2-D Graphics

I have never played Championship Manager so when people say 2-D graphics, what are they talking about?

For OOTP, would it be just an overhead view of the field and it shows where the balls are hit?

CM has a picture a field and each player on the field is a circle with his number in the middle of it. The ball is a dot. The players move around, the field and at the top of the screen is the play by play in a large font. It doesn't sound that interesting, but it lets you see the game play out and works really well. If you like text sims CM is the king of them all. I love OOTP, but it has a long way to go to catch up to CM.

I've heard for a long time that CM is the king, but I can't get past the fact that I know nothing about soccer except that you kick a ball into the other teams goal. Because of that, I haven't checked it out.

The CM 2D graphics show an overhead view of the pitch...the players are represented as circles with two small lines protuding from them to show what direction the player is facing and their uniform number within the circle.....the players and ball move about the pitch in a fliud fashion and it is a good representation how your players are positioning themselves..text commentary accompanies the 2D match below the pitch screen..it is much better than when it was only text based as you now have a better idea where your players are when defending and attacking...the text only method always left you wondering where your players were on the pitch and if they are too far upfield or not when a goal is scored.....with the 2D display you now can see the mistakes in positioning and make the necessary adjustments...you have the option of not using the display at all (text only), extended highlights ( the game automatically switches from text to 2D), highlights (increased text, less 2D), or watch the entire 90 minute match in 2D real time........

How this would translate to OOTP I guess would be in a similiar fashion ... the playing field would be seen from an overhead view and the players shown as circles with their uniform numbers within it...the batter, and base runners would also be represented as would tracking the path of the ball...if Markus does consider this, he will obviously need to keep the text only option available, and perhaps have highlights features as well...I know I wouldn't want to use the 2d graphics for a baseball sim much, if at all, because, unlike soccer, there is simply too much static time in a baseball game....

Personally, I think a sim for a baseball game (like OOTP) would be fine without 2D graphics. The text pretty much gives you an accurate feel for the game, much like listening to a game on the radio. If a dazzling defensive play is made, or if a ball is hit hard, the PBP describes it.

Following a game like soccer or hockey is greatly helped by visuals (and thus a 2-d screen in a sim); a hockey game on radio isn`t that great. No matter how good the announcer is, you don`t really have an idea what`s happening behind the play and you basically have to be paying full attention the whole time.

For me, the biggest strength of CM over OOTP is the added immersiveness with all the news and the interaction with players/media/fans, which OOTP somewhat has added (with contract negotiations), but still has a ways to go.

Smart decision, I bought CM 03/04 and I don't care for it because even though I like soccer there is just too much I don't know (in paticular formations and training) to make it anything but a headache.

Now the moment they make one of those with a tactical guide, I'm there.

Derek...Marc Vaughn did a very good tactical guide for CM 01/02...the games are so similiar that the guide is good to use for 03/04 as well...it's a free download so there is no lose in checking it out:

Call me a traditionalist, but as long as the play-by-play is robust enough I would almost certainly turn off any 2-d graphic cabability that worked in the way its described here. Maybe I'm just not visualizing it correctly, but I'm having a hard time seeing what an overhead view of dots moving around brings to the game that isn't vastly better through the pbp/radio broadcast.

If I were king for a day I would put a lot more energy into making pbp even stronger than I would into making dots move.

My .02.

Got to agree with you RonCo, as long as there is some graphic representation of where the players are (runner on first, who playing what possition), it doesn't need a 2d field (this works for baseball and baseball only, any other sport and I probably would want a 2d view)

Oh and thanks JPWagner

I would like for OOTP to implement something the way MLB does now. When there is a game on, go to MLB.com and click on the baseball diamond icon next to a game in progress. This is 2D graphics and a format I'd like to see, as close to it as they can (legally) get.
