LOS ANGELES- W.Weems(6-15, 4.60) is nothing like the pitcher he once was. Watch prospect B.Lister(6-8, 3.72) he could be a good one….Predict 10th 1905 ALLSTAR BREAK REVIEW……………. The Orioles are again sitting atop the AL standings. Kansas City, picked to finish 9th are a surprise only 1.5 games back along with the Twins. Baltimore’s pitching again is the boss, supporting a 3.26 era which is ½ point lower than anyone else. Detroit has been the biggest disappointment thanks to a league worst 4.66 era. Pittsburgh and Cincy are again fighting it out with the Pirates holding a 1 game lead. St.Louis is 4.5 back and the Cubs just 5. Its Pittsburgh with the best hitting in baseball (.274) against the Reds 3.34 ERA which is 2nd to only the Orioles. If the Cards start hitting, they will be right there also. Oakland landed 1903 Cy winner James Bahr from Cleveland after Bill Clayton was hurt. When they are both healthy, they will have a nice 1-2 combo. Oakland is just 5 back and Clayton only has a week left to recover. ALLSTAR GAME 1905.……………… Starting pitchers for this years AS game will be Robert Squier(12-7, 2.75) of the Reds. Squier won 20 games for the World Champs last year. For the AL, Orioles ace Jamel Trimm(10-5, 3.41) gets the assignment. Matty McIntyre’s 2-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning gives the AL the victory. The homer which came with 2-out came off Braves 23yr old reliever Tom Cutler who has a 1.11 era during the season. McIntyre was awarded the games MVP. The Yankees young and talented Mike Donlin, B.Stockstill and Candy LaChance hit 1-2-3 for the AL lineup this year. They are 1-2-3 in the league in hitting and Stockstill and LaChance are 1-2 in the league in homers. They are also 1-2-3 in the league in RBI. Think they will be any good in the future? TRADE DEADLINE……………………. Oakland wins 9 in a row to finish out the month of July and are within ½ game of the Orioles. Minnesota is 2.5 back. Yankees and Detroit have fallen out of the race. Oakland did what we thought and became a beast once Clayton and Bahr were in the same rotation. Pittsburgh has expanded its lead to 5 games over the Cubs who have moved past the Reds who are tied with St.Louis 6.5 back. The Mets who are all but out of the race, picked up a #1 pitcher from the Cards for 3B prospect Roland Vinton(.280,11,54). Vinton is just 23 and should eventually hit for average and power. Baltimore is search of someone to play SS instead of Gaston Redwine(.182,8,22) dealt their 2-time Rolaids winning closer Delbert Earnshaw (9sv, 3.28)to the Phillies for 22yr old SS Michael West(.253,13,42). The Orioles felt that Christopher Koski(8sv, 1.93) could step right into the closer role. PENNANT FEVER……………….. Just when you thought Oakland might be the new big dog on the block, Baltimore goes 24-7 in August to take a 6.5 game lead. The pitching of AS game starter J.Timm(17-7, 2.91) and 24yr old D.Roberts(17-2, 2.15) have been just as good as Oakland’s big 2, J.Bahr(16-10, 2.23) and B.Clayton(13-6, 3.52). Cincy won 11 in a row in August to get within ½ game of the Pirates but when the smoke cleared the Pirates were still up 3 games headed into September. Going into the last series of the year, the Pirates had clinched their 2nd Pennant in 3 years but the Reds hung close till the end. In the AL, Baltimore leads by 2 games over Oakland with 3 to play. Oakland is at home entertaining the last place Angels, the Orioles will be trying to shut down the powerful Bronx Bomers who are 2nd in the league in scoring but 16th in runs allowed. Baltimore clinched at least a tie in the first game as R.Imes hit his 44th homer and D.Desousa won his 18th game in a 4 to 3 win. The A’s Pennant hopes died when “The Big Cat” Burford threw a complete game 3-hitter at Oakland in a 3 to 1 final score. One of Oakland’s big two B.Clayton(17-7) took the loss. So it will be the Orioles and Pirates in a replay of the 1903 Series…. WORLD SERIES PREVIEW…………. Baltimore is making their 4 straight trip to the World Series and have a chance to win their 3rd. The Orioles won a record 105 games and along with Oakland(100) became the first time 2 teams in the same league have won 100 games. Pitching was only part of the Orioles success as they were 4th with 619 runs allowed while the offense was 2nd with 775 runs scored. The Orioles however will be without two of their top 4 starting pitchers as Jamel Trimm(19-7, 2.85) and Austin Johnson(11-11, 3.95) will miss the Series. That leaves Don Roberts(21-4, 2.63), Donnie Desousa(18-6, 2.52) and probably Alton Lepley(4-7, 4.98) who had been a spot starter. The Offense however will be there in full force led by outfielders Robert Imes(.279,44,121) and Matty McIntyre(.286,42,115). 