The McCarty Effect

Question to the OT Trivia Gods...

In 1918, the Red Sox managed a World Series win- their last to date- with a team that featured pitcher, and later legendary slugger and position player, Babe Ruth.

In 2004, the Sox have featured a position player who also pitches- David McCarty.

Anyone know if the Sox have had any other two-way players in the years between 1919 and 2003? Might be an interesting storyline...

He'll be sold to the Yankees next year to renew the curse Sorry, couldn't resist.

Does this count if McCarty doesn't make the WS roster?

I don't think there's been any real "legit" two way guys since Ruth for the Sox. I'm not sure if I would even consider McCarty's 3+ IP a qualification for "two-way" guy.

I guess you could consider Player/Manager Joe Cronin a two-way player... but not at all in the sense youre talking about.

Yeah, Cronin was a real two-way player all right...was great at both ruining prospects' careers AND playing crap-ass SS in his later years.

The Mets had a two-way player in Piazza, and they couldn't even make the playoffs!

I would imagine that between now and then....some hitter pitched more than 3 innings in a season for the Redsox.

That hurts. That hurts. Piazza is not gay. But that was still funny.

Or, I figure that in the past ten years, some pitchers have hit more than three times in interleague play.
