Florida Al Jones
There has been discussion on other threads here regarding Al Jones.
His Absorb Punishment shows as 2; surely that's an error. Or do you think that is intended to reflect him quitting fights when his hand was broken? Doesn't sound right to me, so what do you guys think an appropriate number should be? Looking over his record, I see he only "quit" in his last fight and was never stopped otherwise. I'd be tempted to give him an 8 or even a 9. Also his hitting power is only 2 and he had a decent KO percentage. That seemed a tad low, but now that I think about it, perhaps that could reflect his hand injuries as the game can't really simulate specific fighters being prone to hand injuries (or can it?). Your Thoughts?

A 2 in absorbs punishment is a great rating. The lower the number the better. I don't think it will let you give an 8 or 9 for this but if you did the fight would be stopped after he was hit with about 4 punches. I haven't looked at his record and I do feel a lot of fighters are given too low an HP but you have to look at who he's been KO'ing to see if he deserves better. Gus

Whoops, total brain freeze. I was accumulating data on several fighters and must have got loopy for a minute. Geez, I've only been playing the game for ten years or so.
Thanks Gus and by the way, I occasionally disagree agree with your opinions, (especially re: Holmes), but I find that you're one of the most knowledgable posters here. I figure as long as you've been watching the fight game and as well-thought -out as most of your posts are, you've got every right to think Holmes was overrated. And even though the majority here disagree with you, at least you've made me rethink my own opinion on Larry. I still think he's top 10, but I'm glad there's guys like you here to stir the pot without being holier than thou about it. The situation reminds me of guys like Newt Gingrich, George Will and maybe even Pat Buchanan, whose politics generally nauseate me. However, they are usually well-informed and honest in their beliefs that I can agree to disagree with them and still have respect for them. On the other hand, people like Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and that ilk turn me off completely as I find them way too overbearing and one-sided. Of course, they're just entertainers in my opinion, so...... Anyway, Gus, there's a compliment in there somewhere. On another thread, I started a similar rant way off the boxing track, so I guess you guys are just gonna have to get used to me. Funny thing is, I've never got on a political forum or any other site and ranted about anything. Frankly, the older I get ,the more disgusted I am with politics and have to really motivate myself to vote anymore. 100 times on the blackboard: I should only talk boxing here. I should only talk boxing here. I should only......

Has anyone here ever seen Florida Al Jones fight? I understand that there is no film of him...quite unusual for a top-ten heavyweight in the TV era...
Bob By the way, he's "Florida" Al Jones to distinguish him from "Memphis" Al Jones, a far inferior fighter (who had one big fluke win -- over Boone Kirkman, I think -- who was a contemporary. The two Al Joneses actually fought each other, which wpuld have been an announcer's nightmare! Bob |

JCFLA,
I think I got caught up in one of my posts and turned to politics too. My real feeling about politicians is; liberal or conservative they're all gonna lie, there going to say what they think you want to hear. They're going to support the programs they have friends in. We the public will still be in the place no matter who's running the show. The economy has a cycle it doesn't matter who's in power donkey or elephant. Enough of that. Holmes was a good HW. He had a great left jab and a solid right. He was a decent man, never in trouble. He never looked to be in great shape which is where I think his suspect chin comes from. A suspect chin has a lot to do with legs and neck. A guy with strong legs and a strong neck will usually have a good chin. Holmes always came into a fight looking like a pear. He did always show good heart in getting up though, I give him credit for that. Let me stop talking about Holmes. I have a lot of friends that read the posts but don't post themselves and they tell me I give him too much credit on this forum. Gus

The tough thing about figuring Holmes is he made a lot of nobodies look good but eventually beat them. Like Louis, he got knocked down some, but got up and won. Wish he had given Witherspoon another shot.

Bob,
That's exactly why my view of Holmes differs from many posters on this sight. Most of my boxing fan friends have this same opinion and when we used to watch his fights together I remember how we all used to comment. It would go something like "look at those shots this guy _______ (fill in the name) Zanon, Berbick, Snipes, Evangelista etc. is getting in, Holmes looks lost, this bum is gonna beat him". Of course Holmes would eventually get a shot in and turn the tide. I understand why if you look at Holmes' record he looks great because all those fights went down as victories, but I remember the lost look on his face during those fights while he was making bums look great. There I go again jumping all over poor Larry. Yeah poor Larry as I'm shleping off to work everyday from 9-5 while he lays back in his mansion.
