White Sox Dynasty
I will attempt to turn my favorite team, the White Sox, into a dynasty. I am using CBL's 2.0 rosters, have the cash max to virtually unlimited, coaches and scouts on, and ratings 1-100 on everything (not as hard-core as most of you I know, but oh well).
This will most likely be a pretty informal report. I will "watch" each game from my GM skybox. |

I signed a 1-year, $475,000 contract to take over my lifelong favorite team. I couldn't be more excited about the opportunity. The first thing I need to do is set the rosters.
In the majors we will be carrying 12 pitchers. I like the extra flexibility this gives me, and I do not feel that I need another bat off the bench in the American League. Coming up: White Sox 25-man roster preview |

Starting Rotation:
1. R Esteban Loaiza – Not going to repeat last year’s stellar performance, but definitely capable of giving us 200+ solid innings with an ERA under 4. 2. L Mark Buehrle – Works real quick and rarely issues walks. However, he doesn’t keep the ball down too well, so it’s a good possibility that his 4.14 ERA from last year will increase a little. 3. L Scott Schoeneweis – Ken Williams was going to non-tender Scott at first, but brought him back, hoping he’d be worth the money as a starter. We’ll see. If he can develop a change-up he’ll be great. If not…. 4. R Jon Garland – Has a great sinker, but it hasn’t gotten him big K numbers yet. Also doesn’t have great breaking stuff. Hopefully he doesn’t get too expensive before he really takes off. 5. R Enemencio Pacheco – Who? Acquired from the Rockies for a Sandy Alomar rental. Greatly improved his command last year. Might need a little work, but will be fighting with Jon Garland to keep the ML spot when Robert Person comes back from the DL and Felix Diaz is ready to be called up. Mopup Reliever: 1. R Billy Koch – Known to many White Sox fans as “Billy Botch,” I’m not letting him near a close game. He will get mopup duties and regular middle relief duties. His fastball dropped a good 5 mph after being traded from Oakland. 2. R Jon Adkins – The 12th man in the bullpen. Acquired in the Ray Durham trade. Wasn’t really a top-level prospect then or now. A solid pitcher that has the potential to eat innings if we need him to. Middle Reliever: 1. R Cliff Politte – Signed in the offseason, replaced Escobar in the closer’s role in Toronto last year. Came apart after a month in that role. We’ll see what happens. 2. R Jose Santiago – A minor league free agent signed from Cleveland. Had an ERA of 2.84 in 31.2 innings for the Tribe last year, still needs to develop a splitter or some kind of trick pitch. 3. R Billy Koch Set-Up Reliever: 1. R Shingo Takatsu – Nicknamed “Mr. Zero” in Japan, due to the fact that he was almost perfect in the postseason. 2. L Vic Darensbourg – Pretty average across the board. Closer: 1. L Damaso Marte – Nasty pitcher. Capable of being like a young Arthur Rhodes. Has a few wild outings, but he’s by far our best pitcher. |