22yr old C Patrick Lenahan(.315,27,85) and 3B Matthew Enlow(.306,29,82) contributed. The Pirates were the best hitting team in baseball with a .280 team average and 838 runs scored both best in either league. Perenial MVP candidate Gerald Frasure(.337,41,120) leads the way with Jack “The Radar” Koons(.306,22,110) and CF Herman Hairston(.311,23,95) playing great 2nd fiddle. Pitching wise the Pirates are similar to the Orioles in that Christian Hibner(5-1, 3.33) was lost in June for the season and former CY winner Robert Stevens(1-2, 4.24) was lost in May. The Pirates will go with Herman Ferrer(21-5, 2.84), Thomas Bock(16-9, 3.36) and 25yr old rookie Gregg Dupre(9-7, 2.80). It could boil down to which #3 starter does the job…….Look for the Orioles to win their 3rd World Series title in 6 games. PITTSBURGH 2.………………BALTIMORE 4 Desousa went 8 strong innings despite a 48 minute rain delay in the 2nd inning as the O’s win game one. PITTSBURGH 5.………………BALTIMORE 0 21-game winner Ferrer evened the series with a 4-hit shutout. G.Frasure went 1 for 3 with a homer and 3 RBI for the Pirates. BALTIMORE 3.……………….PITTSBURGH 4 Neither #3 starter Dupre or Lepley got a decision and the Pirates scored with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th off Baltimore closer C.Koski for the win. Is the trade of former closer Delbert Earnshaw going to haunt the Orioles? BALTIMORE 2.……………….PITTSBURGH 3 Seldom used LF James Feuerstein hit a pinch hit 2-run homer in the bottom of the 7th to make a winner out of Thomas Bock as the Pirates take a 3 games to 1 lead. BALTIMORE 6.……………….PITTSBURGH 2 In a rematch of 20-game winners, Roberts went 8 innings giving up 2 runs to beat Ferrer the winner in game 2. PITTSBURGH 8.………………BALTIMORE 9 After the Pirates catcher Alan Henton hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 8th to give the Pirates a 8 to 6 lead, the Orioles scored three of their own with the help of a 2-run homer by Matty McIntyre. C.Koski pitched a scoreless 9th for the save. Dupre and Lepley both showed why they were fill ins, giving up 5 and 6 runs respectively. PITTSBURGH 4.………………BALTIMORE 7 Robert Imes homered and drove in 4 runs while Matty McIntyre hit his 3rd homer of the Series and drove in 3 runs as the Orioles won their 3rd World Series title in four years. Donnie Desousa went 8 innings to get his 2nd win of the Series. NOTES……………………….. Robert Imes and Matty McIntyre combined for 6 homers and 17 rbi. McIntyre hit .333 to Imes’s .250 to win the MVP of the World Series. McIntyre has now hit 10 homers in 26 World Series games and has won 2 Series MVP awards. He officially becomes MR. OCTOBER. Don’t forget Matty is just 25yrs old. AWARD WINNERS………………. AL CY YOUNG JOESPH MUTCH(OAK) (22-7, 2.44).. Only 24yrs old. NL BY YOUNG ROBERT SQUIER(CIN) (25-11, 2.48).. Set record for wins. Atlanta’s 18yr old 2B Neil Chiodo is considered the best prospect in baseball. Chiodo was the 3rd overall pick this year and hit .350 in AAA before being call up to the Braves where he hit .276 in 87 at-bats. William “Wild Bill” Donovan a 19yr old Detroit Tiger starting pitcher went 13-8 with a 3.98 era in AA this year and is considered the best pitching prospect in baseball. The Braves announced they would be firing Davey Johnson as their manager. HenryAaron was given the thank less job of rebuilding the Braves and will be their 3rd manager in 7 years. Johnson lasted just 2 years finishing 9th and 10th and had a record of 135-189. The Indians fired their manager Mike Hargrove at season’s end replacing him with Chuck Hinton. Hargrove was the only manager the Indians have had going 463-509. He had 2 years with a winning record but never finished above 3rd. The Red Sox have finally had enough of Ralph Houk and let him go after a 6yr record of 466-506. Houk’s team finished 8th last year and in last this year. His best finish was in 1901 when the Red Sox were 84-78 and finished 4th. |

1906 SEASON PREVIEW……………………..
The Baltimore Orioles will go down as one of the best teams to ever play and they are favored again. J.Trimm(19-7, 2.85), D.Desousa(18-6, 2.52) and D.Roberts(21-4, 2.63) are back as the winningest team ever. C P.Lenahan(.315,27,85), 3B M.Enlow(.306,29,82), LF R.Imes(.279,44,121) and 1904 MVP M.McIntyre(.286,42,115) are also ready for another year…Predict 1st again. OAKLAND- Believe it or not, the A’s actually have a better pitching staff then the Orioles. The best staff in baseball is lead by Cy winner J.Mutch(22-7, 2.44). Former CY winners J.Bahr(21-11, 2.27) and B.Clayton(17-7, 3.47) also will be back. LF J.Kerney(.288,49,106) is quickly becoming one of the better hitters in baseball. Ex-Oriole backup catcher George Perkins(.286,28,93) is also ready to blossom…Predict 2nd. MINNESOTA- J.Braziel(19-9, 3.56) will have a tough time repeating his 1905 season. C K.Longshore(.274,25,82) is 35 and past his prime. RF C.Victorino(.328,21,79) cant do it alone..Predict 3rd DETROIT- Manager Willie Horton will have to keep working miracles for them to win. Pitching looks like it will be a problem. J.Obrien(.288,30,90) is still the leader of the offense but he is 39. Predict 4th…… CHICAGO(A)- Lack of pitching will be the problem here also. CF K.Pugsley(.310,14,46) can still hit some but he is 35... Predict 5th NEW YORK(A)- R.Clore(19-8, 3.62) probably wont repeat his year. The Yankees have great hitters in 1B C.LaChance(.363,43,95), 3B B.Stockstill(.332,44,135) and CF M.Dolin(.318,22,93) but the rest is below average…Predict 6th CALIFORNIA-Nap Lajoie(.245,11,39) is a former #1 prospect that is now 26 and needs to step up but rumor has it that last years torn groin muscle could almost ruin his career.