The Yankees payroll will first eclipse 200 million in...?
When will the Yanks hit 200? It's obvious luxury tax doesn't stop them...

There are far more hopeless teams in both soccer or all NCAA sports than MLB. So what? |

I said 2007 or beyond. Though they're headed that way, I think it will take them some time.

They were at something like 180 prior to the deadline... anyone know what it is now? I assume it's pretty similar.

slighty above 180.
The Mondesi deal cut some payroll that was then filled in by Boone. The trades the Yanks made at the deadline didn't really affect their payroll too much. As for 200 million in payroll? If it happens, it's not next year. It could happen in 2005, though. |

It'll happen next year, when Jeter gets injured and George goes after Alex Rodriguez. You can buy that.

Sell. The Yankees will reach $200 mil in 2005... not 2004, as they have nobody to sign!

I would guess 2007 or beyond. I think they will hold off on letting it go to $200 million as that will set a new precedent and get people really upset and talking about it even more than if the payroll stays around "only" $180 million. Something about that magic 200 mark.

If the Rangers can slip Juando through waivers and trade him to NYY, they may just be able to make it this year!

That's the true beauty of having dominant teams. Hardcore fans would support the team no matter what, but you need teams like that and stars like Beckham or Jordan to sqeeze money out of those who don't really understand the sport! You think Japanese school girls would care about a "highly competitive, everybody got a chance to win" spanish soccer league? See how many non-baseball fans are Yankees fans? non-basketball fans that were the Bulls fans? |

Apparently in baseball the two sure ways to earn money are: 1. Try hard to field a good team and attract more fans, especially fair-weather fans. 2. Try hard to save cost and field a stupid lousy team that got no chance to win. You'll get your pool of shared money and whatever you can squeeze from "loyal" and "hardcore" suckers. See how "loyal" fans are hurting baseballby awarding bad owners?

Maybe there will be a boatload of Cuban players washing up the shores tomorrow. And the Yankees would spend 45 millions just to sign ten more Andy Morales.

I dont think they will. If they did, it would cause a lot of problems for them, IMO. As crazy as it sounds, I think the Yankees will get smart and stay below that 200 mil level
