OOTP6, CBL Rosters, Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Setup

I will sim two weeks on the game 2-3 times a week.
CPU trade acceptances are set to "hard"

Original Team Analysis

This team needs a lot of work. We have a couple of good young ML players in Huff and Baldelli, as well as a couple of great prospect hitters in the minors. We really lack ML pitching as well as minor league pitchers, so that is something we need to improve through trades. I will be looking to get us some potential stud SP's, even if it means giving up some of our hitters.

Season Goals

We are hoping to get 70 wins this season, as well as getting out of the cellar in the AL East. Another goal of ours is to improve our pitching staff as well as our minor league system.

Trade

Jeremi Gonzalez, Travis Harper, $2,000,000 for Rich Harden

We had to give up a lot here in Gonzalez, our best starter, and Harper, one of our best relievers, as well as most of our remaining money. But, we do feel that Harden is worth all of that. He has the potential to be one of the most dominant pitchers in the league within a couple of years and should provide help at the ML level sometime this season.

A great minor league system, especially the hitting. We have a few solid pitchers, but nobody who looks to be ready to start the season. We'll see how they do for the first part of '04 before we make any moves.

(Anything else about the roster anybody wants to see just let me know and I'll post it ASAP)

DRAYS MAKE BIG SIGNING

Free Agent third baseman Aaron Boone signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Thursday, believed to be in the neighborhood of $1,300,000 for his one season of service. Boone's higher salary was voided by the Yankees after he tore an ACL playing basketball and was believed to be out for the season. Well, it turns out that after the swelling went down the ACL was just sprained, and Boone will be ready to play at the beginning of the season. He should provide great leadership for the youngsters in the clubhouse, and a solid bat in the middle of the lineup for this Devil Rays team. Boone had this to say about the signing. "I haven't had much interest from teams to sign me because they are unsure about my knee, but it's 100% and I decided to come here to Tampa because they are the only team to show that they really want me to play for them. I signed the one year deal so that I can prove to the rest of the league that I am healthy and can put up big numbers. Very happy to be here in Tampa Bay this season and will put forth great effort to help this young team win."

POSITIONAL PREVIEWS

Catcher

Toby Hall, 28 yrs.(ML) - He is about all we have that is capable of producing at the major league level. He has a 5 in contact, and that's about it. He's good at the sacrifice bunt as well, which will be neccessary hitting in the bottom of the lineup. He also packs a little bit of power for a little catcher. He's not very good behind the plate, as he lets by quite a few past balls and doesn't have a great arm.

Brook Fordyce, 33 yrs.(ML) - Nothing more than a backup for if Hall gets injured. He's nearing the end of his career, and can't do much at the plate. He's not very good behind the plate, either.

Pete Laforest, 26 yrs.(AAA) - Nothing special here, just a decent minor leaguer. He has a good arm, and has solid defense behind the plate, so not many balls get past him. He isn't very good on the contact hitting, but he does have more power than our major leaguers, so if we find ourselves lacking homer's later in the year, look for him to get the call and play a few games.

Mitch Melusky, 30 yrs.(AAA) - The thing about him is how weak his arm is. We have yet to see if the guy can get it to 2nd base in any time to get a runner. He isn't very good at protecting balls from getting by him, and he's not much better hitting. He does have a 10 in eye/patience, so that is one bright spot about his game. He has no power or contact whatsoever, so don't expect him to get the call anytime.

Shawn Riggans, 23 yrs.(AA) - He will probably be moving to AAA soon and eventually to the majors. He is great behind the plate and also has a good arm, so not many past balls or steals will be going while hes in the game. His hitting is rather weak, but he does have a decent contact rating and is great with sacrifice bunts.

OVERALL GRADE: C- .. We don't have anything special here, but we do have a couple of guys who will be decent at the ML level, along with a good prospect waiting in the minors. Hey, for this team, C- to start isn't too bad....

First Base

Aubrey Huff, 27 yrs.(ML) - Huff is a solid young player. One of our few bright spots. He has solid contact, along with great power hitting. He also brings a pretty good eye to the plate. He has the ability to play multiple positions, 1B, 3B, and OF, so that makes him even more valuable. He has a great arm, whether he's in the IF or the OF, along with a great glove, no matter what position he's playing.

Tino Martinez, 36 yrs.(ML) - Tino, even at his age, is still a very solid player for us. He will start the season as our DH, but may move to 1B eventually. He has an amazing glove in the field, and doesn't make many errors at all. He has solid contact, and still packs some good power. He should be great to groom Aubrey into a great player, and will be given games off to keep him fresh.