Lineups:
Vs. RHP+DH 1. S Jose Valentin SS – Has taken his share of criticism for a low BA and high error rates. Hits right-handed pitchers for power, draws walks, and saves more than enough plays with his range and arm to cover his mistakes. An underrated player. 2. R Sandy Alomar C – A veteran presence and successful working with Mark Buehrle. Hopefully will be able to unload him later this season to get Olivo the guaranteed starting job. 3. R Carlos Lee LF – Not a bad player and is underrated in left field. Might show a power surge that could make him an MVP candidate like Shannon Stewart was, if we pull it together for six months. 4. R Magglio Ordonez CF – I know, I know. Magglio in center? Well, I’m letting the AI generate auto-lineups and rotations for me. I figure that’s one advantage I can cut back. Ordonez has been very consistent the past four years. He doesn’t miss much playing time, and his defense has also been consistent in right. Hopefully he’ll play just as well if not better in center. 5. R Frank Thomas DH – Has been effective the second half of his career, a fact covered up by his absurd first half. Hopefully we get to see him go nuts in October, like Barry Bonds did. However, he’s still a sure-fire Hall of Famer. 6. R Aaron Rowand RF – Nothing special here. Mashes lefties, doesn’t hit righties too well. Hopefully he can turn that around here. 7. R Paul Konerko 1B – Not nearly as bad as his abysmal first half last year. I’m looking for about what he hit the second half, about .275 or so, with about a .350 OBP. 8. R Joe Crede 3B – Like Konerko, looked like a huge disappointment the first half of the season. Turned it around to hit .308 after reuniting with Greg Walker, his minor-league hitting instructor. Plays solid defense and shows excellent range. Not going to be a superstar, but should be a solid player for us. 9. R Juan Uribe 2B – Neifi Perez offensively, he’s in the lineup for his glove. Still young enough to turn it around with his bat, and will get an opportunity to do so with us. Vs. LHP+DH 1. R Joe Crede 3B 2. R Miguel Olivo C – Has more power than he showed last year. His offensive potential is still up in the air, but he has an outstanding arm. Hopefully will develop a bat though. 3. R Frank Thomas 1B 4. R Magglio Ordonez RF 5. R Aaron Rowand DH 6. R Carlos Lee LF 7. S Joe Borchard CF – Had a terrible year in 2003, tinkering with his swing all season long. However, he’s a good enough center fielder. Still possible to turn into a Jay Buhner type, a late bloomer who will start to take some walks. 8. R Juan Uribe 2B 9. S Jose Valentin SS Bench: CF Timo Perez – Not nearly the player people thought he was going to be back in 2000, he’s nothing more than a spare outfielder these days. Look for him to be moved or released this season. CF Jeremy Reed – After being called up to AA Birmingham, had a .409 average for the half season he was there. He also runs well, had over a 2/1 K/BB ratio last year, and has gap power that will hopefully turn into homerun power as he develops. Could be a Rusty Greer type. However, Baseball Prosepectus’ has two of his top six PECOTA comparables as Tony Gwynn and Don Mattingly. Probably won’t stick in the majors for too long to start the season, mostly going to be a defensive replacement here. |

Charlotte Knights pitching staff:
Starting Rotation: 1. R Kris Honel – Doesn’t get as much hype as Neal Cotts, but a better prospect. Has a great knuckle-curve, a fastball in the high 80s with movement, and solid mechanics. Similar to St. Louis’ Adam Wainwright, will probably be a future #2 or #3. 2. R Felix Diaz – Mid-90s fastball and a power slider. Has had some injury troubles. Made some progress with his control last season and could see some time in the Sox rotation later this season. 3. R Dan Wright – Faltered badly last season, due to bad command, a high homer rate, and “elbow soreness.” Big and tall, and throws hard. Other than that, not too much of a pitcher. 4. L Corwin Malone – Has had 2 rough seasons, struggling with control and elbow problems. Velocity is down, curveball hasn’t shown up. Began as a reliever, and could be hurt due to his 2001 season where he had 170 innings between three levels. We’ll need to be careful with him. 5. L Neal Cotts – In case you can’t tell, I’m not too big on Cotts. He’s not ready for the majors, having high walk rates, not having a BB/9 rate lower than 5 the past 3+ seasons, including a terrible 11.1 BB/9 in Chicago last year. He also has a delivery that puts a lot of strain on….you guess it…his elbow. He does have a fastball that moves well, he keeps the ball down, and changes speeds effectively, but he’s a huge risk right now. Spot Starter: R Tetsu Yofu – Had been the ace of the Brother Elephants, Taiwan’s most popular major league team. Throws strikes and mixes his pitches well enough to possibly be useful to another team. Will look to deal him for almost anything. Middle Reliver: 1. R Tetsu Yofu 2. R Jason Grilli Set-Up Reliever: 1. R Mike Jackson |

Charlotte Knights lineup:
1. L Willie Harris 2B – Not really sure what to make of Willie. He’s a good AAA player, but has had terrible major league stats. Not sure whether he needs regular playing time or what, but he’ll get it in AAA. 2. 3. R Jamie Burke C – Had some good numbers last year at Charlotte, hitting .322. However, he was 31 years old and in his 5th AAA season. 4. L Ross Gload 1B – Remember Pedro Cerrano from the movie Major League? This is the real-life version of him. Hits fastballs a ton but struggles with breaking stuff. Might get called up in the future to be a left-handed bat off the bench. 5. L Marvin Benard LF – Spent the past 2 years recovering from various knee surgeries. Could still be a decent fifth outfielder if I decide to send some of my young guys down to the minors to get regular playing time, or if I trade any of them. 6. 7. 8. 9. |

