Question Question: Setting up a MLB league for the first time

Hello all,

I'm a brand-spankin' new OOTP player. I'm looking to set up a league mimicking the 2004 MLB season, and had some questions.

I reviewed Steve Kuffrey's excellent thread here:

http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ead.php?t=5499

It's my understanding that to create a reasonable facsimile of an MLB league, you need the following pieces of custom data:
  1. MLB roster set
  2. Stadiums
  3. Player Photos
  4. Team logos
I'm just trying to figure out the correct order in which to do this. The roster set will be in the form of a league folder. So, I start with that, then update the stadium info (for example using Ankit's stadiums). Then the team logos, and the player photos.

Once I have all of that, I can copy it all into the create.lg and use it for future revisions as well.

Does this sound like approximately the correct process?

Also, I've seen a few MLB roster sets. The CBL ones, and (on another site) a set by someone named Halofan. Is it pretty much personal preference?

Thanks for helping out a newbie.

Absolutely spot on on the order. Download the league file first.

For the stadium, the dat files (park, parkconfig and weather) get copied and pasted into the league file. The stad images go into OOTP6/Graphics folder (they should be in .bmp format). The player photos go into the 'photos' folder in the .lg folder. The logos go in the logo folder, which you will also find in the .lg folder.

To reiterate, get the league folder (.lg), then copy all things into the appropriate folder of that, apart from the stad images which go in the graphics folder of the program folder. Hope this helps, and have fun!

What happens if photos don't synch up with rosters? For example, I download Person A's roster file. Then I download Person B's photo set.

How do those two get synched up correctly? Will it just show no photo if a photo is missing? I'm thinking of things like if the Roster Set says "Thome, Jim" and the photo says "Thome, James". Or something like that.

Or do these things generally work out pretty well?

Also, one more question. I've noticed that updates to roster sets come out during the year.

Let's say I've started my own season with a roster set. Halfway through my simmed season, I've traded some players away, and a new version of my roster set comes out. Do I somehow upload that? Or would it overwrite all of the things that happened in my simmed season so far?

Just curious.

Can't be at home with the OOTP PC right now, so next best thing!

The roster set names tend to match exactly with photo names, normally because the information is taken from a fairly standardised source - MLB official info (such as what the Lahman Database is based on).

DD's facepack gives a list of the exceptions (there are only a couple). Those that are are quite easy to guess - like Mark 'I' Johnson for example. But it really won't be a problem for anything but 4 or 5 guys.

On the other issue, a roster file represents a 'starting point' for your MLBHistory - from then on everything as it were is newly written. Basically, the updates just change the starting point, so if you wanted to play with an updated roster, you'd need to start again. And trust me, once you've started, you won't want to stop...