… Predict 7th KANSAS CITY- Actually has a pretty good pitching staff led by K.Petrone(17-11, 3.25). Garland Carrick(.255,21,66) saw his numbers drop…Predict 8th CLEVELAND- W.Smith(17-13, 3.53) pitched well last year but the Indians have pitching and hitting problems. 1B D.Cogdell(.317,29,89) may have to carry the offense by itself….Predict 9th BOSTON- Red Sox have the worst pitching in baseball so will give 25yr old Albert Saterfiel(4-9, 5.14) the #4 spot in the rotation and hope he explodes on the diamond. No hitting either makes them the worst team in baseball. NATIONAL LEAGUE……… CHICAGO(N)- 1904 Cy winner B.Millsaps(15-13, 2.75) and A.McCoy(14-10, 2.98) will keep them near the top. 3B A.Sabb(.278,44,109) and RF G.Weedman(.313,30,81) will be the load carriers this year. N.Dodson(.309,15,61) and 2B R.Salter(.269,16,63) are 32 and 36 yrs old and are slowing down some….Predict 1st. PITTSBURGH- H.Ferrer(21-5, 2.84) and T.Bock(16-9, 3.36) still give them one of the best pitching staffs. 4-time MVP G.Frasure(.337,41,120), SS blazer E.Stamant(.307,14,47) and CF H.Hairston(.311,23,110) give them good hitting also…Predict 2nd ST.LOUIS- A.Bradford(13-15, 3.03) is becoming a very good pitcher. C M.McCreary(.299,15,56) is still very good…Predict 3rd CINCINNATI- Look for the Reds to slip some. R.Squier(25-11, 2.48) is coming off a Cy Young year. L.Cammarata(10-9, 3.13) is also good. K.Rubanek(10-13, 3.19) will continue to strikeout people. 1B T.Setliff(.278,42,105) and RF F.Eastland(.283,23,95) still have the gas that runs the car. But SS J.Bryan(.300,7,35) might have found a team that wants him….Predict 4th LOS ANGELES- W.Weems(14-11, 2.92) bounced back and had a good year and the Dodgers pitching is overall better. But hitting is awful young relying on 24yr old R.Conover(.270,22,64) and 22yr old J.Sheckard(.263,5,51). D.Yeldell(.340,13,71) won his 2nd batting title last year….Prediction 5th HOUSTON- J.Castellano(16-12, 3.01), J.Johnson(12-7, 2.810 and A.Middleton(17-10, 3.02) give the Astros a good pitching staff but hitting is the problem. SS T.Roberson(.301,21,71) will get to learn from 38yr old 3B Raymond Tatham(.220,12,39) who had some good years for the Mets…..Predict 6th SAN FRANSICO- This should be R.Bridgeman’s(15-16, 2.58) year. T.Swatzell(.295,13,33) will be back after bone chips ended his year in early June last year….Predict 7th NEW YORK(N)- 2-time allstar William Potts(7-13, 4.26) is now 36. CF B.Townley(.297,28,71,39sb) a former MVP will be asked to carry this offense….Prediect 8th PHILADELPHIA- With the 2nd worst staff in baseball and no hitting…Predict 9th ATLANTA- With no pitching or hitting, it will be a long year for new manager Hank Aaron….Predict 10th 1906 ALLSTAR BREAK SUMMARY………………. At the break, it is the pitching of Oakland, led by last years Cy winner J.Mutch(14-2, 3.01) that has them with a 1 game lead over the best hitting team in the AL Baltimore. New York is just 2 games back as they are getting some pitching to go with there hitting this year. Minnesota is 4th at 5.5 games back. Detroit has been the biggest disappointment, setting in 7th and already 18.5 games out. In the NL, Chicago which was picked as an upset winner at the start of the year by this sportswriter has a 1.5 game lead over the Reds. Houston is a surprise at 44-37 and is 5.5 games back while defending champion Pittsburgh is 6 back. ALLSTAR GAME 1906.……………………………. The AL will start 1905 Cy winner Joesph Mutch(14-2, 3.01) of the Oakland A’s. This is Mutch’s 1st allstar game coming off a 22-7 season last year and is just 24yrs old. The NL counters with 3-time allstar and their Cy winner from last year Robert Squier(10-3, 2.14) of the Reds. Squire is a 2-time 20 game winner and went 25-11 last year. The AL scored 13 runs on 17 hits and blew out the NL by a score of 13 to 2. 4-time allstar shortstop Brian Bramblett(.285,14,44) went 3 for 5 with a homer and 4 rbi. The Angels shortstop was also named the games’s MVP. NEWS AND NOTES……………………. The Philadelphia Phillies, already 17 games back, have been rumored to be shopping 24yr old allstar outfielder Kenneth McCarthy. McCarthy(.307,11,42) was the ROY in 1903 and was the starting LF for the National League allstars this year. He should interest many teams in the next couple weeks as the trade deadline nears. TRADE DEADLINE COMES AND GOES………………… It was the Angels who won the sweepstakes for Kenneth McCarthy, sending them 19yr old starting pitcher Arthur Whisler(8-2, 3.27 in AA) who scouts feel will develop into a decent #3 or #4 starter. They also got SS Joseph Bender who was the #3 pick in this years draft. According to scouts, Bender is a huge prospect and will be a star in the future with a shot at greatness. The Phillies didn’t hold on to Bender long, sending him to the Giants for starting pitcher James King. King is said to have above average stuff and good enough to be in the upper part of most rotations. The Philadelphia papers are screaming