Boxing

Just curious, I used to box as a teenager...just wondering, who else out there has...I mean, I have no idea who I could be speaking to here.

I boxed in the PAL (Police Athletic League) for 3 years as a teenager in Utah, then when I went into the Army for about another 8 Months.....The competition level was higher there so I finally gave it up to get on to the more important and boring aspects of Life, beyond taking leather to the Face.

Back then (late 70's early 80's) there seemed to be a much greater degree of participation by young people, in part I think because boxing got so much more exposure on network TV. i often remember watching Fights featuring guys like Danny Little Red Lopez, Mancini, Arguello, Pryor and of course Leaonard, Hearns and Hagler on free TV and it actually kept us riveted. You just would not see that now, and though my Children can name many participants in mixed Martial arts, (they are big into Karate and Grappling) I think any of them would be hard pressed to name more than 2-3 Boxers that are active today....kinda sad!

Lee, I'm right with you...I grew up in the same era watching the same fights and fighters on network TV...the good old days. I boxed and thought I might enter golden gloves but one day I took a right cross on the button and felt like a bolt of lighting went through me(I did win however) plus I had seven stitches and realized it wasn't going to work out...oh, well

As for boxing coverage today...please, we get what, Friday night fights? Big deal. The occasional cable fight cards and pay per view...Definately NOT the golden age...

It's very interesting the factors that made boxing so popular in the 50s. In those days TVs had 6-8 inch screens, making it difficult to watch football and other team sports. Boxing however was something they could zoom in on an have a reasonable image on those small sets. As a result there was an abundance of boxing on television, and little else to compete for the sports minded TV viewer's time. This indirectly results in a golden age again 20 years later because many of the children who grew up watching boxing frequently become boxers, far more than would have become boxers without this golden age of TV boxing existing.

It's a lot different now, brother.

More people listened to it on the radio than watched it on TV's, which is how I think you might be able to target folks once again.

Put it on the radio! At least Hawke and Cap will be happy. . .and so would I.

By the way---everyone who grew up in Pittsburgh boxed at some point or time in his life. I don't know where the gyms are now, but they used to have neighboorhood gyms all over the place.

Some good fighters too, of course, have come out of Pittsburgh.

I remember when amateur boxing was huge out here on LI. There were clubs everywhere. Now, I think there's only my old club, with exception to the PAL, that focus on amateurs. It's too bad beacause it really did bring kids from different walks of life together. I boxed for about 20 years. Still train a bit, but haven't been in the ring in quite some time.

I too, would love to see (hear) fights come back to radio.

Boxing on the radio LOL

Its Farr again boxing beautiful, holding Louis off with that left hand.

Louis still coming forward, stalking Farr.

Louis explodes with a blistering volley of combinations

The British Champion is staggering, as Louis tries to finish Farr off here in the 10th round.

He is DOWN ------ Farr is DOWN ------ the whole stadium is up on its feet.

Those were the days Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Cap withdrew his ancient leather clasp purse from his watch pocket, opened it carefully, swatting away the escaping moth, and peered into the shadowy depths. In a scratchy voice tinged with annoyance, he croaked,"Radio broadcasts on VD, eh? How much is it then? If it's more than three pounds ten, you'll just have to go elsewhere."

He replaced his wallet and rubbed his great blob of a nose, broken many times during his days as a pugilist, and reached for the dial of his big Phillips radio. "What the heck station is that fight on? Buckwheat, get me my radio guide, and fetch me a cold rootbeer!"

Pitt Panther.... you gave me a laugh. I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and guess what? I fought as an amature. Just curious? How guilty does Spadofora look? and is there any word on when a trial may take place.

When i was a young man back in the late 50s, most young men worked in big factories in there local town. Nearly ever factory had a boxing club. There were also a great number of ex servicemen's clubs who ran boxing teams. We had very little money, so one of the things quite a lot of us did were take up boxing. The competition of course was not that great at that level .
I also used to box for an amateur club for a short while as well. But my first love was football (soccer ) i think those from USA call it. But although i had trials for a couple of lower pro clubs i was not good enough if i am honest to make the grade as a footballer.

Spadafora looks way guilty as they have him on videotape shooting his girlfriend! Well, at least that's what has been said.

Obviously he shot her, but there seems to be some question as to whether or not she will testify against him, hence the videotape from the conveinence store. As far as I'm aware there is no word on a trial date.

Anyway, Welcome aboard! It's always nice to see fellow Pittsburghers around. I believe "Mel Turnbow" is also from Pittsburgh.

I fought as a welterweight in high school, Police Athletic League, Boston area, late 1970s. A natural right-hander, I fought southpaw and jabbed the crap out of unschooled opponents. Decent speed, footwork defense, no power, tendency to cut. Not much of a future. When 147 was no longer tenable (I had a 17-inch neck as a 16-pound welterweight) I gave it up. In my last fight, I took an a heavily muscled Dominican who had no skills but was strong with heavy, heavy hands. He butted me and opened me up good. Swore it off when I got to college.
