PWBL 1949 World Series

The PWBL World Series matchup has been set for 1949 and starts now!

The AL representative will be the mighty Yankees from New York who reached the Series on the strength of the best pitching staff in baseball, allowing just 601 runs. Outlasting the Red Sox on the final day of the regular season, the Bombers finished with a Major League best 95-59 mark. The offense was not nearly as good as the pitching, despite finishing second in baseball with 165 home runs. Their 769 runs scored placed them seventh in baseball. Yankees offense is led by leftfielder Charlie Keller and his .926 OPS, 32 HR, and 122 walks. The pitching staff is led by the unparalled Hal Newhouser who put up the sterling line of 26-5, 2.27 ERA, and 182 K's.

For the third consecutive season, the St. Louis Cardinals will be the senior circuit's entrant. Although their final mark of 92-62 was not the best in baseball, they were quite arguably the best team in baseball, ranking third in runs scored with 833 and second in runs allowed with 629. The Cards offense was led by future Hall of Famer Stan Musial. Donora, Pennsylvania's favorite son hit .327 with 44 doubles, 7 triples, 24 home runs, and 126 RBI's and will most likely cruise to his first PWBL NL MVP award. The pitching staff was led once again by 1948 NL Cy Young winner Howie Pollett who actually had a better season in '49 going 21-7 with a 2.61 ERA and 18 complete games.

With the matchup set and the team's introduced, let's play the games!

1949 PWBL World Series Game One

St. Louis Cardinals

at

New York Yankees

Cardinals lead the Series 1-0

from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York.

Starting for the Cardinals-
Fred Martin (17-10, 3.44)

Starting for the Yankees-
Hal Newhouser (26-5, 2.27)

First inning -

Cardinals draw first blood off ace starter Newhouser, as Erv Dusak leads the game off with a double and Stan Musial follows two batters later with a double of his own.

Fred Martin doesn't even allow a baserunner on just six pitches.

Cardinals lead 1-0

Second inning -

Newhouser settles down and holds the Cards scoreless. However, Martin allows only a walk and the Yankees fail to score.

Cardinals lead 1-0

Third inning -

Martin keeps his very early no-hitter going and both teams fail to score.

Cardinals lead 1-0

Fourth inning -

After four innings, Fred Martin continues to pitch a no-no.

Cardinals lead 1-0

Fifth inning -

SS Cecil Travis breaks up Martin's no-hit bid with a single and Yogi follows with an RBI double. He is later driven home by Yankee starter Hal Newhouser.

Yankees with their first lead of the series 2-1

Sixth inning -

Neither team scores and the Yankees continue to lead 2-1

Seventh inning -

Neither team scores and the Yankees continue to lead 2-1

Eighth inning -

Neither team scores and the Yankees continue to lead 2-1

Ninth inning -

Cardinals starter Fred Martin gets a base hit. Newhouser retires the next two batters leaving the Cadinals on their final out, but SS Ralph LaPointe drives Martin home with a game tying base hit.

Yankees get shut down by Martin in the bottom half of the inning and we go to extra innings.

Tenth inning -

Yankee reliever Joe Page holds the Cardinals scoreless (despite some close calls) to move the game to the bottom of the tenth.

The Cardinals strangely leave Martin in to pitch the tenth. This proves to be a poor move as Cecil Travis doubles and sees pinch runner Phil Rizzuto driven home by Yankee pinch hitter Billy Johnson.

Final Score

Yankees 3 - Cardinals 2

Winning pitcher - Joe Page (1.1 IP, 0 ER)
Losing pitcher - Fred Martin (9.1 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K)

Player of the Game -
Hal Newhouser (8.2 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K)

Series tied at a game a piece. Games 3 and 4 from Sportsman's Park on Monday night!

First game sucked, and Stengel definately is rethinking his first game starting pitcher choice, but wanted to make sure Newhouser was at full strength. 2nd game was a tight one, we'll see how the rest plays out. Where the heck are those Yankee power hitters? Hmmmm....

Two reasons the Yankees will win the World Series.

1. The PWBL has yet to produce a two time champion which a Cardinal victory would achieve.

2. A Yankees victory would balance WS wins at 2 apiece between the junior and senior circuits.

Two reasons the Cardinals will win.

1. They have the best talent in baseball.

2. In the event of a game seven, Hal Newhouser will not be available for the Yankees. Ouch!

Brazle will be an elite starter if Eddie Dyer leaves him in the rotation next year. Helluva closer but more valuable going every 4 days. Yankees are in deep poop if they lose the next game.

Yankee bats continue to show they just aren't that good against the better pitchers in the league. What a joke...

Let's hope that isn't entirely true as Howie Pollet is due up in game 4 for the Cards.

I'm not maintaining a lot of faith the way they've played so far. You can't rest your entire team on 1 pitcher(Newhouser). If they ain't gonna contribute to the cause, they don't deserve to win anyway. Signed Disgruntled Owner(Do you think this will spark them?)

Stengel should be fired, though he won't be for many years, for sitting Newhouser for game one. Cards have an advantage with their stud Pollet scheduled for three starts in the WS and not having to face off with Newhouser either while Hal is limited to two appearances. Yikes!

True enough, the Yankees can overcome this with some fine play. We shall see very shortly if they can get back in it.

Madre de Dios, the Yankees started Ed Bahr in game 4!!!!! And it worked. Wow, that took some cojones. Obviously, they are sticking with a 4 man all the way through the Series and none of their big guns, Mort Cooper included, will be called upon to make three starts.

Very strange series thus far. Every indicator points to the Cardinals having won already or being up 3-1. Instead, it is tied and the Yankees can still trot out Hal Newhouser and Mort Cooper (who just has to pitch better) for another game each.

Cooper didn't match up so well last time with Pollet, thought we'd try something different. Thanks to the bats finally coming alive, it worked at least for the moment...

The Cardinals recent history in a nutshell. They've finished far below expected wins each of the past two seasons. They've won the only blowout in this series and lost 2/3 close affairs.
