More and more leagues are folding....

Over the past few weeks more and more leagues have folded, no matter if real MLB, historical or fictional. And most of the still existing leagues I know are struggling to get all teams occupied.
I think we have reached our limits. Hopefully this "everybody opens his own league" will finally stop.
I'm not saying that we don't need anymore new leagues but I think people should think about the possibility that their league in which they invested time and money could last no longer than 1-2 seasons.

And to be honest I don't see any cure for this.

I have also noticed this and completely agree. I have seen more leagues start up with 5-15 open slots and have some long time run leagues struggle to stay full. Although I know people love to start their own team, but is starting your own team only to see it fold, better than taking over a team in a sure fire league?

As a word of advice if you want a team from a specific year start a solo league rather than starting an online league hoping people will fill it up.

When looking for a league take a sacrafice and take that team in the veteran league!

Another problem is that people always want to be part of a league from the beginning instead of taking that spot in a older league. This way both leagues are done !

I don't think this is any more of a problem than its been from the onset of OOTP and online leagues.

Actually, I've never seen this as a problem at all. The best leagues stick and the less than good leagues fold.

The difference right now is that more online leagues are opening that ever before. I also know from really good leagues that have been around for several years now and they have problems, too.

Ah, the periodic "too many leagues" thread.

Wake me when it's over

i run 7 leagues and i dont have a problem keeping them full.....i have spots open every now and then but nothing that would destroy or cause a league to crumble....i think it may be that leagues just dont get that push when they are new....it really helps out when GM's from leagues come on the boards and recommend a league that they are in, that way the new GM has a "test drive" of that league

ever before=June, 2003?

That's your join date on this board.

Really, this is a 'chicken little' reaction that we get about this time each year. Don't sweat it. In all my seasons of running leagues, I've never ran a sim with a team needing an owner.

This is false. If you have TC Dale in your league as an owner, then every sim you run has a team with a need for an owner.

To be quite honest I don't care a thing about online leagues folding. The leagues I'm in are doing fine. All I wanted to say is that if you're thinking about opening a league you shouldn't be too dissapointed if it either doesn't even start or closes in a few seasons.
And I do think that there is a problem with too many leagues around- even if it's discussed before.
But hey I'll just shut up and relax and not 'chicken little' react around. Thanks.

Btw these are the kind of posts that make me switch my computer off for a couple of days because I just realize I'm corresponding with some really strange people. Relax man and try to enjoy your life.
And if you disagree with me than you can always tell me like an academic normally should. Oh I forgot......

Skywalker:

My view is that there will always be great leagues starting, which will likely be successful, and there will always be leagues that are doomed. I prefer to let the "free market" sort 'em out.

BTW, I love your sig.

What he's saying is that this isn't the first time we've seen this. If you came aboard in 2003, you didn't see this in 2002 (where it happened, and the discussion was along these lines).

For those who haven't been around as long, one may feel that, well, as your post came across, the OOTP online league world is crumbling (although you did say your leagues are fine, it comes off a bit as your leagues are the only ones left standing).

Simply put...when a new game comes out, a lot of leagues will form. Just the way it is. And 90% of those leagues will fold, for a variety of reasons. We haven't "reached our limits"; it's just a lot of people don't realize what they're getting into when taking on a new league, and bite off more than they can chew.

Cooley is right, however, when he says that the best leagues will stick. I think it's more true to say the more stable leagues will stick...but that depends on how stability fits into your definition of "best".

^^owner/GM Baltimore Atlantics; owners of the worst record in the Union's Continental League.

This would seem to infer that TC's team (without an owner) does better than this poster's team WITH an owner!!1

I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I am starting 4 new leagues tomorrow!!! PM me for details!

....no not really
Anyway, as wireman was saying.... the free market sorts em out. If its a good league it'll stand the test of time

I’m not sure which leagues are folding since I don’t follow them as close as I use to but I haven’t seen any of the several leagues I follow fold. I guess you are talking about the several real roster leagues that have sprung up recently. Many of them are opened by inexperienced Commissioners, who accept owners on a first come, first served basis in which you see the same gang sign up for teams who also joined the last 5 new online leagues. The experienced OOTP people generally can spot the league with precarious potential and avoid them, which in turn makes the league unstable from the start.

You look at league announcements like Akrobat’s FLASH or jazzrack’s Corporate Baseball League and compare them with the standard “New league open, many teams available, shoot me a PM” type announcement post of several other leagues and you can sort of spot which leagues will have a difficult chance of making it.

the problem is that I don't disagree with most of you guys about the best leagues not being effected by new leagues closing. All I can say is that I've seen some leagues gone down and some were even good ones with good commishes.

Even the good leagues aren't going to last forever. But it's hard for me to believe they're being driven out by the "doodz join my leeg lol" leagues.