Robert Fick, 30 yrs.(ML) - Fick isn't anything too good, just a decent all-around ballplayer. He has good hitting and decent power, along with a decent eye at the plate. He isn't very good in the field, but isn't too bad, either. He has a horrible arm, as injuries have plagued him and he hasn't been getting much action in the last few years. Look for him to be nothing more than a pinch hitter and possibly get a couple starts at 1B if Tino needs a rest and Aubrey is moved elsewhere.

Eduardo Perez, 34 yrs.(ML) - Let's be real, Perez will get very little playing time on this squad other than pinch hitting. He has a good arm, as long as he's in the infield, and good HR power, but no contact to speak of. He's pretty good in the field at 1B, and also has a good eye.

OVERALL GRADE: B+ .. We have a lot of depth here, but nobody in our minors to eventually come up. Huff leads this group, but with three other solid players on the bench we aren't too worried, as we can afford to move Huff to DH or into the OF if we need to into the season.

Second Base

Rey Sanchez, 36 yrs.(ML) - Sanchez isn't really anything too good, just holding down the fort at 2B until one of our minors is ready to move up. He has a good arm, and a sure glove in the field. He is a decent contact hitter, but possesses no power or patience at all. Also has the talent to play SS just as well as 2nd.

Geoff Blum, 30 yrs.(AAA) - Blum has great versatility, as he plays just about anywhere in the field. Look for him to move up shortly into the season as long as he does a decent job at AAA. He has a great arm, as well as amazing defense in the field. He has average contact and power, which will be an instant improvement over Sanchez once he moves up.

Damian Rolls, 26 yrs.(AAA) - Roles is a sure-handed fielder with an amazing arm. He is very quick on the basepaths, and will surely steal plenty of bases. He has great instincts as well. His power numbers won't be anything special, but he can make good contact with the ball. He should surpass Blum soon and before the season is over he should be up at the ML level.

OVERALL: D .. Nothing Special here, and Rolls is the best of the bunch, still in the minors. If he works his way up improving along the way, hopfully this grade will rise as he does.

Third Base

Aaron Boone, 31 yrs.(ML) - Boone was a great free agent pickup. We don't have many natural 3B on the team, so he was a neccessary pickup. He plays great defense, and has a gun across the infield to first. He will steal double digits this season, and should also hit for average as well as power. He can play other positions as well, 2B and SS are his specialties aside from 3B.

Jared Sandberg, 26 yrs.(AAA) - Sandberg is nothing more than an average ballplayer. If he does make it to the majors, don't expect him to get the starting job. He has power, but lacks the contact hitting. Has an amazing arm, and stellar defense. You'll see him stealing a couple of bases, but nothing amazing.

Fernando Tatis, 29 yrs.(AAA) - Tatis just doesn't have the stuff to play in the major leagues. He has a good arm, but is just an average player in the field. He doesn't hit for average or power, and won't be stealing many bases. He's basically just a player, doesn't excel in anything.

Travis Schlichting, 19 yrs.(A) - Schlichting doesn't get much attention, but he should work his way up through the minors very soon. He's an average contact hitter, but does pack a little bit of power. He has a great throwing arm, and is a pretty sure fielder. He is very slow, however, so don't send him running.

OVERALL: C+ .. Boone alone makes this group decent. But Schlichting is a solid prospect, and Sandberg is decent as well. If Boone is signed to a multi-year deal, this grade will improve.

Shortstop

Julio Lugo, 28 yrs.(ML) - Lugo is a solid allaround player. He will steal a decent amount of bases, along with hitting for decent contact and power. He plays good defense, and has an average arm. With all of the talent at SS in our minors, look for him to be traded before we get too far along here.

Deivi Cruz, 31 yrs.(AAA) - Cruz isn't worth being a longtime starter in the majors. He doesn't have a good arm, and isn't particularly good in the field. He can't hit for average or power, and won't steal many bases. He could be a temporary fillin at the ML level if Lugo is indeed traded.

BJ Upton, 19 yrs.(AA) - Upton is one of our best prospects, the future of the SS position in the franchise. He is amazing in the field, you will rarely see him commit an error, and possesses blazing speed. He will be up in the leaders among steals once he gets into the bigs. He can hit for average, and his only downside could be his lack of power. Look for him to breeze through the minors very fast.

Aneudi Cuevas, 22 yrs.(A) - Cuevas isn't very good at the hitting quite yet, but his fielding and throwing are ML ready. He is very fast, and will get to about any ball that's near him. He also uses that speed to get many bases on the paths. He will probably have to play 2B if he ever wants to reach the majors with Upton ahead of him, though the possibility of being traded is quite high.

