Strange roster "players" added to all teams

I've tried to do a search for this problem, but I couldn't really accurately define it for the search engine to find anything, so I was hoping to see if anyone else had the same issue.

All of a sudden, in my solo league, every team -- including my own -- had a bunch of new "players" (between 7 and 15 per team) on their rosters...except these players, all hitters, have 0 ratings except for 12 strikeout (which is then defined as poor) and names of a square symbol. I released those guys from my roster, but soon thereafter I experienced my first Illegal operation when starting a game and had to exit the game and start over.

I'm just concerned that my database might be on the verge of getting corrupted and I'm on my second season of playing each and every game.

The "square" symbols (in my case anyway) showing up in various displays has almost always been a pre-cursor to a corrupted database

In almost all cases, howevr, I could remember something out of the oridinary happening - a computer crash - or something similar. One of the easiest things to do wrong is to have the game open twice without knowing it. This will always almost cause serious problems.

The only thing I can say is backup, backup, backup.... I backup my leagues after every SIM or every 7 days so I have a place to go back to if something goes wrong.
