AI disaster
I am usually able to overlook the AI and its ignorance, but after watching one of my owners get screwed in a playoff game tonight I can't bite my tounge. Absolutely unbelievable.
Heres the two situations: Pitcher is injured facing the last batter of bottom of 4 at which point the game brings in a RP for some reason who is due up 2nd in the coming inning. He is then pinch hit for in the top of 5th, never throwing a pitch and wasting a valuable arm in what would be an extra inning game. #2- The teams closer who was completely rested pitches in the bottom of 8th up 4-3. He retires the side on 6 pitches. He then bats in the top of the inning only to be replaced by the teams worst relief pitcher going into the bottom of ninth in a 4-3 game in game 2 of the LCS. He promptly allows the tieing run to send the game to extra innings where he allows a walk-off grandslam in the bottom of 10. I can see no rationalization for either of these situations, (I bet Henry can't even attempt to). Simply amazing how the game just throws away a 7 AR releiver in the 5th and then yanks the teams 10 AR closer going into the bottom of the ninth in a 4-3 game. Lesson: Don't check your game logs, it will make ya sick. |

Yep, was a killer for me. Thought I had it in the bag until the scrub came in for the 9th. Only reason he was on the roster was because of the rash of last week injuries, but that's another thread.

Well, it looks like the starter - Ahumada, right? - was removed because he was injured. So that makes sense.
I still don't get why Palacios was pulled, unless he was set up with a really quick hook, or had a wicked low pitch count. I suspect it has something to do with him being a "closer", so the AI treats him the way a typical big-league manager would and only uses him for an inning, regardless of the situation. |

Although it looks like Nick Johnson (the pitch hitter) did get you a hit and run
. Still makes no sense why the game would have done that. If the inning was over it should have thought PH instead of RP.As for the closer, 6 pitches and a C rating in relieving stamina. Maybe the computer was thinking R/L splits or something? Doesn't make sense with only 6 pitches thrown. Maybe his at-bat was REALLY REALLY long, like he fouled off pitch after pitch and was exhausted!

Well, I have no idea why that happened, but I prevented the 2nd issue to happen anymore in 5.13.
The first problem was a pretty easy fix, though.

If you enable the DH, it takes a lot of the poor substitution mannerisms (such as these) out of play. I would think having the pitcher hit adds nothing of substance to an online league.

I couldn't agree more. I'm in my 5th season of an on-line laegue and we switched to the DH after year 1. I am still perplexed by some of the moves the AI makes regarding the bullpen, but I'm trying to deal with it by using pitch counts and the individual hook settings. Steve |

We do lots of live sims in the MBBA and I would frequently do a "Highlighted" game and give inning by inning details to the chat room. The things we saw the AI do in our non-DH league were pretty horrifying. My personal favorite is when the game lets the pitcher hit in a crucial late game situation with 2 outs and guys on and your team down. The pitcher makes an out, ends the inning and then is immediately relieved by a new pitcher to start the next inning. That should never happen. If AI lets him hit, then it should let him pitch too. If it doesn't want him pitching next inning then he should be PH'ed for.

I believe the FOBL's personal favorite AI brain fart is the infamous "men on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs, tie game, bottom of the ninth... DOUBLE STEAL!"

I can make up a real-world excuse for any AI glitch. Not that it's not still a glitch.

Double stealing to put the winning run in scoring position along with the tying run is playing to win. I like it when the CPU doesn't play lawyer ball.

The winning run is already in scoring position.

Oh yeah. I guess it helps to read sometimes. It was 7:48 am. At that hour of the morning by brain is on life support functions only.
