Mmorpg

I am looking into the feasibility of starting a game development company with my first game being a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game called "The Show!"

It's a bit like ITP in that you are a baseball player working your way up through the minors into the Major Leagues. The difference is that it is graphic driven (similar to MVP baseball) and every other player in the Baseball universe (Minor leagues and major leagues) is similar to you in that they are online also.

Basically, it is a virtual baseball universe where you start out as an 18 year old kid going to a baseball tryout. Your skills are determined by how well you hit, throw, run, pitch. You can increase your skills through workouts and stuff.

The real thrill of this MMORPG is that you can play the games. When you are at bat you are facing someone who is pitching against you. When you are in the field, you play as that fielder, watching the action in third person and responding to the action in that way.

You can play as many or as few games as you wish. If you're not online, your player will continue to play the games using a virtual representation of your abilities for that particular game. However, the more actual time you put into being online and working to improve your player, the better your player will become.

This, of course is just a thin outline, and there would be options for you instead of being a player, to be the manager, GM, scout or whatever you like in this baseball universe.

I'd like some feedback on this idea before I move forward.

Thanks.

There is a mmorpg in development, with this theme. Darned if I can remember the name, though.

I think it's a great idea, and certainly where video games are headed in the future. If you were able to get in on the ground floor and get some really well written code systems written you could have a gold mine.

BTW, need a good Java programmer?

I'm looking at running this on the XBOX, and am trying to get into the XBOX incubator program which allows me access to Microsoft programming systems and possibly the new XNA system which gives you most of the code and you just have to work on the creativity side. So I'm looking at putting together a small team that can have a working prototype (if accepted by Microsoft) in place in six months.

Good luck. Most MMORPGs have development times of 2+ years. 6 months is awfully optimistic.

That's still about 50-75% of the dev cycle. It can be done but they'll have to work hard.
