Is this a stat?

I am a stats freak myself and I was looking around for "obsolete" stats in baseball. The one I can not find is "Out of play or OOP" stats. I would consider this a stat where a batter hits balls that are out of play yet the contact of the ball is made. For example, a player can make contact with a ball several times during a game that are "out of play" hits (into the stands, ect).

Anyone else agree that this could make a useful stat as far as making contact with the ball? Maybe slugging % may be considered the same, not sure though.

Well, that would certainly be an interesting statistic to look at. Strictly speaking a statistic is:"A numerical value, such as standard deviation or mean, that characterizes the sample or population from which it was derived" - American Heritage. I'm not sure how pratical or useful this would be outside of academic, but it is certainly a statistic. Let me know if you find anything

I thought this was an "is this acronym a government agency or a baseball stat" thread.

I'm not following exactly what this would be describing. All balls leaving the field of play? HR & ground-rule doubles sort of things? Or foul balls (presumably into the stands) also or instead?

The usefullness may be in the fact that contact has been made with the ball. Even though it is foul, contact with the ball is at least made. This may help GM's analysis players as far as if a player can even make contact.

For example, lets say John Doe is pitched to 20 times in a game. Lets say he struck out 3 times but he actually fouls off 10 pitches. He has actaully made contact with the ball 10 out of 20 times. The remainder pitches were balls or strikes. So that would be a % of .500 of contact made.

No HRs or ground-rule doubles. Just balls that were hit out of play (into the stands) or foul balls (not into the stands).

I see. Don't they (whoever "they" are) at least now track swings-and-misses? Seems like something I've seen in the last year or so a couple of times in reference to Juan Pierre & Ichiro.
