The PABA: Rewriting the Baseball Encyclopedia
Hello! Thanks for reading the tale of the Professional American Baseball Association. The PABA is an alternate history league. The first season will be 1871, and I'll be using real players. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to post.
HAS GREED RUINED OUR PASTIME? New Profeesional Base Ball Association to Start In Cincinnati eight entrepreneurs meet and agreed upon the formation of a profeesional base ball association. Inspired by the barnstorming success of the Cincinnati Reds, players have decided to sell their efforts. It seems to this writer that greed has grabbed hold of yet another American institution. What is the world coming to when men are paid $2,000 to play a game? Alas, there may be hope. To earn their keep players must abide by a set of guidelines that prohibit such acts as throwing games, fighting, and consuming alcohol while playing. The first season will see eight clubs take the field. They will represent two "leagues." Each club will play a thirty game schedule, at the conclusion of which, the two teams who lead their leagues will meet in a best two-out of-three "World Series." The Tymes, VI, Issue II
The Base Ball Tymes, Volume I, Isuue II
Season Preview 1871 American League (Listed in predicted order of finish) Boston Red Stockings The Stockings from Beantown are lead by their pitcher, Mr. Albert Spalding. Mr. Spalding is only 20 years of age and looks to command a bright future. At the plate the Red Stockings have 2B Albert Reach and CF Fred Treacey. This is a club to be reckoned with. Louisville Grays The Grays may have one of the leagues top line-ups, but their success may hinge on 18 year old P Bill Stearns. Stearns is a young right hander from Washington. The Grays used their second round pick on him so we think this lad may be one to watch. Philadelphia Quakers This team will place fear in opposing pitchers. With players Ross Barnes and Fergy Malone on the line-up card, the Quakers will score runs, but like the Grays, pitching may be the key to a Quaker pennant. Chicago White Stockings The Windy City Stockings have a bright future with men like P Zettlein, 1B Pike, and C White. They could compete but a lack of offense may do them in. ... Preview Continued
National League (Listed in predicted order of finish)
Cincinnati Red Legs The Red Legs are a strong club lead by first overall pick Levi Meyerle. "Long Levi" is one of many stars who should lead the Red Legs to a winning season. New York Nationals The Nationals of New York are anything but a sure thing. While most cranks have them for a losing year, we say not so. While their roster may not have a lot of stars, we think that with good contribution from everyone they will suprise. Pitcher Rynie Wolters is the team's big star. Brooklyn Atlantics This club is a pitchers nightmare! The Atlantics picked up many a skilled batsman in the draft. Yet, like several AL teams, their season may ride on the pitching staff. Dick McBride and 19 year old Bobby Mathews could make or break the Atlantic's year. Buffalo Bison As the draft unfolded base ball men in all parts wondered what the Bison were thinking when they selected four rightfielders. Perhaps they should have focused on distributing the talent more evenly. Last edited by goroyals; 01-17-2004 at 09:09 AM. |

The Tymes, VI, Issue III
The Base Ball Tymes, Volume I, Issue III
1871 World Series Preview- Chicago White Stockings vs. New York Nationals The 1871 regular season has drawn to a close. The time has come for the first ever World Series! Chicago The Stockings were led all season by their first-sacker, Lip Pike. Pike (.428, 9, 41) was helped on offense by Count Sensenderfer (.392, 2, 37) and Deacon White (.387, 0, 23). George Zettlein finished 20-10. New York Rynie Wolters proved to be the life-blood of the Gotham club this season. Wolters (19-11, 2.99) proved time and time again that this team would not be stopped. He didn't do it alone however, with Andy Leonard (.382, 1, 24) and Bob "Death to Flying Things" Ferguson (.357, 1, 31) contributing as the main offense threats. Our Choice: We like the Stockings in three. |

The World Series Wire- Game 1
New York Shocks Chicago!!!
White Stockings cranks leaving Union Grounds were not in a delightful mood. Their club fell 21-4 to the Gotham team of the National League. The Nationals were lead by "Death to Flying Things" Ferguson who had three hits and two runs. Rynie Wolters had a nice outing, and he was assisted by a superb Nationals defense who didn't miss a ball all afternoon. Lip Pike went 4 for 4 and was Chicago's lone bright spot. Tommorow the Stockings face a do-or-die game. Consult the boxed score for further results. |

Don't think the PABA is dead, I'm just having some problems with the file. As soon as it's fixed things will return to normal.
