Chapter One: The Big Day

Chapter One: The Big Day
Finally, after years of waiting I have made it. Or at least I have made it to Draft Day. It was one o’clock and I was waiting in my living room with friends and family. I was expected to be a top 3 pick so could you imagine how nervous I was? Detroit, who has the first pick in the draft , was taking forever and it was making the knots in my stomach even more tighter. My father noticed this and told me to calm down, they haven’t even picked yet. Of coarse I knew this already. Maybe the reason why they were taking so long was because they were talking about me? I was somewhat of an injury prone guy. I suffered a major injury to my pitching arm back in high school and eventually had to have surgery on it before I entered my junior year of college. I talked to my dad about this. He was a ballplayer also. But he didn’t make it very far. His career ended as a minor leaguer for the Kansas City Royals. I never did get up enough courage to ask him what happened. Whenever he would start talking about his past he would kind of tail off when it came down to baseball so I left it at that.

After a couple hours of waiting , Doug Jones, the owner of Detroit, came out to the stand. Right at that very moment the telephone rang and I jumped up instantly and answered it:

“Hello” I said
“ This is Mike Adams, General Manager of Detroit, is Joel Huston around?”
“Speaking”
“ Yes, Joel ,I just wanted to let you know that you will be the first overall pick in this years draft. And welcome to the team.”
“….Thanks”
“ To start you off” Mike said” You will receive a $3,050,000 signing bonus and report to Single A Lexington on Monday.”
“Sure thing boss”

Just as I hung up the phone I saw that Milwaukee was making their selection. I wanted to see the replay of the first round selection because I have never saw myself on tv before. I guess that will have to wait until tomorrow. ..if I have time.

Finally, the day was coming a close. It was a very busy day for the Huston Household. I had to give a couple interviews since I was the first overall pick and my family actually had a few interviews to do also. They all got kicked out though once the media got on my dad about his playing days. The next morning wasn’t quite as hectic. With the money I received I needed to buy myself a truck so I could drive down to Lexington. So after breakfast I went to a used car lot. I wasn’t really looking for anything top notch. Just something to get myself from point A to point B. I looked at a couple trucks. An 89 Ford which was in great shape and was only a couple thousand dollars. It ate up the gas like it was nothing though so I had to pass on that. Twelve miles to the gallon wasn’t was I was looking for. I wanted a truck though, I knew that much. After hours of looking I finally found it. I am going to get a GMC Sierra. I always had a thing with them before. Ever since I was little I liked them. I don’t know why. As it all came out, I spent 10 grand on a GMC Sierra 1500 short bed. I liked the short beds better than the longer ones. It looks better in my opinion.

I had 3 days to drive from Florida, where my parents house is, to Texas. Why I stayed at my parents house instead of them coming over to mine in Texas was beyond me. I guess I didn’t think things through. But either way, I had three days. I would have to leave later tonight to make it there and find a place to stay so all my goodbyes would need to be done right now.

…So ends chapter one, Next up Goodbyes, Goodbyes and Trouble.
