Post Newbie HOF question

I'll start out by saying that my baseball knowledge is limited to what I catch on satellite TV occasionally (not being from the US). Combine that with being new to the game, and I have the following question:

My top 3 starters are arguably the best in my fictional league - 53-23 W/L record and a combined ERA of 2.15 in the season just gone (yes, the scorching ERA did not quite convert to wins as my batting is fairly dismal...). Each of these players has managed just one 20 win season in each of the last 3 years, and the league as a whole has only seen 3 others in its four year history. The default HOF qualifying criteria state that a pitcher must have 300 wins or 250 wins plus an ERA under 3.50.
Now assuming a typical career might start at age 25 and run for (I would think at most) 15 years, a pitcher must average 17 wins/season (plus a good ERA) to qualify. Throw in the odd injury and maybe a shorter career and things are looking pretty tough. Obviously a HOF is meant to be hard to get into, but the requirements still looked a little steep. Is this just bad math on my part or do things turn out differently in reality?
The batting qualifications seem more reasonable - 3000 hits translates to 200 per season for 15 years which seems fairly 'routine' for a quality player.
So are a few tweaks required for the qualifying criteria or am I just overthinking things?