for managements heads over the outcome of the McCarthy trade. Pittsburgh sent a piece of its pennant winning teams to KC. SP Thomas Bock was part of a 3-way deal with the Royals and Cubs as the Pirates get 22yr old Eddie Plank. Plank was the 1st round pick of the Royals last year and will step right in as the #2 starter for the Pirates taking Bock’s spot. Bock(7-8, 3.97) was an allstar for the Pirates last year when he won 16 games. St.Louis made its decision on its 1B, keeping 32yr old Bill Long who has 184 homers in his career and trading big prospect Jake Beckley to the Angels. CF Alex May who hit 30 homers last year went to the Cards and broke his hip the first day there and will miss 9 weeks. Beckley will get a chance to play everyday at age 19 after being the #2 pick overall in 1904. Houston traded one of its big 3 pitchers Adam Middleton to Philadelphia for another pitcher James Dixon. Middleton had been rumored to be a disruption in the clubhouse and had to be dumped. Dixon was an allstar back in 1904 for the Phillies but is out for the year with an elbow injury. Middleton(10-7, 3.99) had been a 3-time allstar in his 7 years with the Astros but is 35yrs old. He steps in as the Phillies #1 starter. PENNANT RACES……….SEPTEMBER 1, 1906 It is a 3 way race in the AL with Baltimore regaining it old familiar spot on top of the league. Oakland is 1.5 games back and the surprising Yankees just 3 back. In the NL, Pittsburgh looks to have fallen out of the race by going 14-14 in August including losing their last 6 in a row and are now 8.5 back. The Reds won their last 7 games of August and now lead the Cubs by a game. PENNANT SUMMARY……………. Baltimore used a 9 game win streak to go 17-11 in the next 28 games to keep its lead at 2 games over Oakland with 3 to play. The Yankees faltered going 13-14 in September. Someone needs to give the schedule maker a raise as Baltimore goes to Oakland for the final series of the year. The A’s need a sweep to unseat the Orioles dynasty. The Cubs picked up a game on the Reds in September and both teams stand at 94-65 with 3 games to go. Los Angeles(81-78) will visit Cincy for the last 3 games while is at Pittsburgh(88-71). The schedule favors the Reds. 10/2- Baltimore(D.Desousa- 19-3, 3.50) vs. Oakland (Greg Bibeau- 11-3, 4.42) Baltimore’s Robert Imes hit his 40th homer and Matty McIntyre hit his 52nd as the Orioles ended the suspense with a 8 to 7 win in the first game of the series. It is Baltimore’s 5th straight AL pennant. 10/2- Chicago @ Pittsburgh……….. The Pirates H.Ferrer won his 20th game and shutout the Cubs 3-0. Ferrer was dominate in allowing only a leadoff single by 2B R.Salter in the 1st inning. 10/2- Los Angeles @ Cincinnati………… The Reds take a 1 game lead with a 7-2 win. Pitcher Larry “Goose” Cammarata went the distance for his 16th win. 10/3- Chicago @ Pittsburgh The Cubs bounced back with 13 hits and 10 runs in a 10-3 shellacking. 22yr old Eddie Plank(10-9) took the loss for the Pirates. 10/3- Los Angeles @ Cincinnati The Dodgers scored 4 runs in the top of the 10th with 3 of the runs coming on D.Yeldell’s 3-run homer as the Dodgers help out the Cubs with a 7-3 win over the Reds. The Reds and Cubs are again all tied with 1 game to play. 10/4- Chicago @ Pittsburgh The Cubs went with Thomas Bock(15-12, 3.63) who had come over from Pittsburgh in July and his old teammates gave his a rude welcome scoring 8 runs, 6 earned of Bock in 2 innings as the Pirates win 10-8. On a side note, Pirates 4-time MVP Gerald Frasure didn’t play in the game after being beaned in the head in yesterday’s game. Frasure missed 32 games this year with injuries but still managed to hit 33 homers. 10/4 - Los Angeles @ Cincinnati With a chance to win the pennant on the final day of the season, the Reds sent their ace Robert Squier(16-10, 3.17) to the mound to face the Dodgers Paul Nadler(13-8, 4.27) who had no-hit the Braves back on June 29. It was over early as the Reds hit 3 homers and scored 7 runs in the first 4 innings and went on to win 8-2. Squier went the distance striking out 10 for his 17th win. WORLD SERIES PREVIEW…..BALTIMORE (101-61) VS CINCINNATI (96-66) What more can be said about the Orioles, their 5th straight trip to the fall classic and a team who has averaged over 100 wins a season for those same 5 years. They are led by an offense that hit .277 and scored 835 runs. Both tops in the Majors. The big bats in the lineup are again C P.Lenahan(.303,31,89), 3B M.Enlow(.331,26,93), LF R.Imes(.334,40,113) and Mr.October Matty McIntyre(.282,52,131). The Pitching staff looks the same as last year as Jamel Trimm(18-11, 3.64), Don Roberts(16-10, 3.00) and Donnie Desousa(20-3, 3.47). Desousa, great numbers for a #3 starter!!! Cincinnati will try to stop the Orioles domination with pitching as their 3.33 team era and their 602 runs allowed were both the best in either league. And when you say Cincy and pitching in the same breath you think of 3-time allstar and 1905 Cy winner Rober Squier(17-10, 3.13). Squier will be followed to the mound by John Rowenow(14-12, 3.08) and “Goose” Cammarata(16-11, 3.00). On offense the Reds will rely on 2 familiar faces from the team that beat Baltimore in the 1904 series. Timothy Setliff(.335,34,102) and “Craps” Eastland(.300,25,90). If you remember, Setliff hit 5 homers and drove in 13 runs in being named the MVP of the 1904 Series. BALTIIMORE 5.