To Frame or Not to Frame

I've noticed most people here like their logos to fill out the entire 150x150 square. I like to put logos in a shape with the rest of the outside in transparent black. Usually that shape is a circle and most current major and minor league logos are in the shape of a circle. Other shapes that can work are home plate (like the Padres new logo) or a diamond (the Phillies are close). Other irregular shapes that are the shape of the logo itself can also sometimes work.

Anyway, I like to do this because the transparent effect of black in the game makes for an animated variety during game play. It doesn't look quite so good for the HTML reports where you actually see the black. So I usually have to compromise between how the logo that looks in the game when the black is transparent and in the HTML report when the black is visible.

Am I all alone in this view or do others feel the same way? Do you like a square logo or different shapes?

In my online leagues, I rarely notice the logo in the game. I try to make sure it will look good on the league site since that is where most people will be viewing it. In solo play howver, I do most of my logos as "floating" by using a black background.

I prefer frames with colors that bring out the main colors of the logos.

Framing it with 3 colors is fine with me.

Many times a logos just looks "empty" without framing and without trimming the letters and mascot image...preferably 2-3 colors.

I like real good color contrast, too. Sometimes designers put together colors that blend rather than contrast and the logo is not easy to read. For instance, blue on a black background. It would be fine if white trim were used to separate the blue and black.

Cuss16:

I miss seeing your logo designs. They were always so creative.

Are you doing them anymore?

Just two cents from someone who "straddles the border". I perceive true logos to be made up of the basic pictures and lettering. A really good logo design would stand on its own without a standard square background.
That being said, I like to think of the OOTP "logos" as stickers, patches, banners, badges, emblems, etc. The 150x150 canvas allows use of a background color that sets the main design off - sort of like the main color of a team jacket or a pennant. Many real-world applications of great sports logos are depicted against a background.

Sometimes I like to use the black to "float" the logo. In some instances, this gives better definition to fonts and pictures when applied in OOTP.

I keep my website background black to accomodate all styles.
