FPS Converter

A long while back, before I spent 6 months converting my FPS league to OOTP manually, the higherups at OOTP (or was it 400 Studios?) promised that an FPS Converter was being worked on. Now this is obviously even more of an obsolete notion than it was (if it was then) when I originally proposed it. And I no longer need one.

That being said, I realized today that it never came about. Which would be fine except some of us ol' hardcore FPS'rs had been told it was being worked on. Perhaps a white lie for you OOTP groupies, but nonetheless a lie. OOTP staff should've had the scruples to either keep saying no if they never intended to do it, or, if they did initially plan it, at least 'fess up and say those plans were scrapped.

Is this major? No. But something I realized which I didn't appreciate.

The utility was being looked at, and some preliminary work had been done. I wouldn't call it a "lie" as much as the fact it fell by the wayside due to other, more critical, issues.

I would also question the word "promise". I think it fair to say here that no one from OOTP has "ever" promised anything. This is the same issue that came up with the list of "proposed" enhancements for the new version 5 last year - if they didn't make it in, then some claimed it was "promised".

The biggest issue here is that it's difficult, if not impossible, to remember all the items we may have mentioned were being looked at and/or considered - and then ALSO remembering to tell everyone otherwise if our priorities change.

Cut us a bit of slack, ok ?

Fair enough. My use of "promise" was in error.

And I'm not faulting you guys like this should've been Priority #1. I just remembered it today and felt put off that it just disappeared without further explanation. I didn't realize this happened a lot. I guess I just felt like I was Yessed to get me to shut up.

So level with me, how much was ever done with respect to an FPS Converter?

I believe Steve and Markus had one or two individuals familiar with FPS look into the file formats. Somewhere in the board discussions at the time, it became clear that the conversion was more difficult than thought - in fact, there was an amusing situation where a board member actually did "promise" a converter... what was it called... anyone out there ?

Since I was not involved directly, I can't say I know any more details - but I do remember the agreement to look at it, and the following concern about its complexity. I mainly wanted to dispell the "promise" comment since it struck so close to home and V6 is due out in a few months, so I didn't want that level of thinking to grab hold again

The only one who can address this question is the person(s) who worked on this. I originally did research on the number of leagues apparently still using BBPro and their web sites. I then passed this info on. After that I do not know much except that Markus did look into it, but to what degree and what conclusions where drawn I do not know. I'm not going to interrupt his work on v6 to ask him either.

This was supposed to be a converter / link with HH Baseball.
And I'm still waiting for the file layout of HH. hahaha. What a joke.

Thx Sox, good times. Some notable quotes:
Joe Stallings (.400/OOTP): "We are definitely looking into this, and I *think* it will happen! We will keep everyone posted."

Joe Stallings (.400/OOTP): "... all I can tell is you is that it is on Markus' radar. He told me that he could probably build the thing in a few hours (!), plus, we have a lot of the source code for the data files. So as soon as he can find a few hours, he will put it together. I would suspect that the converter would be part of the enhancement update for OOTP4 that Markus has planned for sometime over the summer. That's my best guess at this point."

Speaking of promises, weren't we "promised" OOTP6 by Feb. 28? Is that still on target? And I hope the HH/FPS converters are included.

I certainly don't remeber that. My preference is when it is ready.

And let's not forget that I was "promised" a free copy of OOTP6. I can't find the thread right not, but it's out there somewhere. Trust me.

Hopefully it comes with a complimentary TPB to OOTP6 converter for anyone affected.

No, mid-summer.

BTW, I support both programs and I wish both Markus and Shaun all the best.
