5 years too short but 6 is too long

I have an excellent young talent I am trying to resign. Whenever I put in a offer with a 5 year timespan it says he "wants more years" but when I make him an offer for 6 years it says he "doesn't want to be tied up that long". I've tried periodically during the season to get him to sign and it's the same thing each time. I have also offerred him more money than he is worth just to see if he would overlook the contract length issue but to no avail.

I have a feeling I'm just gonna have to either trade him or test my luck signing him during free agency but I was curious if anyone else has had this occur? If so, did it clear up by the end of the season? I don't want to trade him but I hate to lose his trade value just so I can have him play a couple more months on my team.

sometimes when a player tells you he wants more years, what he really wants is more money. offer him a 5 year deal for more cash and see what he says.

careful though, one or two more unacceptable offers and he may decide that he will be playing elsewhere next season.

yeah, but don't offer a 34 year old a $19,000,000 deal for 5 years.

did that with Chipper Jones once. Got 3 1/2 good years but the last 1 1/2? Ouch...most expensive pinch hitter in the history of MLB. :

personal rule of thumb for me: avoid signing ANYONE beyond the age 35. =)

Didn't have that one. But i did have a guy tell me how much he wanted. And i offered him exactly that. And he said "I want more money!"

Go figure...
