CJBL 1st round tourney results
Tourney
McCovey Region News and Notes: Three stunning pitching performances dominate the McCovey Region first round news. Aside from Cleveland's John Martin pitching into the eighth and allowing just one earned run, Toronto's Bert Blyleven and Detroit's Jack Morris each threw complete game shutouts. Blyleven held the Red Legs potent offense to just two hits while striking out seven in his shutout bid. He was supported by a pair of Tony Gwynn homers accounting for four of the Jays seven runs. Morris allowed only one hit with eleven strikeouts against the Phillies as both Morris and Phillie pitcher Dennis Eckersley pitched complete games. Two homers, a two run blast by Lyman Bostock and a solo one from Dave Henderson, gave the Tigers the late game runs they needed to win 4-0. In round two, Detroit plays San Diego, who still has decided to go with Randy Jones as their starter. The Blue Jays will face the Indians in an Ed Whiston v. Alan Wirth matchup. Robinson Region News and Notes: The Yankees and Dodgers engaged in a pitching duel with Andy Replogle and Mike Bacsik pitching no hitters through four innings. With Bacsik taking his no-hit bid into the sixth, the Yanks tried a little small ball with Ron Roenickie stealing second after his single and then advancing to third on Replogle's bunt single. The move worked when German Barranca grounded into a double play. Later in the inning, a Tony Armas double brought home the pitcher and Chet Lemon for the 3-0 lead. The Dodgers answered right away with a three run homer from Sixto Lezcano to tie the game and the game winning run coming off a Juan Samuel sac fly. Three scoreless inning by the Dodger bullpen held onto to the win with a save going to Bill Caudill. The unlikely bat of Jack Brohamer provided a three run boost as part of a five run fourth in a runaway victory for the Cubs over the Angels. Chicago pitcher Dave Rozema skated through seven innings, allowing only one run. Chicago scored nine runs on ten hits, but used six walks to add to the base runner total for the 9-1 win. In round two, Los Angeles will face Jim Otten of the Astros. In the other game, Minnesota should have to run up against Mario Soto. Yaz Region News and Notes: A first inning triple by Gil Flores followed by a sac fly gave the Mets a quick 1-0 lead against the Mariners. The fun ended there. Seattle scored six runs on seven hits off Ron Guidry ending any hopes the Mets had of pulling an upset. Jeff Heathcock pitched a complete game scattering eight hits and allowing two runs. Howard Johnson and Al Cowans homered for Seattle, and Alex Trevino picked up three hits. For the Mets, Gil Flores scored twice on Broderick Perkins RBIs for their only runs of the game. Fernando Valenzuela held the Orioles to just two runs, both scored in the fourth, as the Braves advanced by the score of 5-2. Jim Rice and Dave Winfield hit solo home runs late in the game to extend a 3-2 lead. Atlanta also received some good bench play, as Rodney Scott had two RBI and scored a run, and Jim Essian, playing for Dale Murphy, drove in a run in his 2-4 day. Pittsburgh hopped out to a 6-0 lead by the sixth inning, but had to hang on tight to preserve the win. Veteran outfielder, Bernie Carbo homebred for a quick 2-0 lead in the first. Rickey Henderson homered in the third and Mickey Hatcher drilled a two run single to cap the Pirate scoring at six. With Vida Blue on the mound the Brewers couldn't get anything started till the sixth when they scored a pair of runs. With the game 6-3 in the ninth Cecil Cooper homered cutting the gap to two, but John Henry Johnson finished off the final outs seeding the Pirates into the second round. In round two, the Pirates face the NL Champs, the Montreal Expos and Milt Wilcox. The Braves will try Dave Stewart against Jim Beattie or Joe Hesketh of the Mariners. Aaron Region News and Notes: The Kansas City Royals needed just four hits and a walk to jump up 4-0 on the San Francisco Giants' pitcher Pat Underwood before the third out of the first inning. Staked to a big lead early, Royal pitcher Joe McIntosh started his game with five scoreless innings and enjoyed a little added run support late in the game in the Royals' 7-2 win over the Giants. Gary Ward's two run homer in the first stood as the game's biggest hit. Butch Wynegar backed him up with a two RBI night of his own. The Red Sox opened with a four run first scoring four runs on an error, a walk and four singles. Unlike KC, the Sox struggled to hold the lead as the Washington Senators came back to get one in the second and three in the third. Butch Hobson tied up the game at four with a two-run double. The Sox could not be denied though, scoring twice off Doyle Alexander on a pair of RBI doubles, one by Brett Butler, the other by Biff Pocoroba. Boston's bullpen finished off the story with four scoreless innings. Steve Bedrosian came up big with a pair of shutout innings after the Senators tied the game. He was credited with the win. The Sox advance to play the White Sox, who could start any number of talented pitchers. In the other game, Oakland is leaning towards Phil Huffman to face the Royals' Rickey Horton. |
