You're welcome

I just thought I would post a generalized "you're welcome" to all of you out there who have downloaded and installed my fictional OOTP6 Texas League and have sent me so many messages of thanks and so many compliments (along with some suggested changes, which is why it's on version 1.4!).

Apparently the Texas League is the only OOTP6 fictional league out there with all the trimmings. I had no idea that it was, and I would have never guessed that it would be so popular, and I am pleased that so many of you are enjoying it so much.

If you haven't tried it yet, version 1.4 is at:

Hey Malleus, why isn't Lubbock, the 11th biggest city in Texas, there, when Baton Rouge and New Orleans, which aren't even in Texas, there? Not bashing you, looks like a good league that I'll spend some time playing. Just a jealous guy from Lubbock.

Honest answer? Lubbock's not in there because I hate the place.

New Orleans and Baton Rouge are in there to give the league some built-in evil, nasty, corrupt, and easy-to-hate villains. If you don't like that, well, you've got an editor and it's five minutes work to convert them to Lubbock and, say, Port Lavaca.

I think MD is saying that while Louisiana is lovably evil, Lubbock is just plain evil.

... but I'm just an Yankee, so what do I know?

Lubbock is bad rather than evil, boring rather than causing a reaction beyond "Ick." It's one of the few places in Texas where you can get up on a stage and yell out "Don't you hate this place?" and get a resounding "YES!" back from the crowd instead of having stuff thrown at you. But if you really want Lubbock in the league, well, you have an editor.

Louisiana, on the other hand, is Pure Sin. Alcohol 24/7 (there are bars in New Orleans that not only never close but that don't even have any doors to ever shut), loose and pretty women, awesome food, politicians so slick that they make Chicago mafiosos and South American junta members look like amateurs, a little voodoo...

Very true, I should have included that in the list.

Scouts and finances are off. Ability Ratings and Talent Ratings are hidden. Stars are off. Why is all of this hidden or off? Simple: the game is much more challenging that way, as you get to manage by the seat of your pants and by player statistics rather than just by looking up ratings and potentials on a chart. Is this guy better than that guy? You better look at their records and make your best guess, because you're not ever going to *know*...well, not until its too late. Also, trying to figure out how much value your SS has right now and how much he will have later become burning and nailbiting questions and not something you can just look up. Will you make good guesses and be a John Schuerholz, or will you make terrible ones and be a Dan Duquette? It's all up to you. Welcome to the hard part of a GM's job. Take your best shot.

The default league settings also force you to look at minor league performance to decide who goes to the majors and who doesn't. Potential? Ratings? These are unknowns - all you know is the guy went .275-75-30 in AAA ball...or .250-35-5. Or that he had an ERA of 3.56 in AA and a R/9 of 1.5 and so on.

I left the "Other Ratings" visible, because any manager can determine how much speed a guy has with a stopwatch and a stretch of grass, and any pitching coach can watch and see how many innings it takes to wear a pitcher out, and any coach can tell whether a guy fields like Andruw Jones or like Lonnie Smith in a very short time. These things can be easily known. Potential? That's another thing entirely. You don't get to know that. You have to study performance and then infer and imply...and then make your best educated guess and hope that you're right.

That's the way I like to play the game. Your mileage may vary. I deliberately didn't lock the ratings, because even though I may have built the league, it's your game and your league on your computer now, and you should play it in whatever manner you like. Me, I like it tough and as realistic as possible but like I said, your mileage may vary. Try it my way, and if you don't like it, change it to suit yourself...but I bet you'll like it, it makes the game play more like baseball.

But however you choose to play it, good luck and enjoy the league. It's given me a LOT of great gaming.

From Houston, take I-10 West to Columbus. Exit onto Highway 71 and then go northwest until you hit Austin (there's a lot of good scenery on that road, by the way). I'll be somewhere around Barton Springs Road, which is south of Town Lake. Try Chuy's or Shady Grove around dinnertime. I'm the big guy in the corner with the cute blonde wife. We'll feed you beer and tamales and burritos until you calm down, and then you can admire a great Texas city with us.

That would be Austin, of course.

"Lubbock, Texas

There are a number of existing "Lubbock jokes" frequently told by folks from more, uh, user-friendly parts of the state, such as the one about the engineers making all of the roads into Lubbock one way because there was no other way to get people to stay there. Or the one that goes,

Why are there so many good musicians from west Texas?
Because there's nothing else to do there except practice."

Someone pointed out to me privately that Garland is bigger than Lubbock is and I didn't give Garland its own team either.

No, *Elvis* is still the king. Lubbock, OTOH, is just an awful city.

Say Henry/Steve, at what point is it okay to say anything ? Do I have to be a 60 year old Southerner to post in this thread and not get it deleted ?
