"It's too early in the season to talk about an extension!"

Is this ever going to be changed? For as long as I've been playing OOTP you have not been able to negotiate with someone before May of their final season, which is completely unrealistic. Plenty of players sign extensions during the offseason in the Majors. Why have we always had to wait?

I've never understood this either. In fact, why does a player even have to be in his last year to sign an extension. Granted, most players wouldn't want to do that, but some very well might, just to avoid having to worry about free agency. Especially players with high loyalty.

I also wish you could restructure contracts with players and play them different amounts of money for each year of their contracts, but I think I'll have to wait until at least OOTP9 for that.

I'm not sure I understand what you're talking about. One of my player just signed a contract extention in April of his final season. (BTW he wasn't an arbitration eligible player; his last contract is also a multi-year contract if you wonder.) He is a 4-star shorstop and signed a 4-year extention worth 4.75M per year.

I believe those who told you "It's too early in the season... blah blah blah..." are simply trying to delay the contract talk and usually change their tone
to "I'm in my prime and want to test the market..." later. I think, in fact, they've already set their heart for testing the FA market earlier in the season but just wanted to wait and see in case anything unexpected might happen.

Yes players resign all the time early in the season especially the older veteran players. I think it is a nice mix and makes the game more fun. I mean what is the point of resigning everyone on the first day of the season? That would be stupid and unrealistic. While OOTP has many flaws, this is not one of them.

Loyal players will resign as soon as the season starts (almost ... second week, anyway), and at a significant discount over what they might otherwise hold out for later in the season or in FA. Show them the same loyalty they have for you, and they'll be grateful ....
