How much is the WS worth too you?
Im in a situation, I have a team that is loaded and has only 2 teams of compeition (playoffs only) that can really pose a threat. I have the oppurtunity to make a trade that would send me an awesome IF at the 1 position I could actually use, but I would have to give 3 of my top 10 specs and 2 of my top 5....
The player is young though...so its more like just 2 of my top 5. Money is not an issue in the deal really..... Im not asking if I should do it, but how much do you value winning a title. Do you think selling your future for that 1 title is worth it? Im not saying pull a '97 Marlins but trading top specs to get over the top, even if you give up more hten you probabally should but will |

I'm not sure what the exact situation you are in right now, or how good your prospects are, but playoffs are too much about luck. The key is to get into it and wish for the best. Getting some help for the final push into the playoffs might be a good idea, but it's probably not worth it sacrificing the future if the team already can secure a playoff spot.

of course it's worth it, the whole point is to win, to me. Doesn't matter what the future holds if you can win now. That's just an opinion.

Could you give the ratings and talent of the players involved, also the stats of the guy who would lose his starting spot if you made the trade? But right now, I am leaning toward Skipaway.

I would suggest targeting another ace quality pitcher if your really looking for the series. While going with an abundance of offense can usually get you in the playoffs and then can hope for the crapshoot to fall your way, the teams with the best pitching usually seem to go the deepest in the playoffs (there are always exceptions).
But as Skipaway said, if your in, your in and I wouldn't go too wild thinking one position player is going to make the differance in the end. Id take a close look at the other probable playoff teams and see if there is a general weakness among them and then get players to exploit those weaknesses, lots of righty pitchers who struggle vs lefty bats, lots of lefty pitchers who struggle vs. righty bats, lefthanded batter dominated lineups, righthanded batter dominated lineups are some, then try to set up your team to exploit them. If you don't see a glaring weakness among them you can make a move to exploit, i'd concentrate on improving my top 4 starting pitchers. |

I agree that winning is important, but the playoffs really are all about luck. This has been proven time and time again. I have won because of luck and lost because of luck as have most GMs who get to the playoffs in online leagues.
I try to keep the strength of my organization in mind at all times. |

One team to keep in mind: The Buffalo Bills. Carpe Diem.

If your really intresed, I have 3 solid "aces" already (all 8+ ERA)... the upgrade would be at second base and its more of a huge defensive upgrade (from E to D) but also a small offensive one...
The specs are pretty good (but I think 1 is a bust, 24 yr CL with only 2 in ERA)

Well, if you have the starting pitching your in good shape, although an E to a D doesn't seem like much of a defensive upgrade, espcially if its only a "small" offensive upgrade.
How's your bullpen? |

My philosophy is the same philosophy as Billy Beane's: Build a team to make it the playoffs as often as possible, but once there, it's more about luck than anything else. The best bet is to build the organization that remains solid for a number of seasons rather than risking everything for one season. If you can make it four, five, six seasons into the playoffs, then I'd say your chances of coming out with a championship in one of them is pretty good.
