Leagues using FA compensation

Are there any leagues that classify qualifying players into FA classes for compensation?

Something along the lines of "a C hit .280 with 24 HRs and 91 RBIs...Class A FA"

" A RF hits .292 with 28 HRs and 94 RBIs...Class B FA"

The reason the RF is less compensation with even BETTER stats than the C is because MLB places its emphasis on POSITION for compensation first (before stats). A C who puts up those numbers might be the best C statistically in the league. Class A FA. A RF who has a solid year, even better than the best C, is only a Class B because 5 other RFs had much better years.

Anyway, just wanted to see if a league has tried this and how they handle it etc.

I've seen leagues do it but based the variable on the amount of the contract the player signed with the new team

My league for the first 3 seasons did it by clumps of gold star ratings (4-5 for Type A, 3-3.5 for Type B, 2.5 for Type C, and slightly different for relievers/closers). We're currently working on constructing a new and more in-depth method of classification, using a calculation of stats from the previous season, the player ratings, and possibly contract amount. There were too many flaws with the old system.

Funny you mention this the BBL (Burows Baseball League) has just started a new restricted FA system:

Restricted Free Agent/Marked Player(New for 2005):
Each team will be permitted to select one player who will become a free agent to become a restricted free agent. The team that signs the RFA will be forced to compensate the team losing the player with draft picks according to the total value of the contract signed. The table goes as follows:

< $2,000,000: 5th Round Pick
$2,000,001 - 4,000,000: 4th Round Pick
$4,000,001 - 8,000,000: 3rd Round Pick
$8,000,001 - 12,000,000: 2nd Round Pick
$12,000,001 - 20,000,000: 1st round Pick
$20,000,001 - 25,000,000: 1st Round Pick + 7th Round Pick
$25,000,001 - 30,000,000: 1st Round Pick + 6th Round Pick
$30,000,001 - 35,000,000: 1st Round Pick + 5th Round Pick
$35,000,001 - 40,000,000: 1st Round Pick + 4th Round Pick
$40,000,001 - 45,000,000: 1st Round Pick + 3rd Round Pick
$45,000,001 - 50,000,000: 1st Round Pick + 2nd Round Pick
$50,000,001 - 60,000,000: 2x 1st Round Picks
$60,000,001 - 65,000,000: 2x 1st Round Picks + 7th Round Pick
$65,000,001 - 70,000,000: 2x 1st Round Picks + 6th Round Pick
$70,000,001 - 75,000,000: 2x 1st Round Picks + 5th Round Pick
$75,000,001 - 80,000,000: 2x 1st Round Picks + 4th Round Pick
$80,000,001 - 85,000,000: 2x 1st Round Picks + 3rd Round Pick
$85,000,001 - 90,000,000: 2x 1st Round Picks + 2nd Round Pick
$90,000,001 and up: 3x 1st Round Picks

These awards are non-negotiable, and the picks will be the earliest possible that are owned by a team at that time. If a team has acquired picks from another team, those will also be awarded if required.

Quote:
(Ex: RFA signs 5 Year, 20 Million/year contract with Team A. Team B is awarded 3x 1st round picks. Team A has their 2005 1st round pick and 2005 1st Round pick from team C. Team B would be awarded both of those selections + 2006 1st round pick from team A.)

The picks will be transferred immediately, so if Team A acquires a 1st Rd pick after forfeiting the required picks to Team B, then they can keep all picks they acquire from that point on.

Players Eligible to be "tagged" as Restricted Free Agents:

To be eligible to tag a player as an RFA, they must be on a team's roster on or before May 1 of the current season. Any players acquired May 2 or later are not eligible to be tagged as RFAs. If a player has been tagged, but is traded later in the season, that tag is rescinded by the trading team, and the team trading the tagged player loses the right to place the tag on another player. Once the "tag" is placed on a player, the team may not change the "tag" to another player under any circumstance.

Deadline for "Tagging" RFA players:

The deadline to "tag" a player as an RFA is September 1st. Any teams not using this designation on a player on or before this date lose the right to designate a player as "tagged" for that season.

"Tagged" Players resigning with team placing "Tag":

If a "tagged" player resigns with the team that placed the "tag" on him, no compensation will be awarded whatsoever.

After an RFA is signed:
All Restricted Free Agents, upon signing with a team, incur an automatic no-trade clause in the first year of their new contract, and as well may not be demoted to the minor leagues under any circumstances in his first year of the new contract.

If a "Tagged" player is not signed in the offseason:
These rules will apply to all Restricted Free Agents, even if they do not sign during the Off-Season Free Agent Period. The tag will remain until the following offseason, in which the player will have lost the tag for the following offseason, regardless of whether the tagging team tagged another player for that season or not. If a tagged player signs during the season following the one that he was "tagged", compensation must still be awarded

MBL Reloaded (IMO the best on the net, and in anyones opinion that ever stepped across it the most realistic league on the net) uses the actual compensation system used in MLB.

majorbaseballleague.com

check out the league agreement and that will tell you how the financial's are handled.