……………………CINCINNATI 6 In what started out as a pitching duel, the Reds scraped a run together in the 3rd off Roberts and lead 1-0 behind the pitching of Rosenow. The Orioles however scored 3 runs in the top of the 8th only to see the Reds score 4 in their half of the inning. The “never say die” Orioles however got doubles from backup LF J.Castle and Matty McIntyre to take the lead with 2 in the 9th. But closer Christopher Koski gave up a run in the bottom of the 9th to give the Reds game one. BALTIMORE 2.…………………….CINCINNATI 4 Catcher Kenneth Kuffrey(.271,15,68) hit a 3-run homer as the Reds score 4 runs off Trimm in the 1st . Squier made it hold up going 8.1 innings and giving up 2 runs. NOTES………………. So far Mr. October Matty McIntyre is 3 for 9 with 2 rbi. Reds 1B T.Setliff is just 1 for 4 as the Orioles have walked him 4 times in the first 2 games. CINCINNATI 7.…………………….BALTIMORE 2 Reds break it open with 4 in the top of the 9th off of the Orioles bullpen. Cammarata when 7.2 innings giving up just 2 runs for the win. CINCINNATI 2.……………………..BALTIMORE 6 Orioles keep from being sweep as Don Roberts goes 7 1/3 giving up just 2 un-earned runs. Imes, McIntyre and 1B S.Otte all homered for Baltimore. McIntyre now has his average up to .400 with 2 homers and 7 rbi. Reds starting pitcher John Rosenow left the game in the 2nd inning with back spasms and will likely miss the rest of the Series. CIINCINNATI 3.……………………BALTIMORE 8 Trimm evened things out against R.Squier in a rematch of the game 2 match up. 3B M.Enlow was the player of the game going 2 for 3 with a homer and 2 rbi. BALTIMORE 7.……………………….CINCINNATI 3 Once again back in Cincy the Reds couldn’t put the Orioles away as R.Imes went 2 for 4 with 2 rbi and 3 runs scored and Desousa went 7 innings giving up 3 runs for the win. Reds starter “Goose” Cammarata lasted just 2.2 innings giving up 5 runs. Game 7 will have 25yr old Don Roberts facing John Rosenow. Rosenow will be pitching with a very bad back and some people in the Reds organization have questioned Sparky Anderson decision to use him here in game 7. Many thought Kenneth Urbanek may get a chance to bring his career back to life with a start in game 7. Urbanek if you remember went 18-9 and became the only pitcher to strikeout 300 hitters back in 1903. He has spent much of this year however in the bullpen getting just 15 starts and going 9-5 with a 4.42 era. BALTIMORE 8.………………….CINCINNATI 6 People were right as Reds starter J.Rosenow lasted just 2.1 innings giving up 6 runs as the Orioles win their 4th World Series in 5 years. NOTES…………… Matty McIntyre hit .333 with 2 homers and 10 Rbi and again showed why he is nicknamed Mr. October. McIntyre won his 2nd Series MVP award. The other was in 1902. McIntyre now has a career .339 average with 12 homers and 33 rbi in 33 World Series games. Timothy Setliff ended up going 10 for 24 (.417) with a homer and 6 rbi. But the Orioles pitchers walked him 7 times in the Series. AWARD WINNERS………………….. Candy LaChance of the Yankees and Matty McIntyre are the only hitters to club 50 homers in a season and now both have did it twice. The other being in 1904. Edwin Stamant the speedy SS for the Pirates became the first player to steal 400 bases in a career and finished the season with 422. Stamant holds 7 of the 8 top marks for steals in a year and holds the major league record of 68 set in 1901. Oakland became the first team to win 100 games back to back and not win a pennant. Baltimore has won 105 and 102 in the same years. Chuck Hinton lasted just 1 year as the skipper of the Indians guiding them to a record setting 104 losses. That breaks the mark set by the 1903 Atlanta Braves who lost 103 games. AAA manager Bob Feller was hired as the new manager of the Indians. The Giants let Frank Robinson go after 2 years with a combined record of 136-188. The Giants finished 8th and 10th in his 2 year stint as the manager. Willie Mays was hired to replace Robinson. Alan Trammell lasted just 2 years with the Royals and has now been fired by both the Tigers and the Royals. Trammell had a 138-186 record with the Royals and an overall record of 453-519. Amos Otis was hired to replace Trammell. Larry Bowa was let go by the Phillies today after 2 straight 9th place finishes by the Phils. Bowa had a career record of 557-577 in 7 years, all with the Phillies. Richie Ashburn will leave his job as the GM to take over the job as manager. Bowa had his best years in his first two years as a manager, winning 89 and 87 games and finishing 3rd both season. In a surprise move, the Mets let manager Casey Stengal go today. Stengal won the first ever World Series back in 1900 with the Mets as they went 95-67 and went on the defeat the Royals in 5 games. Stengal has an overall record of 573-561 with one Pennant and one World Series title to his name. The Mets