Birmingham Barons pitching staff:
Starting Rotation: 1. L Josh Stewart – Not really much of a prospect, with a ceiling most likely at AAA. 2. R Jon Rauch – 6’11”. Every time there’s a tall pitcher, people compare him to Randy Johnson. A pitcher needs to use his height to his advantage by throwing from different angles or with some movement. Rauch doesn’t really do that. His fastball is pretty flat, he has high HR rates (almost 1.5 HR/9 average the past 3 years), and doesn’t really fool anybody. Has decent command and could be a #3 starter, but he’ll have to pick it up to do so. Middle Reliever: 1. L Fabio Castro 2. L Ryan Meaux – Smart, able to locate his curveball anywhere in the strike zone. Had an Eckersley-like 85:6 K/BB ratio since he came into the Sox organization in the Lofton deal. Doesn’t throw hard, but has a good chance to contribute in the majors down the road. Set-Up Reliever: 1. L David Sanders – Unimpressive in his 3 months in Chicago last year, not really showing much command. Had a good ERA at Birmingham last year, but might get buried behind the other relief prospects in the organization. 2. L Arnaldo Munoz – A good prospect with a big curve. Talk of moving him to the rotation is premature. |

Winston-Salem Warthogs pitching staff:
Starting Rotation: 1. L Jay Marshall 2. R Todd Deininger 3. L Tim Tisch 4. L Ryan Wing – Good movement on his cutter and tough on lefties. Still needs better control. 5. R Brandon McCarthy Middle Reliever: 1. R Fernando Hernandez Set-Up Reliever: 1. R Rick Hummel 2. R Orionny Lopez |

Winston-Salem Warthogs lineup:
1. S Ruddy Yan DH 2. R Pedro Lopez 2B 3. R Brian Anderson LF – First-round pick in 2003. Toolsy player out of the University of Arizona. Showed good plate discipline in the Pioneer League. Wrist surgery ended his season early last year. Although it’s real early, he realistically could be a good hitter, like Andy Van Slyke. 4. R Antoin Gray 3B 5. L Clint King CF 6. R Rob Valido SS – Another 2003 draft pick. Came out of high school with the reputation of a defensive guy first, but put up good offensive numbers in his pro debut (.307/.364/.479). Could be a good prospect in a year, or completely forgotten about. It depends on how well his bat develops. 7. L Ricardo Nanita 1B (Teach) 8. L Ryan Sweeney C (Teach) 9. R Chris Young RF |

40-man roster
There are only 27 players on the 40-man roster right now, as I want to evaluate the prospects and see how they do before adding them. The 2 on the 40-man that aren't on the active roster are MRs Robert Person and Kelly Wunsch, both on the DL. I will be starting the season shortly. If you want to know anything, please let me know. I'm not too experienced in writing dynasties, so any feedback is appreciated. |

White Sox Game Report 4/5/2004
Game #1: At Kansas City We open the season in Kansas City, with Loaiza going against L Darrell May. Lineups: White Sox: 1. R Joe Crede 3B 2. R Miguel Olivo C 3. R Frank Thomas 1B 4. R Magglio Ordonez RF 5. R Aaron Rowand DH 6. R Carlos Lee LF 7. S Joe Borchard CF 8. R Juan Uribe 2B 9. S Jose Valentin SS Kansas City: 1. S Desi Relaford 2B 2. R Mike Sweeney 1B 3. L Matt Stairs DH 4. R Juan Gonzalez RF 5. S Carlos Beltran CF 6. R Joe Randa 3B 7. L Aaron Guiel LF 8. R Benito Santiago C 9. R Angel Berroa SS Looking at the matchups, this game looks like it could go either way. I settle in to my skybox and watch the action. The Royals get on the board first in the bottom of the 2nd, on a single by Joe Randa that drives home Juan Gonzalez with nobody out. Angel Berroa hits a sac fly with the bases loaded and 1 out, bringing home Beltran, and the runners advance a base on Lee’s terrible throw from the outfield. Desi Relaford followed it up with a 2-run single on a 2-2 count to give the Royals a 4-run lead after 2. Next inning, Juan Gonzalez leads off with a home run to give the Royals a 5-0 lead that chases Loaiza from the game. Koch comes in and walks Beltran before getting Randa to ground into the 5-4-3 double play. We get on the board in the 4th. Rowand gets on base with a single to left, and Carlos doubled. Borchard grounds out to short, scoring Rowand from 3rd. Juan Uribe singled in Carlos to cut the lead to 5-2. KC got another run in the 6th off of a solo shot by Benito Santiago with 1 out. Nothing else happens the rest of the game and it ends up being a 6-2 final. POG: Darrell May (1-0) 8.1 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 115 PI, 72 PS Other performances: Juan Gonzalez: 2-4, HR, 2 R, RBI, K Benito Santiago: 1-3, HR, 2 R, RBI, BB, K |
