Question Coaches and Scouts

Ok...I'm trying to do coaches and scouts now. Since I chose to not use the financial element of the game, it would seem that I have enough money to sign whichever coaches I want. Am I reading this right? Would it be fair to sign the best? What about my second team? They haven't had a chance to sign any coaches yet..........jeez this game really does need a detailed manual!!!

So.....it would appear that my question(s) are throwing people off (since no one has responded). How about if I try to break this down into point form. Then you can answer only the question(s) you know.......please!

1) though I turned the financial option off, signing coaches and scouts still seems to involve money. Why?

2) are these people important to your teams' development program or is this option mostly window dressing?

3) am I cheating if I sign all the best people since I seem to have more than enough money.

4) I have a 2nd team. Will this team have to take what's left?

Closing Comment : may God bless the person whoever gets a detailed manual out there for this game!!!............so I can stop asking so many questions.

AMEN on the manual!!! I already put my wish for a manual to be issued with OOTP7. (I don't know if OOTP Developments are always behind the curve ball like this, so I figure it's never too early to start reminding them.)

As far as the coaches and scouts go, (I have my financial simulations turned of also), I go ahead and sign the best that I can get. Sometimes they will turn you down, and sometimes there just aren't any good ones available.

Something I do is turn my temporarily switch my team to "Controlled by: Computer Manager" during each day of the coaches/scout signing period. This gets me them like it does for the computer teams - not getting the best ones just because I can afford them. I have gotten a reasonable mix of good and not-so-good coaches doing this.

The only thing I have seen the AI do while in control of my team is make a few waiver claims, which I was able remove by taking back control after each day.

Coaches/Scouts are pointless. Also I do not understand why people need a manual. If you have trouble understanding how to play OOTP then maybe you shouldn't have dropped out of school! This is NOT a difficult game to understand on any level.

I wouldn't say that. I like the coaches/scout feature. I don't really want to see a players ACTUAL ratings but I do want some idea.

I don't think anyone needs a manual to just play the game. I think a manual would give us some insight as to how the game is working behind the scenes. If we have an idea how some of the features actually work and what results to expect if they are changed...don't you think that is better than having to constantly test to get the results we would like?

Sometimes people forget this, but many of the specific questions that are posed on these boards could never be covered in a manual. I started playing OOTP in version 5, which had a manual. It only answered the most basic questions. I still benefited much more from the help that was given me by all the veterans who frequent these boards.

Don't misunderstand. I'm not saying we shouldn't have a manual; we should. But just remember that many issues raised here can't possibly be addressed in even a very detailed manual.

That's why these forums will always be invaluable.

I like having the coaches and scouts. I have everything turned on with the exception of minor league free agency. If you want it to be as real as can get, why wouldn't you want the coaches and scouts? Even though some scout may be outstanding, I've still seen examples of them being wrong about a player. But that's what really happens in baseball....
