Pre-1900 Baseball Books

Can anyone recommend any books about pre-1900 baseball?

P.S. Looking over the historical baseball books on Amazon, I realized that there are way too many books about the damn Yankees!

One of the very best baseball books I have ever read was called "Where They Ain't". It's a history of the old Baltimore Orioles dynasty in the 1890's. An amazing book that gives you great incite into the business aspects of the sport back then. You'll be amazed out how many things are similar between then and now.

I'd like to read a baseball book written before 1900.

Hey spleen, I don't really like LL, but I admit that he's a fairly entertaining person for some and that he has a somewhat big "following", but is smartest really the word you were looking for?

I'd be interested in one of these, too.

Anyone know of any?

Do you not think he is intelligent? I think he is. I've never encountered anyone who comes to close to knowing what he does about baseball trivia. Also, have you ever read any of the articles and stories he has written for online leagues? He is one of the better writers I've read in OOTPLand.

Yes, I think he is intelligent, but not as much as many other people on this board, in my opinion. It's not what strikes me about this person.

Baseball trivia knowledge and writing abilities are not directly proportinal to a person's intelligence.

The best thing to do if you want to find baseball books published in the 19th century that are available for sale:

Go to Borders (I think B&N should have the same service, but having worked for both of them, I can say that Borders will probably get you further). Find yourself a knowledgeable worker there. Not a summer help person or some 16-year-old new hire, but someone who really knows how to find stuff. Ideally, you want to talk to someone who would be responsible for special orders.

Ask them what books are in print with baseball as a keyword that were published before 1900. The BIP database can call this info up pretty easily, but you have to know how to use it. I believe the phrase to enter in the search field is: kw="baseball" and py<1900.