OVERALL GRADE: B- .. Lugo has the ML tied down for now, and with two great prospects in the minors on their way up, the SS position looks pretty good in Tampa.

Keep me updated on Josh Hamilton... I used to cover him some when he was a high school player in Raleigh... I covered a game where he no-hit the conference champs in a rival league... He was bringing the heat! Hate to see some of the bad news surrounding the real Josh these days... Hope the OOTP Josh does better...

Outfield

LF- Carl Crawford, 22 yrs.(ML) - Crawford will lead off for the DRays this season, and expect him to steal a ton. His speed is amazing, and his stealing ability is great too. He has good contact hitting, and although he lacks power, its really not neccessary since he can steal the extra bases. He's surehanded out in left field, and has a good arm.

CF- Rocco Baldelli, 22 yrs.(ML) - Baldelli is just an amazing prospect. He has great contact, and solid power as well. He will steal plenty of bases, as his speed is comparable to that of Crawford. He can play all three OF positions greatly, and has a cannon from the field. His only downside is his poor eye at the plate, but expect him to work at that and improve.

RF- Jose Cruz, 29 yrs.(ML) - Cruz is the old man in the outfield, and probably won't be around for long. We have some solid RF in the minors, and they will be ready to compete at the ML level by the end of the season. Cruz has nice power, and will hit for contact once in a while. He's a pretty good base stealing as well for how slow he is.

--Waiting in the Minors, OF--

Jonny Gomes, LF, 23yrs. Gomes is a 3 star prospect with solid contact and power as well as amazing speed. He's very similar to our current LF, Carl Crawford.

Josh Hamilton, RF, 22 yrs. Hamilton is a 3 1/2 star prospect with good speed, power, and contact. He will move into the ML by the end of the year with any luck, replacing Cruz.

Joey Gomes, LF, 24 yrs. Joey, the older brother of Jonny, is out to prove that he is better than his little bro. His playing style is very similar to his brother, except many think his brother has a little more potential to be great, while Joey will be just a decent ballplayer.

OVERALL GRADE: B+ .. Very solid, very young, very talented. Waiting in the minors are more talented players.

Starting Pitchers

Victor Zambrano, 28 yrs.(ML) - Unfortunately, Zambrano is our ace. He would be well-served as a #4 starter in the league, but won't be able to carry the load as the #1. He has good endurance, and could win a gold glove someday, but he lacks control of his pitches.

Damian Moss, 27 yrs.(ML) - Moss is at best an average player. He has decent stuff, very bad control, and okay movement. He's solid in the field, but has low endurance as well as a lower velocity. Hopefully he won't be our #2 man for long.

Mark Hendrickson, 29 yrs.(ML) - Hendrickson is a decent pitcher, but his main weakness is that he doesn't have very good stuff. He gets good movement on the ball, and brings decent endurance, but his velocity is pretty low. He has great control on his pitches as well.

Paul Abbott, 36 yrs.(ML) - Abott shouldn't be playing at the major league level anymore. His stats are way down, and he has no control over his pitches anymore. He still has good stuff and movement on his pitches, and his velocity is still pretty good. He will play pretty good in the field, however, so that will help out his cause.

Todd Ritchie, 32 yrs.(ML) - Ritchie has some good aspects to his game, and then some that are just horrible. He has good control over his pitches, as well as decent movement and great endurance. He doesn't have very good stuff, and he isn't exactly great in the field either. He gets great velocity on his pitches.

--Waiting in the Minors,SP--

Rich Harden - 3 1/2 star SP prospect, received in our first trade. He has the stuff to be dominant at the big league level.

Jon Switzer - 3 1/2 star SP prospect, has great movement on his pitches. His velocity is a little low, but that can be improved once he reaches the majors.

Seth McClung - 3 1/2 star SP prospect, has amazing velocity, often reaching 100 MPH. He has good stuff, but lacks the control to compete in the majors quite yet.

Dewon Brazelton - 3 1/2 star SP prospect, has great endurance and solid velocity. Still very lacking in control and movement, but he will work on those in the minors and should be ready for the majors in a couple of seasons.

OVERALL: C- .. This grade would be even lower, but we have great minor leaguers in our system. Our ML players are horrible, they aren't worthy of starting on any team, but soon we should be better as a couple of our guys get ML ready.

Relief Pitchers

Chad Gaudin, 21 yrs.(ML) - 4 star prospect. Has great movement on his pitches, as well as good stuff and control. He should be a dominant force in our bullpen for years.

