Angry Abnormal program termination

Okay, now whenever I start OOTP4, my league does not load (by default), and any operation I attempt to execute (load league, create new league, etc.), always results in a Visual C++ "Abnormal program termination", whereupon OOTP dies.
This is totally out of the blue, the game has been as solid as a rock previous to this ...

I've already used up my last 2 remaining license keys trying to install over the previous install, but to no avail. What is going on here ? How can I fix this ?

frustrated,

Hawk.

Have you deleted a league recently?

Do you have any other programs running while you play?

To get your liscences back contact Via Tech explain the situation and they are pretty good about restoring liscences.

Scott, I have not deleted a league recently. All I have been doing is playing my 2002 (currently just completed 2007 season) career replay using the Rolen rosters.

If I do manage to get an extra license from Viatech, can this problem be resolved ?

Have you seen this error message before ?

Thanks,

Hawk.

One thing to check is to make sure you don't have some residual copy of OOTP4 running already. Do a Ctrl+Alt+Delete and look for OOTP4, if the game is running then the new copy you tried to open would have issues accessing the league file since it would still be open.

I have seen that message before and these are the two causes of it that I know of.

The default (quick-start/last used) league file is missing.

The default (quick-start/last used) league file failed to completely save when the game was last closed (typically occurs do to a crash of the system as the game was saving).

If you are ready to give up on the league you can simply copy the .dat files from the create folder into the default league folder and the game should start up...

Hope this helps..

I too have the same problem. I tried as you said to copy the DAT files from the create folder into a default folder to no avail. I'm assuming re-downloading the program would work if there is nothing else I can do to fix this problem. It's been 5 days since I last played and I'm SO missin this game.

Reinstalling the game seems to always work in cases where the user has accidently deleted required file(s), but in many cases game crashes come from a corrupt league, and these can't be saved by a reinstall.

OOTP/STB should give you an error message with the problem mentioned, otherwise it can be very difficult figuring out what went wrong just from "the game crashed" in this support forum. One example is is the "injury.txt" file in the OOTP4/STB2003 root folder. If that is deleted I believe the game will just crash with no warning - it should pop up an error stating "Can't find injury.txt file" or something like that. Hopefully more in depth error checking will be included in future versions so even if there are a few glitches, we can figure out the problem almost immediately.

Scott,
Thanks very much for the help here ! Your advice worked perfectly, but I did end up losing my career replay league though ...
Oh well, the game works now - that is the main thing !

Hawk.

The message I get along with Visual C++ Abnormal Program Termination is Runtime Error. What additional info could I give to help you with figuring out what the problem could be. I hate having to ask this question but I'm not big with computers.

I just got this error last night after I downloaded the Rolen rosters. When I tried to open a league with those rosters I would get that error as it was saving the league settings. It would then kick me out of the game. If I go back in again and restore my game with the default rosters I have no problem though, I only have it trying to use the rolen roster patch after following his directions thoroughly.

Can you tell me what folders and .dat files are in the directory C:\Program Files\OOTP4\Rolen2002.lg ? (If you are running STB then substitute that folder for OOTP4) If you have all the folders you might want to try redownloading the file, if you are using AOL, you should do this using an external web browser (instead of the one built into the AOL program) as many people have reported download issues trying to download through the buitl in AOL browser.

Let me know if this helps you guys....

That was my thought, I may try downloading the league again to see what I get. I'm putting it right in the STB folder and the contents of the file looked exactly like the contents of my other saved game files. I only got the error message when I tried to start a game using the rolen files.

Are the file sizes of the .dat files similar to those in your other league folders? Are they similar to the size of the .dat files in the create folder?

I get this error message whenever I try to open an existing league or create a new league. When I go to open up the OOTP4 program it opens but once I click to get into the game from the screen with my license info, it is pretty much blank.

The day this first happened I got out of the game and restarted the computer. Once I got back in, my friend opened up one of the leagues and it opened however all of the names of the players were gone. He went to open up on of my leagues to see if the same had happened on mine and that is when the Runtime Error - Abnormal Program Termination began.

If the game starts up and works correctly after that then great go to town... if it doesn't report back exactly what you did each step and when the game crashed.

The only other thing I can think of, which may or may not be a problem and I will check tonight, is that I downloaded the file on one machine, burned it on a CD-R (thus making the files read-only) and then moved it to the other machine resulting in the error. Just a thought but if the files need to be written to and they are shown as read only that could be a problem. Am I out of my mind here or could that be an issue?

If the files are "read only" that is the problem, change that and you should be good to go.
