Guys,
When I got my PC a few years back, it came with a real cheap motherboard and I think i want to upgrade but need some advice cuz I don't know much about them. I was looking for something that is not too expensive but offers more then 2 PCI and 1 ISA slots which I have now.

My cpu is a 500Mhz AMD K6-2. Anyone with any suggestions on a certain motherboard.

Willy,

Your 500mhz CPU is right on the edge as far as finding anything still in production that will accept it. I took a quick look at the DFI motherboards and the farthest back they'll support is a 566.

You might want to consider replacing the motherboard and CPU. It woulf give you expansion and a speed boost.

Also, and very important, find someone to go over it with you (friend, store, etc.) becasue there and many "little" things that you have to be aware of as far as compatibility (hard drive, sound, etc.) Nothing would upset you more than to buy the MB and CPU and find out you also had to replace your hard drive.

One more thing, Once you have a good idea what this is going to cost you, compare that with options like buying a refurbished unit from Dell, etc. Lots of good deals there as well. Here's the URL...

All I can suggest is research...research...research!!!

Once you think you've decided what you're going to get...check the manufacturer's website for hardware conflicts...forums are always a great place for that as well.

Guaranteed...there is somebody out there who's got the same hardware you've got and if they've had a problem...sure would be nice to know about it...right??!!!

you might want to consider going to pricewatch.com and looking at the PC-Kits category. This is motherbiard, CPU, memory, and case. Also, some of the newer motherboards have builtin sound & video, so all you have to keep from your old system is the hard drive, floppy drive and CDROM. The kits (also called barebones systems) are pretty reasonably priced, too.

You'll have to do some searching, but I'm sure you'll be able to find a motherboard that is a big upgrade over what you have now for fairly cheap.
Just remember that you may have to rebuild your system (reformat h/d, reload windows, etc.) and you won't get much, if any, of a system performance boost.
