A batter is up to the plate with a man on 2nd base. The hitter hits it out to right field who throws home to try and catch the runner out but the throw will not be in time and is cut off. They then turn it to 2B where the hitter is heading and he's called safe. He is given a single. I know if he was thrown out he would have just been credited with a single but as he was safe why isn't this a double?

It is related to a fielder's choice. The batter is credited with a single and advances to second on a fielders choice to throw home.

Heh, I remember this was a problem in the first version of Earl Weaver Baseball. Guys were constantly getting credit for doubles on this type of play.
