more FA offer madness

In my solo league I go to see what my 33 year old backup 1B wants in the way of an extension...he tells me $550,000 for 3 years. I offer him exactly that and he says it's not enough money. I then offer him $550,050 for 3 years and he says it's not enough money. So as not to get screwed on the "three and out free agent offer" thing, I offer him $600,000 for 3 years only to be told that I've lost mchance and he wants to go play elsewhere next year!

Not that this guy is some huge stud I just lost, but having a decent backup is almost as important when building a winning team. I gave this guy EXACTLY WHAT HE ASKED FOR and more (twice), only to have him balk.

What's the deal with that?

is it me or when you offer a little less than you should, if he says no, you're forced to offer him more than he asked first?

like, say my top player ask for 10 000 000$ for 5 years,
i offer him 9 750 000$ for 5 years, he says no,
there is no chance in hell if i offer him 10 000 000$ for 5 years that he'll say yes....

is that my usual badluck or how its working?

Hey, plenty of times I've seen a guy ask for $2M for 4 years and then take my offer of $1.5 for 2 years or something or other. Point is, there has to be some room for movement. Some guys will take less than they're asking for. Others more. Perhaps the real beef is with the wording of the request.

Maybe people wouldn't be so upset if it said, "John Smith's agent thinks that $550,000 for 2 years might be a reasonable offer".

i have made many posts on the subject and i am convinced that the whole philosophy of the process is wrong. a player should listen to every offer that you make up until the end of the season. what player in their right mind would tell you that he wants to stay with your team and negotiate "but you have only 2-3 offers to get it right and no hints"

i think the worry is that the owner will keep too many players but that can be totally controlled by simply having players opt to try the fa market.

the problem that i have is that when a player says he will negotiate then he should negotiate to the end. another idea that i have seen expressed is for the player or agent to give you an idea of where you are with an offer.if you offer 3 contracts and each time the player says "you are a long ways away" then i can see a player walking away. but if the answer is "we are getting close" then the player should hang in there and negotiate up until the end of the season

maybe a player should say that he's cutting off negotiations for a month or two, or maybe he should tell you to "see him once the season's over" something like that may be more realistic if you're close to an offer instead of him just taking off no matter what

If a player calls off negotiations early in the season, often he will negotiate again later in the season.

maybe we should add such luxuries as use of a corporate jet, free use of the owners box, and roadie whores for players use. That would make them sign, and therefore make it much more realistic.

I had a similar problem...unfortunately it was with a star player. I made an offer and he asked for more years, so I added an extra year to the offer and he responded that I had my chance. Very frustrating.

Yes, and that would be like adding a couple million dollars to the contract to cover it all.