Al Reyes, 33 yrs.(ML) - 4 star reliever. Has great stuff and movement. Lacks control on his pitches. Solid player in the field, and has a good arm. His velocity is a little low as well.

Lance Carter, 29 yrs.(ML) - Carter has great control, but lacks the stuff to become a dominant reliever. He should be a solid reliever, but does lack the velocity to be a closer.

Danny Baez, 26 yrs.(ML) - Baez has great stuff, and huge velocity, all of the makings of a great closer. He has decent control on his pitches, although could use a little more if he wants to be a solid closer. Baez also gets amazing movement on his pitches, consistantly baffling hitters. He also displays good judgement in the field, as he has a great glove and a strong arm.

--Waiting in the Minors,RP--

Bobby Seay, 25 yrs.(AAA) - Bobby has great stuff, as well as good velocity on his pitches. He has decent control for a middle reliever, as well as good movement on his pitches. His weakness is out in the field, where he will rarely help himself out with the glove. He is pretty good at the sacrifice bunt when he gets to the plate.

OVERALL: C- .. We are just one or two good guys away from getting this up to B range. Another long relief guy and possibly a setup man are needed for this squad.

That's the original roster preview. Hoped you enjoyed that. Please feel free to comment on all of my posts thus far. I will sim the first two weeks shortly.

SIM #1

I completed the first two weeks of simming, and the results are surprising!!

Record: 4-3, 4th in AL East, 1.5 Games Back

Sim: 4-3

Roster Update:

Carl Crawford - 2 SB
Rocco Baldelli - .423 AVE
Aubrey Huff - .393 SLG
Jose Cruz - 3 RBI
Julio Lugo - .583 OPS
Aaron Boone - 4 SB
Toby Hall - .231 AVE
Rey Sanchez - 3 RBI

Starters-
1. Victor Zambrano - 1 Win
2. Damian Moss - 4.35 ERA
3. Mark Hendrickson - 1.00 ERA, CG
4. Paul Abbott - 6.00 ERA
5. Todd Ritchie - No IP

John Halama - 15.00 ERA
Al Reyes - 1 Win
Bartolome Fortunato - 3.00 ERA
Lance Carter - 1 Win
Danny Baez - 2 Saves

TEAM BATTING AVERAGE: .252
TEAM EARNED RUN AVERAGE: 5.37

Those two stats above show that obviously our team isn't running on all cylinders, so I am very happy that our team still has a 4-3 record. Our team has performed decently on offense, led by the combonation of Boone and Baldelli. We lead the majors with 10 stolen bases, so that helps out of overall production. The pitching staff was led by Moss and Hendrickson, who both had good outings, and the bullpen did good for the talent in it, except for Halama's bad outing.

Minor League Report

Damian Rolls(AAA) - Hit .414 with 8 RBI over the first two weeks of the season. Look for him to be called up to the bigs if he continues this for another 2-3 sims.

Matt Diaz(AAA) - Hit .444 with 2 HR and 6 RBI over the first two weeks. He won't be getting the call at all this season, but he should help out the AAA squad.

Delmon Young(A) - Hit .519 over the first two weeks, as was expected of the great young prospect. Look for him to be promoted soon if he continues this production.

Scott Autrey(AA) - Autrey had a horrible first start in AA. He pitched bad, and ended the game with an ERA of over 13.00. If he stuggles in his next few starts, watch to see if he is demoted to A ball.

I'll add standings when I return home Sunday night before sim 2. I'll be sure to add them in every sim and to update you guys on the tendencies if i change any.. Would anyone like for me to do a player watch similar to the Josh Hamilton one on another player? I'll do whatever players that get requested.

Our offense has really been doing great, as the average is up nearing the .300 mark. Crawford, Baldelli and Huff have been doing great, as usual. Aaron Boone has been having a rough couple of weeks, and surprisingly, Ray Sanchez, 2B fillin waiting for some help, has been very solid as well.

Minor League Report

Jason Standridge(AA) - Standridge pitched brilliantly in A, so we gave him the move up to AA. He went 1-1 in 3 starts at A, and had an ERA of 0.93 along with 22 K's.

BJ Upton(AAA) - Upton earned the trip up to AAA despite his young age. He hit .303 with a homer and 7 RBI along with 7 stolen bases in AA, amazing the management and scouts. He could earn a spot on the 40 man roster and play in the majors in September.

Josh Hamilton(AAA) - Hamilton lived up to expectations for the first month, getting the nod to AAA. He hit great in AA, batting .338 along with 3 home runs and 12 runs batted in. He ended up with 3 stolen bases as well.

PROMOTIONS/DEMOTIONS
