Question Rookie questions

I recently purchased OOTP and love it. I am playing a single - fictional league.

I recently traded for a 5 star pitching prospect who had solid numbers at A for his original team. He had just been called up to AA when I acquired him. After having him in my system for 2 starts he ruptured his bicep tendon. His prospect rating went from 5 to 2.5 and his ability ratings all took a hit as well.

Is this because he is injured? Or does it have to do with poor scouting reports while he was in another organization?

Also, is there a "how to" or "help" menu anywhere in the game?

Welcome to the world of OOTP!

As for the stars, ratings, and talent - those can and will fluctuate during the player's career. A significant injury can decrease any or all of these areas, but it won't always have an effect.

As for the help/how to - there is some information on the game screens (particularly in the League Setup screens), most of the rest you'll probably have to visit this forum for discussions and studies, of which there's quite a lot. A game manual is being developed but is not yet ready. Best bet is to do a search on this message board for answers, if you can't find them post a new thread, like you just did.

Its because he got hurt. He'll almost never get his 5-start talent level back, although there is a chance he'll improve a little from where he is right now.

1. If you have coaches and scouts on, it could be faulty scouting. I doubt it though, 2.5 stars is a big difference. What was his star rating for your team when you acquired him? Likely the difference is caused by the injury. The injury caused ratings decreases (bumps) and affected his star rating.

2. No. There's no manual either currently. The OOTP5 manual could give you some help though the rating systems have changed. The OOTP5 manual can be downloaded here

If the manual doesn't help, there's a bunch of guys who'll be happy to help you out if you post your questions here.

I don't remember looking at his star rating after he came to my organization.

That stinks he will probably never be a 5 star player again. Then again it is also awesome that this game makes everything as real as anything I have ever played.

I am sure I will be posting ?'s frequently.

We'll be glad to answer anything you throw at us. It's good to see someone who can appreciate something that adds a touch of realism rather than constantly complaining about something that might be missing. Welcome to the community!

I had a league in ootp5 where Javier Vazquez got hurt with season ending inj in 2003 and 2004 and then never made out of AAA again in his career. It's pretty cool that a superstar can drop of the face of the earth just like in real life. Most games the good players are good year after year no matter what. I like the element of surprise, it makes the game worth playing.

Correct-a-mundo! (But the element of surprise sucks when it's your top minor league prospect!)

Even so, events like this make OOTP as interesting (sometimes even more interesting) than real life. Injuries have ruined the careers of many very promising young players in real life. Just ask any real life major league GM!

Better yet - ask Brien Taylor...

The unpredictability is what makes this game. When I used to play in Strat-O-Matic leagues, I used to try to find ways of making the game less predictable. I would randomize which player card for a given player I would use for each season, for instance, rather than using them in the proper order.