hired Gil Hodges as their new manager. In a sad note, former #1 pick overall of the Tigers “Wild Bill” Donovan announced his retirement with an arm injury. Donovan was drafted by the Tigers in 1903 and made it to the big club this year where he got 8 starts and went 4-1 with a 4.44 era as a 20yr old rookie. Originally doctors felt they could repair the shoulder but after surgery was attempted it was not going to be repairable. RETIRED PLAYERS ………………….. TRENTON SAAB--- Minnesota 1900-1905 Saab won the first ever Cy Young award in the American League going 19-8 with a 2.79 era in 1900. He followed that up with another 19 win season in 1901 and won 16 games in 1903 at age 36. By 1905, the 38yr old Saab had been delegated to the bullpen where he pitched in just 11 games all in relief. Trenton was a 3-time allstar and finished his career with a 72-56 record and a 3.71 era. The question has to be asked, how good could he have been had he not been 33 yrs old when the league started. |

1907 SEASON PREVIEW………………………
OAKLAND- Most feel this is finally the year that Oakland knocks off the Orioles. After winning 100 games the last 2 year and finishing 2nd for the 3rd time in 4 years, the A’s have the best pitching in baseball with 2 time Cy winner J.Mutch(25-5, 2.61), ROY C.Scranton(12-5, 3.01), and former Cy winners J.Bahr(16-11, 3.75) and B.Clayton(10-6, 3.34). On offense they will look to AS C G.Perkins(.289,20,88) and LF J.Kerney(.289,27,84)….Predict 1st BALTIMORE- Pitching is probably not as good as in the past but D.Roberts(16-10, 3.00), J.Trimm(18-11, 3.64) and D. Desousa(20-3, 3.47) will still make them strong. Baseball’s best hitting team is again led by C P.Lenahan(.303,31,89), 3B M.Enlow(.331,26,92), LF R.Imes(.334,40,113) and RF M.McIntyre(.282,52,131)..Predict 2nd NEW YORK(A)- Maybe the 3rd best team in the AL but also maybe the 3rd best team in baseball. J.Billips(22-4, 2.98) and R.Daggett(22-4, 3.61) give them a good 1-2 punch that up until last year the Yankees were missing. MVP C.LaChance(.322,57,128), 3B B.Stockstill(.344,36,111) and CF M.Dolin(.317,31,105) give them as good a three hitters as anybody…Predict 3rd CALIFORNIA- B.Lister(20-9, 2.85) and R.Gordon(13-7, 3.38) will give them some pitching but their hitting is to young to compete with the top 3 in the AL…Predict 4th. MINNESOTA- Lacks pitching and perennial allstar catcher K.Longshore(.266,20,67) is now 36. Ofers J.Nathanson(.335,12,59) and C.Victorino(.307,33,98) should pick up some slack….Predict 5th CHICAGO(A)- No pitching as 2-time Cy winner J.Madrigal hasn’t pitched well since 1904. 3B J.Heideman(.353) won a batting title. LF R.Thomas(.320,33,103) seems to be reaching his peak. K.Pugsley(.334,14,73) may still have a few years in him also. Tony LaRussa‘s job is rumored to be on the line this year.….Predict 6th DETROIT- 35yr old F.Jakes(12-15, 3.75) has seen his better days as the Tigers are in need of pitching. 2B Anthony Lipsey(.339,17,91) led the league in hitting and hits last year but that is about it for the Tigers. 40yr old James Obrien(.239,26,77) who carried this offense for so long is still the starting SS.…..Predict 7th BOSTON- Pitching is solid but nothing spectacular. On offense the Sox are going with youth, giving there LF job to C.Stahl the #1 pick overall last year. And the CF job to “Porky” Steely(.260,9,37). Porky came over from the Phils last year and was the #4 pick overall last year….Predict 8th KANSAS CITY- New manager Amos Otis has pitcher K.Petrone(15-11, 3.00) to build a staff around. Garland Carrick(.296,21,71) however might as well be in the lineup by himself…Predict 9th CLEVELAND- Had the worst pitching in baseball last year and things don’t seem to much better for new manager Bob Feller. As bad as the pitching is, the hitting could be worse. 20yr old SS “Booger” Porter will get the SS job after being drafted #1 in this years draft….Predict 10th National League…………………………. PITTSBURGH- The Pirates, Astros and Reds are all pretty evenly matched. Were picking the Pirates because of reigning Cy winner H.Ferrer(20-7, 2.41). G.Frasure(.312,33,91), SS E.Stamant(.295, 57sb), and J.Koons(.352,10,70) should give the Pirates enough offense…Predict 1st HOUSTON- Pitching is a strength with J.Castellano(18-9, 2.82) becoming as good as anyone. 20yr old K.Wallace(3-2, 3.41), J.Dixon(12-12, 3.48) and J.Johnson(13-13, 3.86) give them 4 solid starters. J.Kling(.325,7,52) looks to becoming a great hitting catcher but hitting is where the Astros will come up short…Predict 2nd CINCINNATI- Had the best staff in either league last year. R.Squier(17-10, 3.13), L.Cammarate(16-10, 3.00) and J.Rosenow(14-12, 3.08) should see that this is again a strongpoint. Reds seem to be missing at least on bat however as 1B T.Setliff(.335,34,102) and RF F.Eastland(.300,25,90) need some help…..Predict 3rd CHICAGO(N)- Back to back 2nd place finishes have the Cubs hungry and the pitching of B.Millsaps(16-8, 3.01) and T.Bock(15-12, 3.63) could get it done. 3B A.Sabb(.267,30,96) and RF G.Weedman(.324,37,93) along with CF B.Langley(.292,30,102) give them just enough hitting….Predict 4th