Can I bother you guys with a question?

I haven't bought this game yet, I've just toyed with the demo, but I can't determine if it serves my purposes.

What I want to be able to do is play the 2004 season right along with the actual season when it starts, simming the games each day as they are really played, matching the rosters, line-ups, pitching match-ups, etc. So how would I go about doing that?

Say I buy the game, it comes with fictional players, so I'll have to download the 2003 stats from that "Lehman" site or whatever, right? Then I'll have to manually shuffle around the players that have been traded to new teams to match the current rosters, no big deal. But do these stats that I get from that Lehman site also take care of updating the players ability ratings, or will I have to do that manually too?

Would I use the "create historical league" or the "standard league" function? And I won't need the minor leagues or drafts, just the ability to play the games each day of the 2004 season. I gather I can just turn off the options for all that other fantasy stuff. Also, will I have to manually enter the 2004 schedule, or can I download that somewhere?

Is that an accurate take on what would be involved, or is there anything I should know before I buy the game? Do you think it will be good for what I want to do?

Thanks very much to anyone for taking the time to respond.

Its a solid game, a definite worth buying. Rather than do the Lahman database, you could download a user generated roster set that would be up to date. There are a couple people working on sets as we speak and some should be ready before Opening Day.

You'd download one of those, follow the read me file included (which will essentially tell you to cut and paste the file to your game) and do it that way.

This is exactly the way I play the game, it works great, the only hassle is if you don't have a newspaper that has the box scores in it. You can obviously get them online at espn.com or mlb.com or many other sites but IMHO that takes alot longer than just having the newspaper right in front of you to look at. The other thing that takes a little bit of time is when someone gets called up to the majors that may not be in your game yet. You have to create them and depending how real you want that person to be you may have to do some research on them.

Ah, I didn't think about new players, and that brings to mind the issue of injuries also. I guess I'd have to disable the injuries in OOTP (I assume I can do that) and keep track of them in reality and update rosters accordingly.

Thanks for your insights, guys.

that's correct, you have to also of course make sure you own every team so you can turn the player editor on to add an injury to a player.
