Player Contracts Ref Career Ending Injury

I searched this forum and couldnt find anything ref to this so if I over looked it I apologize.

What happens to a players contract at the end of season if he has had a career ending injury? I know he we will be paid for the rest of season but he still has 3 more years left on his contract. Will he retire? causing the contract to expire?