ST.LOUIS- The Cards will ask A.Bradford(16-11, 2.48) and C.Edgerly(19-7, 3.13) to carry pitching load. M.McCreary(.266,12,64) can still hit and should improve…Predict 5th LOS ANGELES- Look for the pitching to stumble as W.Weems(15-12, 2.94) is 35. Hitting wise they have D.Yedell(.335,15,79) who will hit for average, but youngsters R. Conover(.294,11,80) and J.Sheckard(.309,18,74) need to mature in a hurry…Prediect 6th PHILADELPHIA- Pitching is short in Philly. Houston retread A.Middleton(16-11, 3.57) is now 35. Hitting is even worse…Predict 7th ATLANTA- Could be the worst starting staff ever assembled. On offense the Braves are trying to go with youth, giving the starting LF job to Justin Dorgan who hit .307 last year in 218 at-bats and was the #2 pick overall in 1906. Predict 8th NEW YORK(N)- Just average pitching and former MVP B.Townley(.286,18,45) for hitting. Townley missed 59 games last year with a torn rib cage muscle and will need to get back to full form…Predict 9th SAN FRANSICO- R.Bridgeman(16-9, 3.24) is a good pitcher but the bullpen is a mess. 26yr old C W.Selbert(.249,13,60) may finally add some help to 3B T.Swatzell(.333,30,81)….Predict 10th 1907 ALLSTAR BREAK SUMMARY………………………. Despite the Orioles going 15-4 in April, at the allstar break the Yankees(.5) and the Athletics(1.5) were still right in the race. California and Chicago were both just 4.5 games back and still entertaining Pennant hopes. Oakland suffered a severe blow to their pennant hopes when former Cy winner James Bahr decided to retire after a tired arm turned out to be bone chips. The chips had did so much damage that doctors could not repair the muscle. Bahr who was just 31 had won 95 games in his career and won the Cy Young in 1903 with a 19-7 record and a 2.97 era. The Cardinals lead the NL with a 46-34 record. LA is ½ back, Pittsburgh 2 back and the Mets are hanging tough just 3.5 games back. ALLSTAR GAME……………………….. This years Allstar game starting pitchers are Anthony Bradford(10-6, 2.43) of the Cardinals against last years AL ROY Craig Scranton(10-5, 3.25). Scranton has been a breath of fresh air for the Athletics especially since the career ending injury to teammate James Bahr. The AL continued to dominate the Allstar game with a 11-6 win. Yankees CF Mike Dolin went 2 for 5 with 4 rbi while teammate B.Stockstill went 2 for 5 with 4 rbi and 2 runs scored and was named the games MVP. TRADE DEADLINE………………………….. The best get better???? After Baltimore pitching star Don Roberts went down with a broken finger and was told he would miss 7 weeks, the Orioles reached into their bag of tricks and sent 24yr old 2B prospect Jason Tolentino and 24 year old CF prospect Robert Slayton to the Cubs, who are currently in 9th place, for former Cy winner Brett Millsaps(9-10, 3.72). Millsaps is just 31yrs old and will step in as the Orioles #1 starter. SEPTEMBER 1.………………..UPDATE Candy LaChance had taken the Yankees on his shoulders and carried them to a 2.5 game lead over the Orioles. LaChance has 56 homers and needs just 2 homers in the last 31 games to break the old record he set last year of 57. Oakland is also still in the race, 4 games back. Pittsburgh takes over the NL lead but Houston(½), St.Louis(1) and New York(3) are still in it. The defending champion Reds are 67-63 and 7 games back. PENNANT RACE SUMMARY 1907.………….THE WITCH IS DEAD!!!!!! The New York Yankees went 100-62 and ended up ending Baltimore’s 5 year reign atop the American League. The Yankees went 20-7 in September to pull away and won by four games. In the NL, the St.Louis Cardinals won their last 5 games of the season to edge the Houston Astros by 4 games. The Defending NL champs, the Reds, finished 79-83 to finish 21 games out. WORLD SERIES PREVIEW…ST.LOUIS (100-62) VS NEW YORK (100-62) Balanced is how I would describe the Cardinals. Both the hitting and pitching were considered the 3rd best in baseball. Anthony Bradford(21-7, 2.62) is their ace and odds on favorite to win the Cy Young. Last years ROY Christopher Edgerly(18-13, 3.43) will be the #2 starter but in a surprise, manager Lou Brock has chosen John Wooster(6-4, 6.14). Wooster came over from Boston in July and has been a spot starter and went 4-17 last year. On offense, nobody had a great year but C M.McCreary(.275,21,80), 3B Roland Vinton(.313,25,81) and CF R.Kushner(.302,27,96) did just enough. New York was just a little better than the Cardinals in pitching and hitting as the Yankees finished 2nd in the league in both. 24yr old Peter Shoemaker(16-12, 3.39), John Billips(17-7, 3.76) and Ward Pizano(15-11, 3.85) are ready to be the starting pitchers in the series. Randy Daggett(18-6, 3.12) may or may not be ready after missing the last month with rotator cuff injury. The Yankees are known for their hitting. 1B Candy LaChance(294,58,116) could be the best power hitter in the league. 3B B.Stockstill(.327,27,90) and CF M.Dolin(.320,34,114) round out the Yanks perenial allstars. YANKEES WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Peter Shoemaker goes 2-0 and Yankees win in 7 games. Sorry this is short, lost part of my writing. |

1908 ALLSTAR BREAK SUMMARY………………….
California suprises everyone leading Oakland(5), Baltimor(5.5) and New York(8.5) in the AL pennant race. R.Gordon(7-4, 2.64) and B.Lister(10-1, 3.25) are a big reason. 21yr old Jake Beckley(.317,12,58) is coming into his own. Candy LaChance could be on his way to another home run record as he has 34 at the allstar break. In the NL Houston is holding off suprises Chicago(½) and New York(2). While favorite St.Louis is 5 games back. ALLSTAR GAME 1908.…………….. AL starts 3-time Cy winner Joesph Mutch(11-5, 2.34) of the Oakland A‘s . While the NL goes with Houston Astro’s Jared Castellano(12-2, 2.08). Gary “The Crow” Weedman of the Chicago Cubs went 3 for 3 with a homer and the NL gets revenge with a 8 to 3 win. TRADE DEADLINE………………….. The Royals gave up on 22yr old Sock Seybold sending him to the Cardinals for prospect pitcher William Benjamin and 3B Eugene Baade. Baade has some talent be had been stuck behind Roland Vinton at 3B. The Giants and Yankees made maybe the biggest trade of the decade, Yankees sent starting pitcher John Billips to the Giant who turned around and sent him to the Reds for Larry Cammarata(10-8, 3.58). The Yankees got allstar catcher Willie Seibert(.277,14,54). The Cubs picked up allstar 2B Jeffrey Maria(.269,15,55) from the Dodgers for P Abram McCoy(6-6, 4.16) and P Levi Brown. McCoy was an AS for the Dodgers back in 1901-1902 but has went downhill the last few years. Cubs seem to have gotton a steal. Maria was available after the Dodgers got Vincent Compton from the Yankees. SEPTEMBER 1ST ………..1908.…….PENNANT RACES The Angels just continue to shock people and running away with the AL pennant leading Oakland by 7 games. The evil empire Orioles are 12 games back. The NL is much closer, the Cubs are hanging on by 1.5 games over the Astros. PENNANT RACE HIGHLIGHTS………………… California clinched before the end of the month but the NL race is awesome. Going into the last series, the Cubs have 3 games left with the 3rd place Mets and hold a ½ game lead over the Astros who have 2 games left at Atlanta. 10/2- New York @ Chicago T.Bock won his 20th game pitching a 6-hit shutout as the Cubs no lead by a full game over the Astros. 10/2- Houston @ Atlanta J.Castellano had given up just 1 hit thru 4 innings but had to leave after a 63 min. rain delay but the Astros bullpen held on for a 6-3 win. Cubs lead back down to ½. 10/3- New York @ Chicago The Cubs spot starter Cedric Mason, only his 2nd start all year and they pay for it. Mets win 8 to 6. Cubs and Astros have identical 94-67 records with one game to play. 10/4- Houston @ Atlanta Astros score 6 in the 6th and cruise to a 12-5 win. Cubs must now win to force a tie. 10/4 New York @ Chicago Mets allstar 1B R.Rosendahl homered in the 1st inning off A.Saaterfiel and M.Richards made it stand up pitching a 2-hit shutout as the Mets help elimanate the Cubs 2 to 1. WORLD SERIES PREVIEW… CALIFORNIA (112-50) VS HOUSTON (95-67) The Angels won an unprecedented 112 games and left the Oakland A’s wondering what they needed to do as the win 105 and lose. It was the 3rd time that Oakland has won 100+ games and finished 2nd. California hit .281 as a team, best in the majors led by batting champion Carroll Mendelsohn(.386,4,68). Mendelsohn had finished runnerup in the last two years batting race. 1B Jake Beckley(.320,29,117), CF K.McCarthy(.305,21,79) and LF Paul Waddle(.291,39,95) helped with the offensive load. Angel manager Fred Patek had decided to send 21 game winner W.Burford to the pen and go with Randy Gordon(14-8, 2.60), Bradley Lister(21-3, 3.40) and 25yr old rookie Tanner Fearn(9-4, 3.51) who had just 3 starts but 91 appearances. But those 3 starts were the end of the year and he went 3-0. Houston is here thanks to pitching. They allowed 601 runs, the lowest in the Majors. 21yr old Kurt Wallace(18-8, 2.51), allstar game starter Jared Castellano(22-6, 2.33) and Jesse Johnson(18-5, 3.50) give the Astros the advantage in this area. C Johnny Kling(.330,15,72), 1B Mark Aldana(.276,36,102), SS Timothy Roberson(.316,22,92) and “Porky” Steely(.293,29,95) will handle themselves also. CALIFORNIA 14.…………………..HOUSTON 13 With aces B.Lister and J.Castellano going for both teams, it looked like a pitchers duel on paper. Lister went 6 giving up 11 runs while Castellano went 5.2 and gave up 10. Angels score in top of 10th on a homer by 3B Willie “The Rabbit” Gentry. CALIFORNIA 3.…………………….HOUSTON 2 Angels scored the go ahead run on their last at-bat for the 2nd straight game. This time on a homer by Kenneth McCarthy in the top of the 9th. CALIFORNIA 3.……………………HOUSTON 1 Outfielder Paul Waddle hit 2 homeruns and rookie Tanner Fearn out dueled J.Johnson as the Angels won their first World Series. LaRusa finished as the runner-up in the AL pennant race his first 3 years from 1900-1902. Atlanta fired Hank Aaron and quickly announced the hiring of Tony LaRussa. Aaron lasted just 3-years with a record 206-280 and 7th was the best he finished and that was in his 1st year of 1906. The Phillies fired Richie Ashburn today. Ashburn had a record of 135-189. Ashburn never got his team higher than 9th the last 2 years. The Phils replaced him with Willie Horton. Horton managed the Tigers from 1904-1907, finishing 2nd in his 1st year. But steadly went downhill from there. James Obrien lasted just one year with the Tigers.
